UNS – The Bengawan Unmanned Vehicle (UV) Team Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta successfully won award in the Federation of International Robot Sport Association (FIRA) Roboworld Cup and Summit 2023 in Germany. In this event, they won first place in the Emergency Service category and received the Object Grasping award in the Emergency Service Technical Challenge category.
During the Appreciation Day event held at the R. Ng. Ranggawarsita PUI Javanology UNS, on Monday (31/7/2023), the Bengawan UV UNS team showcased the creations used in the competition. The Bengawan UV UNS team sent four student delegates to compete in Germany. They were Diasdamara Fakhri Nugroho, Rakhli Dian Pramudya, Ibnu Naufal, and M. Kholilul Hilmy B.
To uns.ac.id, Diasdamara Fakhri Nugroho, the team coordinator for the FIRA Roboworld Cup and Summit 2023, explained that the competition involved the use of drones or unmanned aircraft. In the Emergency Service category, they were challenged to accomplish missions indoors using the drones they had built. The missions included road tracking for first aid purposes, object searching, and spatial imaging.
The process of creating the drones brought by the Bengawan UV UNS Team took 6 to 8 months. It started at the end of 2022, during which they prepared the program requirements, framework, electronics, and other necessary components. In the competition held from 17 to 21 July 2023, the Bengawan UV UNS team received two awards.
“Alhamdulillah, we won first place in the emergency service category. We also manage to complete the technical award for object grasping,” Dias explained.
Prof. Dr. Eng. Syamsul Hadi, S.T., M.T., as the supervisor of Bengawan UV UNS, explained that the student’s participation in a competition is a form of harmony with their hobbies. Moreover, the students can develop their creations into a thesis or final project. The university also supports the students’ activities that bring UNS to the international stage. UNS provides funding support for the production process, accommodation, and awards for the Bengawan UV team in this event.
“This is what we encourage them to do, to combine their hobbies with their knowledge so that their activities can be synergized. For example, if their hobby is related to ships, their final project would be related to that area,” Prof. Syamsul Hadi said.
Prof. Venty Suryanti, S.Sc., M.Phil., Ph.D., as the Director of the Directorate of Innovation and Downstreaming UNS, expressed her gratitude for the achievement given to UNS. This achievement is related to the efforts to fulfill the Key Performance Indicators (IKU), especially KPI 2. This indicator is related to students’ achievements in winning competitions at the national level.
