The webinar on Saturday (19/2/2022) invited three speakers, David Virya Chen, Ph.D., a specially appointed researcher in Immunology Frontier Research Center, Osaka University; Asst. Prof. Miftakhul Huda, Assistant Professor di Nagoya University; and Murni Ramli, M.Si., Ed.D.; Faculty Member of Biology Education UNS. The opening remark was delivered by Prof. Yusli Wardianto, the Educational and Cultural Attache of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) Tokyo, and Prof. Sajidan, the Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs UNS.

In his opening remark, Chairman of PSJ UNS, Dr. Eng. Kusumaningdyah Nurul Handayani hoped that the webinar could benefit all participants. “We hoped that the partnership agenda prepared with PPI Japan could be implemented in the future,” Dr. Eng. Kusumaningdyah stated.

Prof. Sajidan also appreciated the collaboration and hoped that students in Japan could contribute to the nation’s development, although they are far away from Indonesia. “I am happy with the spirits of PPI Japan hopefully, after you graduate, you can come back to build Indonesia to be in the same level as Japan,” Prof. Sajidan stated. Prof. Yusli Wardianto supported Prof. Sajidan and stated that although they are abroad, it is expected that they will contribute to the nation. “I hoped we could take a synthesis from the speakers,” he stated.

The first speaker, David Virya Chen, Ph.D., discussed Covid-19 and the role of the vaccine. He compared the immune system and kitchen in the sense that the immune system is like kitchen components that are only included when we open their containers. He also emphasized the importance of vaccine distribution before the booster program. The second speaker, Asst. Prof. Miftakhul Huda shared material on an education program in Japan during the pandemic situation. He stated that not all schools in Japan were ready when the government applied Covid-19 emergency. The condition led to non-intensive materials provided by teachers, with some of them only providing their students with pdf or video materials. “Only around 9% uses two-way media like Zoom,” he stated.

The last material from Murni Ramli, M.Si., Ed.D., discussed the readiness and importance of face-to-face learning amid the pandemic in Indonesia. She stated that during the pandemic, the learning activities remain under control under curriculum, actors, or facilitators in the teaching and learning process. The only difference was that the teacher’s portion was reduced, and the parents and online portion increased. “Teachers use diverse online learning platforms from group chat with parents to a complex learning management system,” she explained. She added that according to the Kemdikbudristek survey, only 46% of Indonesian teachers are ready with information technology skills, resulting in technology cluelessness. The Omicron cases spike in Indonesia attracted public attention immediately since the cases increased after 110,620,807 Indonesian citizens received their 2nd dose of Covid-19 vaccination. Additionally, public concerns about Omicron began to emerge because news circulated that the Covid-19 vaccines, which are currently available, were not effective against Omicron. So, is it true?

A Clinical Pathology Specialist in Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Hospital, Surakarta, dr. Tonang Dwi Ardyanto, Sp.PK(K), Ph.D., FISQua ., states that the current Covid-19 vaccine only focuses on severe symptoms and death. If we wish to get a Covid-19 vaccine that can prevent infection in the upper respiratory tract, of course, it will take longer. “In countries facing Omicron, for example, the UK, vaccination coverage is already high. When Omicron spread, numerically, it was greater than the number of vaccinated groups. However, if it is proportional or in percentage, it (the Omicron case) is more than the group that has not been vaccinated,” explained dr. Tonang, Monday (12/27/2021).

Considering the rapid increase in Omicron cases in the UK, he explained that the risk of a Covid-19 vaccinated person being hospitalized when infected with Omicron is only 31-45 percent. Meanwhile, for those who have not received their Covid-19 vaccine shots, the risk of undergoing hospitalization in an isolation room when infected with Omicron increases to 50-70 percent.

dr. Tonang added that the Omicron hospitalization percentage for a vaccinated person was lower compared to the Delta variant, which spread in the middle of this year. “Meanwhile, for those recovering from Covid-19 infection but yet to get vaccinated, the risk is 11 percent compared to the Delta variant. This means that it is 4-7 times higher than the vaccinated group against Covid-19,” added dr. Tonang.

If you look at the Covid-19 vaccination coverage in Indonesia, the percentage of complete vaccine injections had reached 40.65 percent. Around 17 percent of the people have just received the first dosage, while around 42.3 percent have not received any dosage of Covid-19 vaccine. Based on this data, dr. Tonang is worried that the un-vaccinated groups against Covid-19 will be more prone to contracting Omicron.

“One point to remember is that the person who gets infected faster is the one with the laxest health protocol, those who do not wear a mask and do not wash their hands regularly. For those who have antibodies, the virus will clear faster. However, those who have yet to develop the antibodies against Covid-19 will need 14 days for the virus to disappear after the initial infection,” said dr. Tonang.

Do we need to use a booster?

Because the currently available Covid-19 vaccines are still not able to prevent people from the new SARS-CoV-2 variant, there has been discoursed for a booster shot(s). On a side note, the booster is different from the third dose, which many people have misinterpreted. Booster is an additional vaccine to ensure that the two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine that have been injected have formed immunity. Meanwhile, the third dose is a vaccine that must be injected and is the central part of the Covid-19 vaccine, like the first and second doses.

Furthermore, dr. Tonang said that the necessity of injecting a booster needs further investigation, considering that the report is still based on laboratory research. “We called it in vitro. Nothing wrong; however, a careful interpretation in the field is needed. The reports (on booster shots) are from countries with 70-80 percent vaccination rate, but in Indonesia, it is only around 40 percent,” added dr. Tonang.

He said, even though someone is at risk of contracting Omicron, it does not mean the effectiveness of the Covid-19 vaccine is lost. dr. Tonang dismissed this assumption and emphasized that the effectiveness of the Covid-19 vaccine was only decreasing. Instead of focusing on discussing the need for boosters, dr. Tonang asked the government to immediately intensify the injection of the second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. “This is more important, more meaningful, and has a stronger communal effect against whatever Covid-19 variants that still exist and may exist,” he added.

When can a booster be given?

dr. Tonang explained that the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) agreed that booster injections could be carried out when 50 percent of the population had been vaccinated against Covid-19. “Using an assumption that the proportion of survivors who have not been vaccinated is around 20 percent, most of the survivors have been vaccinated, then with 50 percent vaccination rate along with the 20 percent vaccinated survivor, vaccination rate can reach around 70 percent,” said dr. Tonang.

After reaching this percentage, he said the Ministry of Health could consider delivering a booster, given that the primary Covid-19 vaccination must still be carried out and boosters are addressed for high-risk groups.

“With the average speed of administering vaccines in the last seven days, we can reach 50 percent vaccination rate in about 30-50 days,” he concluded. Humas UNS

The students in Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) Grant of Geography Education team made Simo Village, Simo Subdistrict, Boyolali District as a Disaster Reliant Village. In the program held in three months from September to November 2021, the team helped in mapping the spread of Covid-19 in the village. Simo village was selected because it was the first village affected by the second wave of Covid-19 in the Boyolali District between July and August 2021. Since then, the local government has made numerous efforts, including vaccination in collaboration with TNI/Polri, to return their region into the green zone and control the Covid-19 infection level.

Determined not to let the same thing reoccur in the village, Simo Village continuously improving its system with the help from MBKM Grant Team UNS. Various activities were programmed by the 10-members team, including mapping of Covid-19 spread in the previous wave. The mapping includes location plotting with borders of hamlets, public facilities, and demographic data. The team created an administrative map for Simo Village, population density map, Covid-19 spread map, Covid-19 risk map, Covid-19 threat map, Covid-19 capacity map, and Covid-19 vulnerability map, as references for the village government in preventing and handling the current pandemic.

Aida Nur Azqiya, the team coordinator, thanked Simo Village for the collaboration and hoped that the program could continue in the future. The team supervised by Dr. Rita Noviani, S.Si., M.Sc., and Dr. Pipit Wijayanti, S.Si., M.Sc., also established Covid-19 volunteer group with Karang Taruna Desa Simo members through socialization on the mitigation of Covid-19 and counseling on Covid-19 Disaster Resistant Village by inviting the Regional Disaster Mitigation Board of Boyolali District.

The team also conducts training Serambi Tani for the local people to improve people’s economic resilience in facing natural and non-natural disasters. The program that is aimed at housewives and members of Simo Village PKK provides training for polybag planting methods for various plants such as eggplant, chili, and tomato that match Simo Village topography. The participants also learned to make liquid organic fertilizers (POC) from household wastes such as vegetables and fruits wastes, rice water, and microbial liquid. These materials were fermented to produce POC.

Simo Village Chief, Mujiono, S.Sos., shared his delight in the program and hoped that the program could run smoothly till the end. “As Simo Village Chief, I thanked all students for dedicating (your program) to our village. Hopefully, this program could benefit us,” Mujiono stated. Humas UNS

The government of Indonesia took a quick response toward the issue by prohibiting foreign nationals (WNA) who visited South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Mozambique, Eswatini, Malawi, Angola, Zambia, and Hongkong in the last 14 days from entering Indonesia. Indonesian people who have a history of visiting the mentioned countries and coming back to Indonesia will undergo 14 days starting from Monday (29/11/2021) 00.01 Jakarta Time.

The spread of the Omicron variant also grasps the attention of Covid-19 Taskforce spokesperson and the Clinal Pathology Specialist Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta Hospital, Tonang Dwi Ardyanto dr. SpPK, Ph.D.

Although until Tuesday (30/11/2021), the Indonesian government has not confirmed the Omicron variant in Indonesia, it does not mean that the community could be ignorant and disregard the health protocols. With the increase in the reporting over Omicron spread, the community needs to be more careful and apply strict health protocols to prevent the case of Delta variant on July-August in the next Christmas and New Year holidays.

“These days, several countries have reported, including Australia. Those reporting are succeeded in detecting (the new variant). (Countries) that have not reported is not mean that they are free from the new variant. Maybe because they have not yet been successful in detecting it (the new variant),” dr. Tonang said to uns.ac.id on Tuesday (30/11/2021).

Regarding the severity of the new variant, dr. Tonang explained that the information continues to develop according to the spread of this new variant. He asked the community not to be too worried over the severity of the new variant but instead be aware of the issues. He also hoped that the emergency units in hospitals could be more ready in case the infection rate peaked due to the Omicron variant. He does not want Covid-19 patients to get poor service like in the July-August case.

“The malignancy greatly depends on the local condition. The death proportion (CFR) of the Delta variant, for example, is actually low. Although the cases were extreme in several countries, the death percentage was low,” he explained.

dr. Tonang added that Covid-19 handling is focused on the level of spread; therefore, the number of infections could be monitored, infection cases do not soar, health care facilities have the capability to provide services until the infection rate decreases. “What we need to consider is the infection rate. If the cases are soaring, the hospital collapses, beds are not available, (patients) queued in the emergency units, or even forced to stay at home that increases the risk, increases the death rate. It means that we need to be aware of,” dr. Tonang added.

The Wave of Covid-19 Spread

During the 1.5 years of the Covid-19 pandemic globally, Indonesia has experienced two waves that caused a spike in infection rate and death rate. dr. Tonang explained that there are two possible conditions when the wave of Covid-19 occurs. The first condition, the managed ones, when the case is high, but those confirmed with Covid-19 are isolated, and patients could access health care.

“Second (condition), from the beginning of the wave, the spread is uncontrollable, infection rate increases, cases increasing, and, I’m very sorry to say, many died, then after a lot of people got infected, the cases decreasing because the virus couldn’t find a new place to multiply,” dr. Tonang said.

Thus, dr. Tonang asked the government to ensure the community discipline in implementing the health protocols, help in separating the sources of infection through isolation, treat people showing Covid-19 symptoms, and vaccinate people. These efforts also need support by community behavior in wearing a mask, washing hands, and limiting interaction between Indonesia and other countries.

“The two are the government responsibilities because it is impossible for the people to perform it. (The community) could only support. Let us monitor and continue reminding the government if needed so that the government performs their responsibilities,” dr. Tonang stated. Humas UNS

Through the Covid-19 Week program, the students in A6 FK KKN Group held a series of an event between the vaccination program in FK UNS. Their program includes the invitation to wear double masks, distribution of leaflets on post-vaccination follow-up issues (KIPI), and distribution of medical masks for vaccination participants.

“The online events are a distribution of KIPI posters, bingo games, and online talkshow through Instagram Live, and education video on the use of double masks shared through Instagram account and live-streamed from the Observation Room in FK UNS vaccination site,” Brenda Angelique, A6 KKN Team leader explained.

The covid-19 week is a means for students to directly interact with the community and provide information and education. Brenda added that she hoped their idea for a week to fight Covid-19 could increase the community’s spirits to continue fighting the new virus. “This program is not just to share information, but also inviting surrounding community as pioneers and promotors of the use of double masks,” she added.

Brenda also hoped that the Covid-19 week that was held on 7-14 August 2021 would increase the number of people who care and protect their surrounding community. “Hopefully, also reduce the spread of Covid-19 at the community level. Let’s obey the health protocols together to stop Covid-19 spread in Indonesia,” she concluded. Humas UNS

The short talkshow had SKIPI DONAT: Talk Show in KIPI about Diving Through Vaccine Side Effects Hoax vs. Fact in Social Media as a theme. Under the supervision of Heni Hastuti, dr., MPH, the team targeted to reach 80 Covid-19 vaccination participants in the post-vaccination observation room (KIPI) FK UNS on Wednesday (11/8/2021).

“This talkshow discussed the myths and facts of the Covid-19 vaccine that spread in the community. For example, the myth that Covid -19 vaccine contains a microchip, the myth that Covid -19 vaccine caused Covid -19, the facts that nausea, fever, and muscle ache can be felt after Covid -19 vaccination, and many other myths and facts on Covid -19 vaccine,” the Group B4 Team Leader, Muhammad Rasyid Ridho, explained.

The talkshow was Group B4 community services for the society and Covid-19 FK UNS vaccination participants to correct the hoaxes in the community.

“This program also has pre-test and post-test to assess participants’ comprehension,” Safira Hasna Rosyida, Group B4 member, stated.

SKIPI DONAT Program also has other activities on social media, including quizzes and challenges in the @vaksinasifkuns Instagram account.

“With SKIPI DONAT, we hope that vaccination participants could be educated and will provide correct information for the community so that no community member feel afraid and hesitated to get Covid-19 vaccine,” Rasyid added. Humas UNS

Between the monitoring and evaluation held by LPPM UNS on Thursday (21/10/2021), Ubaidillah stated that the high Covid-19 infection level in Indonesia caused chaos because many patients were experiencing difficulty breathing and struggling to find breathing apparatus. This condition inspired Ubaidillah and his team to create a non-invasive breathing apparatus. “We also see an opportunity because of the minimum use of non-invasive breathing apparatus in the form of CPAP helmet, while CPAP helmet has been found to significantly reduce virus aerosolization, which is beneficial in reducing the transmission of Covid-19,” Ubaidillah explained.

With assistance from Rizqi Husain Alfathan, Bioma Cakrawala, Muhammad Dzaky Musyaffa, Rani Dwilarasati, and Azzahra Fadhlila Aulia Nisa, Ubaidillah added an oxygen sensor and oxygen saturation sensor (SpO2) on CPAP helmet. The helmet was designed with IoT technology which enables people to receive direct measuring results through a smartphone. The helmet is reusable after replacing the oxygen cylinder and neck adhesive. Ubaidillah and the team hoped that this tool could help healthcare workers and healthcare providers in handling Covid – 19 pandemic.

3D Design and Innovation

the CPAP helmet has several 3D design excellence that facilitates the assembly and dismantling process with materials that are compatible with the patient’s body, reusable after sterilization process of the components, and replacing the oxygen tank and neck adhesive. The IoT component in the helmet aims to monitor oxygen level and saturation. “The Prototype CPAP Helmet is equipped with electronic components including Envitec OOM202 oxygen sensor, max30102 oximeter sensor, Bluetooth HC-05 module, and Arduino mega pro-2560 integrated with the IoT system,” Ubaidillah added.

The oxygen sensor was installed to measure the oxygen level inside the helmet, while the oximeter sensor measured patients’ oxygen saturation when they scanned their fingers on the infra-red sensor. The measurement results will be read by Arduino and sent to the smartphone using the Bluetooth HC-05 module, and the user could monitor the results on their phone in realtime. The study on EMCO materials was based on the pandemic that affected more than 200 countries and infected four million people in Indonesia with a 21-28% mortality rate for patients receiving hospital care per Sunday (17/10/2021) (based on Worldometer data). From the number, 85% of hospitalized Covid-19 patients experienced Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) or breathing failure caused by lung damage due to fluid buildup.

Without prompt action, ARDS could lead to death. ARDS patients are commonly treated with mechanical breathing apparatus using EMCO.

However, EMCO availability is very limited due to the expensive cost of its materials, especially in the Asia Pacific Regions, including Indonesia. In Solo, this apparatus is only available in Moewardi Hospital. EMCO also has short membrane usage and has a potential for leakage due to the contact between the membrane and protein in the blood plasma that reduces water resistance performance of the membrane.

Departing from this phenomenon, four UNS students shared their innovative ideas in the Student Creativity Program (PKM) for Natural Science Research (PKM-RE) and won funding from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology RI and will be presented in the National Student Science Week (PIMNAS) 34 that will be held hybrid.

Jeesice explained that using an ethylcellulose-coated composite membrane with nano-size could solve the issues of membrane usage and leakage in EMCO. “The use of polymer composite membrane is expected to increase membrane strength and prolong its service life,” she added.

The innovation also has better economic value because their ethylcellulose coating was sourced from paper waste that will increase product usage value and reduce pollution. This material is relatively easy to obtain and will increase the bio-compatibility that prevents immune rejection reactions by the human body, hypersensitivity reactions and reduce the risk of biofouling or the accumulation of biological materials on the membrane surface.

The ethylcellulose used in this product succeeded in separating oxygen gas and carbon dioxide, which have the potential for the blood oxygenation process. This potential is also supported with the quantification test that showed that protein could penetrate the membrane and therefore, reducing the risk of leakage. Jeesica hoped that this study could lay the basis of EMCO development in the future, especially in Indonesia. “Including as a rescue device to increase life expectancy for Covid-19 patients, especially those with breathing failure,” Jeesica concluded. This report was shared by the Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho, in the lunch break meeting with journalists in RM Pecel Madiun dan Dawet Ayu Laris Manis on Tuesday  (19/10/2021). Prof. Jamal stated that UNS’s success in preventing its students from getting infected with SARS-CoV-2 is the effectiveness of conditional and gradual principles emphasized by UNS far before opening PTM.

The conditional principle means that students participating in the PTM must be vaccinated against Covid-19 at least the first shop, live in the Solo region, have a permit from parents, and do not have comorbidity or congenital disease. The gradual principle means that UNS limits the capacity of the classroom to 30% of its normal capacity.

“Because UNS students from Solo and surrounding regions are mostly have been vaccinated against Covid-19 with two doses. And we also use the hybrid learning method, so there are (students) learning from home and in the classroom,” Prof. Jamal explained.

To the fellow journalist, the Rector stated that currently, UNS had opened the opportunity for last year’s students to have an undergraduate thesis, master thesis, and dissertation defense offline. But Prof. Jamal reminded that the offline defense should be held gradually because he does not want a large number of students on the campus to minimize the risk of the Covid-19 cluster.

Increasing Student Quota for PTM

On occasion, Prof. Jamal also shared that once the Restriction for Community Activities (PPKM) level of Surakarta is lowered from level 3 to 2 or from level 2 to 1, UNS will consider increasing the quota for students who are allowed to attend PTM. Because since the reopening of PTM on Monday (6/9/2021), UNS only allows 30% of students to attend class in the classroom.

“And we also limit in one day only two courses taught,” Prof. Jamal added.

This means that students who do not meet the criteria to attend PTM and live outside Solo are still attending class online.

“PPKM level 3 with 30%. Then for PPKM, level 2 (the quota) could increase. If to level 1, the participants can be increased again. And this is what we are considered,” Prof. Jamal said. Humas UNS

In the second series, the Conclusion discussed the Green Economics Policy Transformation in Sustainable Development Post Covid-19 Pandemic. This event was held through the Zoom Cloud Meeting platform and was attended by expert speakers in the sectors, including the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, Rusli Abdullah, Rohmat Marzuki, and Satya Hangga Yudha.

The two-hour discussion received great enthusiasm from 150 participants who were actively asking questions during the discussion session. On this occasion, the Vice-Dean for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs FEB UNS, Prof. Dr. Izza Mafruhah, SE, M.Si., stated that this Conclusion Series raises an interesting theme because Covid-19 has created a multidimensional crisis for Indonesia after 1965, 1998, and 2008 crises. The Vice-Dean also explained that the current crisis has a terrific impact on the Indonesian economy that many sectors are failing, and the government has taken many economic policies to achieve economic recovery.

“Many sectors are failing, including the tourism sector,” Prof. Izza stated.

Therefore, it is appropriate that this Conclusion invited the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, to probe into the Ministry’s efforts to support the recovery of the tourism sector because it has a great role in the local economic sector at large and small scales. Several researchers also delivered materials in the discussion, including Rusli Abdullah, Center of Food, Energy and Sustainable Development INDEF researcher, who discussed the prospect of green economy post-pandemic. According to him, the global geopolitical condition plays a vital role in the implementation of a green economy, including Joe Biden winning in the US, who promoted the Green New Deal and committed to the Paris Agreement that was invoked by the previous president.

“As the winner of the second world war, US holds great power. Every step it takes in legal, political, and economic sectors will affect the global patterns, especially in the developing countries,” Rusli concluded. Humas UNS
