Lecturers from the D3 Midwifery Program collaborated with faculty from the D3 Agricultural Product Technology (THP) and D3 Business Management at UNS’s Vocational School and stated that their idea stemmed from seeing how many jackfruit seeds go to waste. “It’s a pity that so many jackfruit seeds are wasted. They have great potential to be transformed into various food products,” Dewi shared, noting the abundance of discarded jackfruit seeds in local markets.

Typically regarded as waste, jackfruit seeds hold substantial potential as ingredients for nutritious and delicious food products. Launched in April 2024, this program involved guiding local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to transform jackfruit seeds, often seen as waste, into appealing, economically valuable food products.

The project began with discussions with Arva Rochmawati, owner of the SME Syukaaza Food Nusantara, whose flagship product is banana chips. The UNS PKM team assisted in enhancing the healthiness and shelf life of chips using a spinner device and explored diversifying jackfruit seeds into chips. However, through a process of trial and error, the team found a new approach: transforming jackfruit seeds into serundeng (a traditional Indonesian dish made from shredded coconut and spices).

The process of making serundeng from jackfruit seeds is simple but requires patience. The seeds are cleaned, oven-dried, finely ground, and then mixed with selected spices to create a savory, crunchy serundeng.

“To make cookies, we blend the finely ground jackfruit seeds with flour, sugar, eggs, and other ingredients. The dough is then shaped and baked until golden,” Arva Rochmawati, owner of Syukaaza Snack, explained.

These products were introduced at the Vokasi Vaganza Expo, an exhibition held as part of UNS’s Vocational School Dies Natalies celebrations, where they received positive feedback from the public. Many were curious about the taste of serundeng and cookies made from jackfruit seeds. “The taste is unique, unlike traditional serundeng, and the texture is crispy,” Ningsih, a local food enthusiast, said.

M. Nur Dewi Kartikasari, S.ST., M.Kes., expressed hope that this success in turning jackfruit seeds into high-value food products will inspire others to get creative with local ingredients. Additionally, this innovation could increase the market value of jackfruit and reduce food waste.

“I hope that jackfruit seed products can eventually reach broader markets, locally and nationally. These could also become a distinctive souvenir from our region, recognized by many,” Dewi shared with uns.ac.id on Monday (11/11/2024).

This initiative supports the 12th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on Responsible Consumption and Production by utilizing readily available local materials that were previously undervalued.

The event started with an opening speech by Septyanto Galan Prakoso, S.I.P., M.Sc., Chairman of ICOSAPS 2024, followed by Prof. Dr. Fitria Rahmawati, S.Si., M.Si., Vice-Rector for Academic and Research Affairs at UNS. Both highlighted the critical importance of collaboration in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for a more sustainable future. The conference featured two plenary sessions addressing key topics related to the SDGs.

In the first session, Dr. Colin Kuehl emphasized the significance of “Sustainability Literacy” as a driving force for promoting sustainable actions in developing countries. He stressed the need to evaluate educational systems to enhance environmentally friendly practices. Following this, Prof. Dr. Novel A. Lyndon explored the issue of illegal immigration and its relation to SDG 10, focusing on the role of migrants in the economy and the challenges of border control, with Malaysia as a case study.

The second session featured Prof. Y.M. Dorien Kartikawangi, who discussed the impact of digitalization on rural resilience and sustainable development through effective communication strategies that spur concrete action. Mr. Vo Lap Phuc presented on the role of ASEAN youth in advancing SDGs through digital platforms, emphasizing the strengthening of ASEAN identity and active political participation. The session concluded with Rino Ardhian Nugroho, S.Sos., M.T.I., Ph.D. from UNS, who shared insights on the smart city concept as a support mechanism for achieving SDGs in Indonesia, focusing on health, clean energy, and sustainable urban development. “This concept aims to foster SDG achievement through technology integration,” Rino explained.

In this competition, Agus presented an innovative project titled “Recycle and Re-energize the Lithium Cell: Turning Lithium Battery Waste into a Blessing.” His concept offers a sustainable solution for processing lithium battery waste, a growing concern due to the rising use of electric vehicles and electronic devices. Agus proposed a method to repurpose discarded lithium batteries through reconditioning and repacking processes, transforming them into valuable resources with increased economic worth.

“This idea not only helps reduce environmental pollution but also supports efforts to achieve Net Zero Emission targets,” Agus explained to uns.ac.id on Tuesday (29/10/2024).

The achievement was announced during the awards ceremony held at the Learning, Innovation, Knowledge, and Exhibition (LIKE) 2024 event at JIEXPO Kemayoran, Jakarta, from October 22 to 24, 2024. Agus Ramelan’s victory adds to UNS’s list of accomplishments and highlights the growing national recognition of academia’s contributions to sustainable technology development.

“I hope this idea will greatly benefit society and the environment while inspiring future sustainability-based innovations,” Agus added.

The NZE Moonshots category, which Agus entered, is part of PLN’s commitment to leading Indonesia’s energy transition. PLN’s initiatives also focus on an integrated green economy aligned with regional development.

The PLN Research and Development Center (Puslitbang) launched the PLN ICE Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) Program under the Idea Generation category, inviting academic participants from universities across Indonesia. Esteemed keynote speakers included Prof. Dr. Ramesh A/L T. Subramaniam from Universiti Malaya, Malaysia; Prof. Dr. Nonglak Meethong from Khon Kaen University, Thailand; Dr. Sunu H. Pranolo, S.T., M.Sc., from UNS; and Rahayu Ginanjar Siwi, M.Si., from PT. Pupuk Kujang, Indonesia. Prof. Dr. Eng. Agus Purwanto, S.T., M.T., Head of the Center of Excellence for Electrical Energy Storage Technology of UNS, also participated in this third ICESTA conference.

The Dean of FT UNS, Prof. Dr. Ir. Wahyudi Sutopo, S.T., M.Si., IPU, officially opened the event, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in reaching Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “Global networks and cultural understanding are essential for engineers and scientists to tackle real-world challenges. We hope this event strengthens international relationships that support SDG achievements,” he remarked.

Keynote speaker Prof. Dr. Ramesh emphasized that interdisciplinary collaboration is critical for innovation aligned with SDG goals, advancing technology, and sustainable development. “Technology must be user-friendly and accessible to everyone, even if the systems behind it are complex,” he stated. Prof. Ramesh encouraged young people to embrace interdisciplinary teamwork, develop resilience, and expand global networks for greater accomplishments.

A testament to innovation and technology development, the event accepted 54 rigorously selected articles, which will be published in prestigious international journals such as Evergreen, the ASEAN Journal of Chemical Engineering, and Open Engineering. Presentations were delivered in person and virtually, providing participants with valuable opportunities for international networking and deepening cross-disciplinary collaboration.

In an interview, Ir. Mujtahid Kaavessina, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., the Conference Chair from the FT UNS Chemical Engineering Department, highlighted the significance of this international event for the program, noting plans to focus more on green technology within the SDG framework for next year’s conference. “This is an excellent start, as this marks ICCEEAS’s inaugural international conference. We hope it serves as a bridge for continued collaboration, facilitating knowledge and research exchange with affiliated institutions,” he shared.

Participants showed great enthusiasm throughout the day-long conference, actively engaging in discussions on various topics. The winners, Yesika Cahya Septiana and Nanda Shevira, are fifth-semester students in the Bachelor’s Program in Midwifery at FK UNS. Their essay addressed the theme of anxiety in pregnant women, offering a unique approach to managing this issue.

“Our essay is titled JOURNEY: Non-Pharmacological Therapy to Reduce Anxiety During Pregnancy. We developed an innovation called JOURNEY, which stands for Journal Therapy to Reduce Antenatal Anxiety,” Yesika explained on Wednesday (9/10/2024).

The innovation centers around using a journal for expectant mothers to document their daily emotions and experiences. By expressing their feelings in writing, the technique—known as “expressive writing”—aims to alleviate anxiety in pregnant women.

Nanda Shevira added that their essay stood out due to its practical application. “Many competitors presented only ideas, while we emphasized the innovation itself, even creating a prototype. This, along with some initial testing on respondents, convinced the judges,” Nanda shared.

Despite their busy class schedules, the students found time to prepare for the competition. “Our preparation was flexible; we worked on it outside of class hours, dividing tasks as needed,” Nanda said. Yesika agreed, noting that teamwork and task delegation were essential.

Yesika confirmed this, emphasizing that as a team, task distribution is essential and must be managed effectively. In preparing for the competition, they received guidance from Noviyati Rahardjo Putri, S.SiT., M.Tr.Keb., a lecturer in the Midwifery Bachelor’s Program at FK UNS. “Yes, Ms. Novi (Noviyati Rahardjo Putri, S.SiT., M.Tr.Keb.) served as our mentor,” Yesika shared.

Their advice to students interested in essay competitions is to keep honing their skills by researching various references and exploring new potential without fear.

The MEC is an annual event featuring a variety of national competitions and seminars. The finalists presented their essays in person in Lombok on Saturday (21/9/2024), across two stages: an initial presentation to compete for gold medals within each sub-theme, followed by a final presentation for the nine gold medal teams vying for the national title. The UNS team excelled, winning the gold medal in the Education sub-theme of MEC 5 and ultimately taking first place after presenting their essay.

Speaking to uns.ac.id on Monday (7/10/2024), Juhdan shared that the team had prepared for the competition since July.

“Our preparation began in July. Since the three of us are members of the Sahabat Masjid Nurul Huda at UNS, we were able to work on the proposal intensively between mosque activities. The tight proposal submission deadline required us to manage online and offline essay preparation amid our organizational and academic commitments,” Juhdan explained.

The team’s essay concentrated on an educational initiative called “Semar Lind.” This innovative learning tool is designed to assist visually impaired students in learning mathematics.

“We chose the education sub-theme and developed an innovative learning tool for visually impaired students using advanced technological features. We named our creation ‘Semar-Lind’ (Smart Mathematics Book for the Blind). Our goal is to make learning easier for those in need and to enhance their interest in mathematics through engaging formats like a pop-up book and audio book,” Juhdan elaborated.

Juhdan and his team expressed pride in representing UNS on a national stage and bringing home the first-place title for their alma mater.

“My team and I hope this achievement inspires us and our fellow UNS students to continue striving for excellence throughout our time here,” Juhdan added.

This teaching assignment is the first step in a faculty exchange initiative. Two lecturers, Dr. Susantiningrum, S.Pd., SE., M.AB., and Dr. Tutik Susilowati, M.Si., were assigned to teach at Unesa. The official handover took place in the PAP classroom at Unesa on Tuesday (3/9/2024). The event was attended by program leaders, lecturers, and students. Dr. Susantiningrum, S.Pd., SE., M.AB., delivered lectures on the Entrepreneurship course, while Dr. Tutik Susilowati, M.Si., taught Organizational Science.

This lecturer exchange program is designed to share knowledge and experience between the two institutions. Dr. Susantiningrum, who also serves as the Head of PAP UNS, expressed her pride in the successful implementation of the collaboration.

“We are very proud to realize this collaboration. Our presence in Surabaya is a tangible example of our commitment to expanding educational outreach and sharing expertise. We are confident this will greatly benefit academic development on both sides,” Dr. Susantiningrum said.

Brillian Rosy, S.Pd., M.Pd., the Head of the PAP Program at Unesa, warmly welcomed the arrival of the UNS lecturers. She expressed her hope that this exchange would enrich the academic experiences of both the students and lecturer at Unesa, marking an important step in the partnership between the two programs. She also believes that the collaboration will enhance the quality of education in both institutions.

During their assignment, Dr. Susantiningrum and Dr. Tutik will be involved in academic activities such as lectures and group discussions with Unesa’s academic community. Soon, two lecturers from Unesa’s PAP Program, Dr. Farij Ibadil Maula, S.Pd., M.Pd., and Novi Trisnawati, S.Pd., M.Pd., will also be assigned to teach at UNS. This collaboration is part of both institutions’ ongoing efforts to improve the quality of education and expand their academic networks. Through this faculty exchange, students and lecturers from both universities are expected to gain new insights and valuable experiences that will support their academic development.

The involvement of UNS lecturers in off-campus activities is evidence of the university’s success in implementing Key Performance Indicator (IKU) 3. Seven students from the D3 Informatics Engineering SV UNS program also actively participated in organizing and conducting the training sessions.

Rudi Hartono, S.Si., M.Eng., explained that the goal of this initiative was to enhance teachers’ ability and readiness to leverage digital technology in support of learning, in line with the rapid advancements in information technology. “The event was attended by 50 teachers from SMAN 1 Surakarta, who enthusiastically participated in various training sessions prepared by the UNS team,” Rudi told uns.ac.id on Tuesday (27/8/2024).

On the first day, participants were introduced to the topic “Using AI to Support Learning.” This session emphasized the importance of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the teaching and learning process to create a more interactive and adaptive learning experience. Participants learned about various AI applications that can be implemented in classrooms and how to operate them.

The second day continued with a workshop on “Enhancing Technical Skills in Educational Media Development.” During this session, teachers were trained on how to develop and utilize various effective and engaging digital learning media for students. The technical skills covered included the use of media development software, the creation of interactive content, and the application of multimedia techniques to enhance the appeal and effectiveness of learning.

As part of this digital transformation, the teachers were also introduced to an e-learning platform specifically developed to support learning at SMAN 1 Surakarta, accessible at https://elearning.smansaska.org/  . “This platform is expected to become the main tool for delivering more effective and efficient digital learning,” Rudi added.

\With the success of this initiative, it is hoped that the teachers at SMAN 1 Surakarta will be better prepared and more confident in adopting digital technology in the learning process and capable of developing more innovative educational media. This digital education transformation is expected to improve the quality of education at SMAN 1 Surakarta and have a positive impact on students in the future.

Hartatik S.Si., M.Si., the head of the research group, emphasized the increasing importance of technology in education in the rapidly evolving digital era. AI technology in learning is inevitable, necessitating enhanced teacher competencies and digital infrastructure in schools. The presence of such technology is often misused by students for completing school assignments. Based on this situation, teachers are required to enhance their competencies in using information technology to effectively and accurately utilize AI. Additionally, the lack of skills or educational background related to the subjects taught by the teachers presents a challenge that needs to be addressed promptly, as students require a proper understanding of the material taught.

This training aims to assist senior high school educators in leveraging AI technology to create teaching materials based on each student’s learning patterns, needs, strengths, and weaknesses. It also helps teachers manage administrative tasks such as creating teaching materials, lesson plans, scheduling, and assessments. “This training is expected to help educators teach students about AI utilization responsibly and ethically using virtual tutor-based learning,” Hartatik explained to uns.ac.id on Tuesday (11/6/2024).

The training, held on April 22-23, 2024, was enthusiastically received by the teachers of SMA N 2 Surakarta. The event began with an opening remark by the Headmaster, Drs. Mohammad Amir Zubaidi, M.Pd. In his remarks, the headmaster encouraged the teachers to make the most of this valuable learning opportunity.

“I hope your participation in this training is filled with enthusiasm and eagerness. Use this opportunity to learn and exchange experiences with the speakers and other participants. I am confident that by attending this training, you will gain a lot of new knowledge and insights that can be applied in the teaching process at school,” Mohammad Amir said.

The first speaker, Berliana Kusuma Riasti, S.T., M.Eng., presented material on ‘Introduction to Digital Literacy and AI Concepts’. The next speaker, Andy Supriyadi, S.Kom., M.Cs., discussed ‘Creating AI-Based Learning Media using tools like ChatGPT, Bard AI, and Questionwell, and studio.d-id.com’. The following speaker, Fiddin Yusfida A’La S.T., M.Eng., elaborated on ‘Creating AI-Based Learning Media using tools like Quizizz, Kahoot, Canva, Google Forms, and Grammarly’. The last speaker, Nurul Firdaus S.Kom., M.Info.Tech., shared knowledge on ‘Detecting AI-Generated Content using tools like Winston AI, Turnitin, AI Detector, Plagiarisma.net, and Scribbr’.

After the training, the teachers practiced using AI technology and various tools introduced by the speakers, with support provided for any difficulties encountered. Participants were awarded certificates for their participation in the Digital Literacy and AI Utilization Training, equivalent to 32 JP.

The participants welcomed this event and showed great enthusiasm throughout the Digital Literacy and AI Utilization Training. This Community Service Grant Group Research (PKM-HGR) activity is expected to help improve the AI literacy and skills of teachers at SMA N 2 Surakarta, ultimately enhancing the quality of education in Indonesia.

The training took place at the Cybersecurity Hub, located on the second floor of the Solo Trade Center in Solo Technopark. Participants included employees from eight local government agencies from the cities of Solo, Sukoharjo, Wonogiri, Sragen, Ngawi, Grobogan, Semarang, and Madiun, attending the two-day training session.

The Cyber Security Training 2024 was inaugurated by the Dean of Fatisda UNS, Drs. Harjana, M.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D. The event was also attended by Heny Ermawati, S.H., M.Hum., from the Surakarta City Communication, Informatics, Statistics, and Encryption Agency, and the Head of the UNS Information and Communication Technology Technical Implementation Unit (UPT TIK), Prof. Drs. Bambang Harjito, M.App.Sc., Ph.D.

Heny Ermawati expressed her appreciation for the collaboration between the Surakarta City Government and the two universities in realizing this cybersecurity training. She emphasized the importance of information security in the fundamental operations of government. Heny cited the frequent appearance of online gambling advertisements on government websites as an example.

“This event is beneficial for protecting the infrastructure owned by each city and regency. Effective protection can support our daily tasks,” Heny said.

In his remarks, Drs. Harjana, M.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., compared the rapid development of technology to Newton’s Second Law, where every action has an equal and opposite reaction. He highlighted that as technology advances, so do hacking and data theft techniques. Cybersecurity has become a global issue, affecting all sectors, including government. He expressed hope that the Cyber Security Training 2024 would be the beginning of ongoing collaborative activities.

“We hope this collaboration continues beyond this event. Cybersecurity training like this is essential for protecting data. Given the rapid development, participants need at least a basic understanding,” Drs. Harjana, Ph.D. stated.

Winarno, S.Si., M.Eng., a lecturer in the Informatics undergraduate program at Fatisda UNS, began the session with a comprehensive theoretical explanation. His material covered crucial aspects of cybersecurity, including attacks, threats, and vulnerabilities. Winarno detailed various types of cyberattacks, such as malware, phishing, and ransomware, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and effectively addressing system vulnerabilities.

“A good system is not only one that functions well but also one that can withstand various attacks,” Winarno said.

The first day’s training continued with a practical session on CompTIA Security++ led by Bagus Setiawan, S.Si. This session provided participants with the opportunity to apply their newly acquired knowledge through simulations and hands-on exercises, reinforcing their understanding of security protocols and data protection techniques.

“Hands-on practice is crucial for truly understanding how security concepts are applied in real-world situations. Through these exercises, participants become better prepared to face cybersecurity challenges in the workplace,” Bagus said.

Participants showed great enthusiasm, configuring various security settings and conducting attack simulations to learn how to protect their systems effectively. The direct interaction with instructors and fellow participants offered a deeper and more collaborative learning experience.

The second day of training focused on introducing and practicing the use of the RapixEngine system, an innovative product from Rapixus.
