The PKM, titled “Downstreaming and Partnership in the Development of Home Coffee Industry in Plangkrongan Village, Poncol, Magetan,” aims to support coffee farmers in Plangkrongan Village as their transition to learning coffee processing. The goal is for the community to become more engaged in coffee farming, thereby promoting Plangkrongan Village as a significant coffee-producing area in Magetan.

“Moreover, this area is also known for producing durian, which further supports the development of this village as a tourist destination,” Dr. Agung said to uns.ac.id on Wednesday (12/6/2024).

Jumiran, the head of the Makmur Farmers Group, mentioned that coffee farming is a new venture for farmers in Plangkrongan Village. Therefore, the equipment donation from UNS is very useful for the farmers in processing and serving coffee to create an authentic taste. “We hope this assistance will be beneficial for us,” he said.

Wawan Setyobudi, the Head of Plangkrongan Village, expressed his gratitude to FP UNS for donating the barista equipment to the Makmur Farmers Group. He emphasized that this donation would help establish Plangkrongan Village as a coffee-producing area in Magetan. The barista equipment is also expected to attract young people to engage in coffee farming.

“Many young people, including here, are not interested in working in agriculture. This initiative is hoped to draw their attention, as coffee is becoming a trend everywhere,” Wawan explained.

After the handover of the barista equipment and the sessions on coffee cultivation and social media marketing, the team was then taken to the local coffee plantations in the Gunung Tambal area.

In addition to interacting with students, international students also visited several home industries in the village, including tempeh, banana chips, and sermier chip production. This activity provided a firsthand experience for the students to learn about the process of making local food.

“To delve deeper into village life, students were divided into several groups and stayed with their host families who are local residents. In the evening, they enjoyed and learned the Reog dance, which is one of the cultural treasures of East Java,” Rino explained.

On the second day, the activities continued with exploring nature to fields to practice planting peanuts, visiting a cattle farm, and learning about livestock management. The event concluded with a workshop on playing lesung (a traditional rice pounding tool) with members of the Sekolah Lansia Tangguh (or Selatang), which is one of the empowerment programs for the elderly in the village.

The “UNS Goes to Village” program not only provides cultural insights to international students but also introduces villagers to the diversity of world cultures. “It is hoped that this activity can enhance understanding and appreciation of Javanese local culture and strengthen the relationship between international students and the local community,” Rino added.

UNS – Students from the International Relations Program at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, along with their team, achieved remarkable success by winning four awards at the Global Youth Innovation Summit (GYIS) 2024. Izzatunisa Anandari Santosa, representing UNS as a delegate, and her team were honored at the event held in Singapore and Malaysia from April 22 to 25, 2024.

Izzatunisa Anandari Santosa, commonly known as Izza, shared that GYIS is a program aimed at encouraging young people to realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through cultural and educational exchange while facilitating delegates to compete in the SDGs Project Presentation. Delegates were grouped to create and develop projects addressing specific SDGs.

Izza and her team focused on SDGs number 4 and 10, quality education and reducing inequalities, by addressing the high dropout rates in West Sulawesi caused by economic hardships and the high cost of education.

After conducting an online survey in Polewali Mandar (the district with the highest dropout rates in West Sulawesi) and interviewing a team member from West Sulawesi, they found widespread complaints about expensive education costs, difficult access to information, gender discrimination, and other issues. These findings highlighted the high demand for educational scholarships. In response, Izza and her team decided to establish a Non-Profit Organization (NPO) called Youth Inclusive Education Corner (YIECO).

“YIECO’s main program is scholarship mentoring, aimed at helping students, gap year individuals, and those wishing to continue their education apply for scholarships with the assistance of experienced mentors,” Izza explained on Friday (17/5/2024).

Izza added that YIECO addresses the high education costs and difficult access to scholarship information reported by students through their survey, serving as a bridge to help students utilize available scholarships to support their education. YIECO plans to collaborate with local schools to facilitate mentoring and broaden its impact.

“To support program funding, YIECO will also collaborate with other educational entities,” she added.

Izza and her team successfully presented and introduced the YIECO project at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) on April 23, 2024, to judges, delegates, and other attendees. Their outstanding performance and teamwork led them to win the Best Team award. Additionally, they secured second place in the Best SDGs Project Video category, highlighting the high dropout rates in West Sulawesi and introducing YIECO. Izza also achieved individual honors, winning first place as Best Team Leader for her leadership qualities and abilities and second place as Best Delegate for her active participation, performance, and contributions throughout the program. Humas UNS

Under the guidance of Dr. Emi Widiyanti, S.P., M.Si., the MBKM group, consisting of six students—Adinda Putri Sarah Wibowo, Adhelia Kusumawardhani, Agtha Fina Rizkyana, Fanisa Tasya Nabilla, Irfan Fajar Nasrullah, and Jessica Velintina—helped and directed the students in scriptwriting and video production. Each MBKM student was responsible for a group of 8-10 students, providing feedback and corrections as needed.

On Thursday (16/5/2024), the workshop continued at the Solopos office on Jl. Adi Sucipto, No. 190, Karangasem, Laweyan, Surakarta. The visit started with a tour of Solopos Radio, where students had the opportunity to participate in a live broadcast.

Accompanied by MBKM students, the participants toured the office from the lobby to the newsroom, capturing videos according to their scripts and editing them using the Capcut application. Their work was then reviewed by Deasy Puspitaningrum, a content creator from Solopos.

Adinda Putri Sarah Wibowo, the head of the MBKM group, reported that the event went smoothly. She highlighted the collaboration between the students, Solopos, and SMP N 7 Surakarta as an excellent opportunity.

“I enjoyed participating because this is also part of the KKN (Community Service Program) MBKM on procedures from Solopos. This company not only focuses on profit but also contributes to the community, as evidenced by this training,” she said on Thursday (16/5/2024).

Adinda hopes that the videography workshop will positively impact the students and that they can share their knowledge with others, as journalism is beneficial in many ways.

“Hopefully, the imparted knowledge will give the younger students new insights and can be applied in their school environment, such as producing podcasts or creating content for MPK, OSIS, or the school’s Instagram,” she added.

The videography workshop is a continuation of last year’s podcast production training. Siti Latifah, the principal of SMP N 7 Surakarta, said that partnering with professionals like Solopos is one way to facilitate students in developing their literacy skills.

“With this workshop, students will practice both literacy and numeracy. For instance, calculating the duration of a video involves numeracy, while choosing a theme and writing a script involves literacy,” Ifah said, as she is commonly known, on Wednesday (15/5/2024).

As a pioneer school, SMP N 7 Surakarta integrates both intra-curricular and co-curricular learning, aligning with the Merdeka Belajar Program’s Pancasila Student Profile.

“Co-curricular activities include the Strengthening Pancasila Student Profile (P5) Project, and this workshop is relevant because it fosters independent and creative character traits. Hopefully, it will enhance students’ abilities in these areas,” she added. HUMAS UNS

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta hosted the Campus Visit IFG Progress 2024 event on Thursday, May 16, 2024. The Indonesia Financial Group (IFG) organized a seminar at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) UNS, focusing on the topic “Basic Literacy and Introduction to the Insurance and Pension Fund Industry.”

Moderated by Ayya Agmulia Asmarani Islam, the seminar featured four competent speakers from various institutions. These included Chief Senior Research Associate IFG Progress, Ibrahim Kholilul Rohman; Research Associate IFG Progress, Rizky Rizaldi Ronaldo and Afif Narawangsa Luviyanto; and FEB UNS lecturer, Dila Maghrifani, S.E., B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D. The presentations were delivered in the Konimex Room, Bachtiar Effendi Building, FEB UNS.

The seminar aimed to introduce the Non-Bank Financial Industry (IKNB), particularly insurance and pension funds, to students. This introduction was based on the numerous activities and risks that individuals may encounter, which could impact themselves or their belongings. In certain situations, these risks could incur significant costs if borne personally.

Ibrahim highlighted the importance of understanding protection from third parties, such as insurance companies and the government. He emphasized the need for insurance and pension funds as individual protection measures, aiming to change mindsets and raise awareness across society.

“We reach out to the current generation in college because they will soon start families, begin working, and more. UNS is the eighth campus we have visited,” Ibrahim said.

IFG Progress recognizes that improving the IKNB requires extensive support and efforts from various stakeholders, including academic institutions. The seminar aimed to help students gain a comprehensive understanding and broaden their knowledge of career prospects in the IKNB, particularly in insurance and pension funds.

Increasing student interest and motivation to become top talents in the IKNB industry is expected to positively impact the development of the non-bank financial sector, especially insurance and pension funds.

“The challenge in educating students is that they perceive insurance and pension funds as distant concerns. Raising awareness about the importance of insurance as risk mitigation is crucial,” he added.

Insurance itself has several types, each with different functions and uses. It is divided into four categories: life insurance, general insurance, social insurance, and mandatory insurance. Life insurance provides protection against the risk of death. General insurance offers various protections for individuals, businesses, and property. Social insurance is a government program ensuring the protection and security of all citizens for a protected life, and mandatory insurance targets specific markets.

Similarly, the pension fund industry addresses the needs of individuals who, upon reaching non-productive age and deciding to retire, no longer receive wages to meet their living needs. This increases the risk of falling into poverty. Pension funds play a crucial role in maintaining and protecting their lives post-retirement.

Pension funds are programs aimed at ensuring the well-being of society during retirement or other circumstances. They help maintain a stable standard of living even after retirement. Various pension fund programs are implemented across different societal layers. Mandatory pension funds cover all employees, including the army, police, and civil servants, while voluntary pension funds are managed by specific companies. Humas UNS
