UNS — Communication Science Program faculty member Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Monika Sri Yuliarti, S.Sos., M.Si, shared her concern on the glorification of sexual abuser performed by the media.
This concern was shared through an interview with Narasi Newsroom on the video titled “SJ and the Dangers of Sexual Abuser Glorification” on Sunday (5/9/2021).
“I am worried that the television viewers consider what makes SJ imprisoned is something understandable,” Monika Sri Yuliarti, S.Sos., M.Si., stated.
She stated that prolonged glorification by the media on the sexual abuser could reduce people’s sensitivity.
Monika Sri Yuliarti, S.Sos., M.Si, is concerned that glorification on SJ performed by an entertainment program on national television could make people stop feeling ashamed for doing sexual violence.
“People do not feel it is wrong when they witness sexual violence. It is hazardous if it keeps continuing,” she said.
In the interview with the Narasi Newsroom, Monika Sri Yuliarti, S.Sos., M.Si also said that glorification over sexual abusers could make the victim feel more scared to speak up.
This should never happen because the freedom of sexual abusers in the community could harm vulnerable people such as women and children.
“(We are) worried that the reporting is too open and delivered differently, which will throw him down or his personal life messed around,” she concluded. Humas UNS
