UNS — Arabic Language and Literature Program Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a curriculum workshop on Monday (10/5/2021). “This workshop also aims to invite suggestions from the related stakeholders for our program curriculum and to gather current information on the curriculum for the Arabic Literature program from the speakers,” Dr. Eva Farhah explained.

The workshop was opened by the Vice-Dean for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs of FIB UNS, Prof. Tri Wiratno, who represented the Dean of FIB UNS, Prof. Warto, who could not attend the workshop. Prof. Tri Wiratno stated that the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka Program promoted by the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Makarim, demands students to learn actively on the campus and outside of the campus. Therefore, curriculum workshops can be used as a means of discussion among the universities to reconstruct their curriculum according to the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka Program.

“(We) hope that through this workshop, the Arabic Language and Literature Program could adopt and apply the suggestions provided by the speakers,” Prof. Tri Wiratno said.

Muhammad Yunus Anis, S.S., M.A, acted as the moderator in the event. In the first session, Prof. Ainin discussed the Reconstruction of the Curriculum Based on Learning Outcomes under the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka Program. He started the discussion with the curriculum concept, which continues to develop along with the current development. Therefore reconstruction is required every two years. Prof. Ainin also shared learning outcomes principles in the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka curriculum, the Relevance and Flexibility principles. He also added that the concept is not new as in 70-85’s, students are allowed to take minor courses. “So, after studying the Arabic Language, we could also take courses from other programs,” he said.

Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka Program requires university graduates to have double competencies, their primary and new competence through outside program activities. These competencies will equip graduates with the knowledge, attitude, and general or specific skills. However, Prof. Ainin suggested that the coverage of learning outcomes for the additional competence is implemented gradually.

The second speaker, Dr. Asep, discussed curriculum reconstruction based on his experience in the Arabic Language and Literature Program UIN Bandung. He explained that one of the adaptation forms from his program in the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka Program is by implementing eight programs, including student exchange, internship, research program, humanities project, student entrepreneurship program, independent study, rural project, and teaching.

“Student exchange provides an opportunity for collaboration between UIN Bandung and UNS,” Dr. Asep stated. Humas UNS
