UNS — Working in social field provides distinct satisfaction for Dian Nugroho, an alumnus of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta. For him, sharing happiness and benefit others around him gives meaning to his life. Starting from his care, he works in entrepreneurial fields in producing Batik Ciprat that employs people with disabilities in its production process.
His business is located in Pucung Village, Kismantoro Subdistrict, Wonogiri District, and operates under Sheltered Workshop Peduli (SWP) Karya Barokah as the business name. Dian innovations are in the products and marketing process. His product is a combination of batik tulis and batik ciprat. His innovation results from his past education in fine arts and textile development and his experience during Student Community Service Program (KKN).
“I can guarantee that this is the only one in Wonogiri and even in Indonesia which produce Batik Ciprat combined with Batik Tulis with the help from people with disabilities,” Dian said in a communication with uns.ac.id team.
Batik Ciprat was established in 2018 as Pucung Program to facilitate people with disabilities. The village has more than 50 people with disabilities such as mental retardation, deaf, mute, and quadriplegic. In 2018 created Batik Ciprat under the supervision from Center for Social Rehabilitation of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (Balai Besar Rehabilitasi Sosial Penyandang Disabilitas Intelektual – BBRSPDI) Kartini, Temanggung, Ministry of Social Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemensos RI). Currently, ten people with disabilities are actively involved in the business.
Dian decided to participate in the business after he completed his degree in September 2020. With his hard works in innovating Batik Ciprat, he was announced as the winner of Desamind Award 1.0 in Social Entrepreneurship on Saturday (20/3/2021). He stated that the result was surprising. He said that this competition makes him more motivated to continue learning and creating in textile and batik fields. He hopes that in the future, Batik Ciprat can be known at the international level. He also reminded university students to apply their knowledge to benefit their community.
“I learn a lot from this (business). For me, this kind of service makes my life meaningful,” Dian said.
Dian also reminded his fellow students to continue creating and take a lesson from people with disabilities who continue working despite their disabilities. It needs time to teach his fellows in Batik Ciprat, but if these people can do this, people without disabilities can do better. He also reminded me that one’s shortcomings might be the reason for one strength. Thus, it is unwise to value someone from their shortcomings.
Batik Ciprat is currently marketed to governmental institutions for their uniform, local people in Wonogiri, and general people. The information on this product can be accessed in its Instagram account @batik_ciprat_pucung and Facebook page Batik Ciprat Karya Barokah. Last month, the business collaborated with Didiet Mulyana and aired Instagram live with the national designer. Dian also works as an animation teacher in SMK Dayawangsa Wonogiri and is waiting for his graduation ceremony in May 2021. HUMAS UNS
