UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta student carved another achievement at the national level. This time, exciting news came from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (FMIPA). Aulia Maulani Syifa Nur Hidayati and Muhammad Zidni Subarkah, Statistics Program student of 2019, successfully won the 2nd prize in a national essay competition.

The students were competing in the Socio-Political Science Week (PKSP) 2021 held by the Student Executive Board (BEM) Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol) Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY). The winners were announced through PSKP 2021 official Instagram account on Wednesday (28/7/2021).

When contacted by the uns.ac.id team, Muhammad Zidni Subarkah explained the idea they discussed in their essay titled “Reality (Reading While Learning Technology) Program: The Efforts to Increase Children Reading Interest in 3T Regions”. The essay was written based on their eagerness to share their ideas on education programs or Indonesia’s outermost, remote, and underdeveloped (3T) regions. Muhammad Zidni Subarkah added that the technical facilities in the 3T regions are not adequate to support education.

The pandemic is also highlighted in the essay because the digitalization that occurs due to the pandemic pushes all regions to adapt themselves in adopting the technology. Therefore, their essay was developed to prevent these regions from being further left behind. “When the advanced regions are pressurized and develop further (in terms of technological skills), the 3T regions are also pressurized to learn the technology,” Muhammad Zidni Subarkah explained.

Discussing Equal Education for 3T Regions, UNS Students won 2nd Prize in Essay Competition

The Reality Program promoted by Muhammad Zidni Subarkah and Aulia Maulani Syifa Nur Hidayati is expected to improve children’s interest in reading and technology introduction in 3T regions. The mechanism of their proposal is to encourage children to read/learning about the technology they will use before using the tools. For example, children are asked to read about phones or computers before actually using phones and computers.

“To kill two birds with one stone. It could benefit children in 3T regions,” Muhammad Zidni Subarkah stated.

During the preparation stage, the students also conduct a study to determine the target region, the method to build up facilities and infrastructure, and the hardware and software set up. The essay also has several sub-programs, including good writing and reading books, learning technology, and video conference education. Their success is a proud achievement for them and UNS because they won over 200 other participants. The team shared their gratitude to all people who have helped them during the competition.

“Hopefully, this essay could inspire its readers to realize this program. Thus, equal education could be improved,” Muhammad Zidni Subarkah hoped. He also wished that UNS students could continue creating and innovating for UNS. He thinks that students might be proud of UNS, but they should also make UNS proud to have them. Humas UNS
