UNS – Doctoral Program (S-3) Indonesian Language Education (PBI) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta in collaboration with the Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM) UNS and the Surakarta City Education Office held a “Workshop on Developing Thematic Digital Comics as Media for Learning the Confident Character of Elementary School Students” on Wednesday (14/6/2023).

There were three resource persons in this workshop. They were Prof. Dr. Andayani, M.Pd. as the Head Program of the S-3 PBI FKIP UNS, Dr. Veronika Unun, M.Pd. as a lecturer at the Universitas Veteran Bangun Nusantara (Univet) Sukoharjo, and Lalita Gilang, S.Sn., M.Ds. as a lecturer in the Faculty of Arts and Design (FSRD) UNS.

The activity was opened by the Head of the Surakarta City Elementary School Education Division, Tarno, S.Pd., M.Pd. “This workshop is expected to increase teacher competence in making learning media, especially to increase students’ self-confidence after this pandemic,” he explained.

Then the workshop was continued with the delivery of material by Dr. Veronika Unun, M.Pd. as a lecturer at Univet Sukoharjo with material entitled “The Role of Stories in Character Education for Elementary School Children”.

“The most effective character education is done through stories and role models. This is because early childhood cannot think abstractly, so learning is done by imitating. Therefore, the teacher must be a role model of good morals and character. Then, teachers can also use folklore as a tool to educate and build children’s character,” Dr. Veronika explained.

Then it was the presentation of material by Prof. Andayani as the Head Program of the S-3 PBI FKIP UNS Program about self-confidence for students.

“Some conditions currently experienced by students are students feeling insecure about themselves. For example, students are awkward when dealing with other people, they are afraid to speak, they find it difficult to convey the conditions they face, they withdraw from society, and they feel hesitated. This should be immediately addressed by parents and teachers. What can be done is to bring courage to students with piety and gratitude to God. Students are trained to have the courage to express their opinions using language. Students are trained to always appear neat and good,” Prof. Andayani explained.

Finally, the event continued with the delivery of material by Lalita Gilang, S.Sn., M.Ds. as a lecturer at FSRD UNS about creating comic strips.

“In creating comic strips, teachers can use Canva to make them. The order of making comic strips is: the teacher can make a storyline, then a story board, and finishing. Creating storylines or moments are that will appear in comics. Making storyboards or pictures are according to the moments, dialogues and characters that must appear. For finishing, it can be in the form of coloring,” Lalita, M.Ds. explained.  Then the event continued with the practice of making comics by workshop participants and question-answer session.
