UNSPencak Silat is one of martial arts in Indonesia that is also useful for the person who expertise this martial art for self-protection. This sport can also train people’s concentration. Those reason lies behind Nadia Haq Umami Nur Cahyani, a student majoring in the Education of Sport Coaching of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Universitas Sebelas Maret (FKIP UNS) to pursue Pencak Silat.

Nadia admitted that she knew Pencak Silat since she was in the third-grade of Elementary School. This began with the frequent view of her watching her father who practiced martial art at home.

“Actually, my father was the former national athlete. He ever participated in Sea Games. Then, my father introduced the martial arts to me since I was a kid and I am interested in it,” Nadia explained.

The girl who is familiarly called Nadia has gotten many achievements both in the national and international championships since she started doing martial art. She ever joined the Pekan Olahraga Nasional (also known as PON) in 2016 and she got bronze medal. Then she also joined Pekan Olahraga Mahasiswa Nasional (POMNAS) in 2017 and she got gold medal for fighter and got bronze medal for single art achievement. She got second champion in ASEAN School Games 2013 in Vietnam and first champion in Silat Championship 2017 in Malaysia. Recently, she also got the first champion in May 2018 when she competed in UNJ Open Competition. She admitted that there is no other choice but never give up and train hard to become the champion. Furthermore, Nadia stated that from the many number of championships she had competed, PON was the most memorable championship for Nadia.

“PON was memorable because it is the most prestigious event in Indonesia. Besides, many national athletes started their debuts in this competition so it really makes me proud to participate,” Nadia said.

Father as a Source of Inspiration

Nadia admitted that her father was the source of inspiration in the world of martial art.

“The one who trains me since I was a little kid is my father. He continues to train me until I now,” Nadia, who was born on August 12, 1998 mentioned.

Nadia told that she always keeps a message from her father.

“My father always told me not to give up and cry if I lose the game. If I lose, I must not cry. Losing the game should be self-introspection. If I win, I am not allowed to be arrogant,” Nadia ended the interview session. humas-red.uns.ac.id/Tni/Dty
