UNSThe Environmental Science doctoral program at the Graduate School of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held an Expert Lecture with the theme “Microalgae Development for Liquid Waste Treatment, CO2 Emission Reduction, and Environmentally Friendly Energy Production.” The expert lecture was attended by active students, alumni, and lecturers of the Environmental Science doctoral program, taking place at UNS Inn on Tuesday (22/5/2024). The lecture was also conducted in a hybrid format, allowing alumni to access from anywhere.
Prof. Dr. Drs. Pranoto, M.Sc., the Head of the Environmental Science doctoral program at UNS Graduate School, stated that for this expert lecture, the program brought in Prof. Dr. Eng. Ir. Arief Budiman, M.S., IPU, from the Center of Excellence for Higher Education Science and Technology (PUI-PT) Microalgae and the Energy Study Center (PSE) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) as the speaker.
The Expert Lecture was opened by the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Research, and Student Affairs of UNS Graduate School, Prof. Dr. sc. agr. Ir. Adi Ratriyanto, S.Pt., M.P., IPM, ASEAN Eng. This expert lecture is an annual routine program organized by the Environmental Science doctoral program, aimed at intensively monitoring students to ensure they complete their studies effectively.
The objective of this Expert Lecture is to enhance the insight and knowledge of students on how microalgae can be utilized for liquid waste treatment, thereby reducing water pollution. “Moreover, students will learn about the role of microalgae in absorbing CO2, aiding in greenhouse gas emission reduction. The lecture also covers the process of converting microalgae into environmentally friendly and sustainable bioenergy. With this knowledge, students are expected to contribute to innovative solutions to environmental and energy issues,” Prof. Pranoto explained.
During this expert lecture, Prof. Dr. Eng. Ir. Arief Budiman, M.S., IPU, from PUI-PT Microalgae and PSE UGM, conveyed that microalgae development can be utilized across various fields, including waste treatment, energy, as a food source for humans and animals, and in personal care/cosmetics.
Participants engaged in discussions guided by moderator Dr. Siti Khoiriyah, M.Si. Alumni and students from various fields such as health, engineering, agriculture, management, economics, chemistry, animal husbandry, and others showed great enthusiasm for participating in this event, with many responses indicating a keen interest in the microalgae development material.
