UNS — The current industrial 4.0 and digitization have become a new challenge in the workplace. Referring to a survey in 2018, 78% of the employees admit that digitization puts some pressure on them. The current employees must change their work ethics. Other than digitization, the young generation right now must face a competitive job market. Fresh graduates are no longer only competing with a fellow fresh graduate, but also the senior with more experience. Hence, fresh graduate job seekers face difficulty to offer special skills amid the vast numbers of job seekers from various categories.

“Because we are now in the competitive job market with limited vacancies and uncountable job seekers, automatically we must face a challenge to differentiate our identity to others,” reveals Gilang I Nata Praja as the speaker in the Student Career Webinar by CDC UNS on Friday (25/06/2021).

The Assistant for Human Capital Director in PT. Pertamina (Persero) explains the challenges faced by job seekers as the impact of digitization in the form of automation. Automation will bring certain effects, such as jobs lost, jobs gain, and jobs changed. Especially after the Covid-19 pandemic that hit almost all countries.

The challenges are in line with a survey conducted by Global Work Economic Forum, which states that automation does not eliminate employment or job, but creating new jobs. Therefore, job seekers need to upgrade their skills to adapt to the new job.

“Approximately 23 million jobs will be replaced with automation, 27 – 46 million jobs will be created through automation. So, there is still a surplus, there will be new jobs available,” Gilang reveals in his presentation regarding the shadow of automation of work in Indonesia. “Ten million out of 27-46 million new jobs will be part of the new types of occupations or new positions that do not exist before,” he added.

Meanwhile, to catch the productivity benefits of automation, jobs that cannot be done by machines will increase. This will also apply to the data collection and processing sector. Therefore, Gilang stresses the importance of alignment between education institutions and job providers. “The type of position that will be eliminated in the future, will involve some kind of repetitive positions. Followed by jobs/positions with low efficiency or extravagant, the one that needs huge resource with the limited or minimum outcome,” Gilang explains.

On the other hand, the new jobs that will arise are, including but not limited to, officer social media, administrative position, and freelance. To face the coming transformations, the Assistant for Human Capital Director at PT. Pertamina (Persero), shares some tips to the job seekers, such as maintaining self-confidence, become open-minded, evaluate personal will continuously, identifying soft-skill, capacity upgrading, establish networking, personal branding, and focus on objectives.

By implementing those tips, job seekerss will be able to differentiate their profile, thus avoiding similarity with other contesting job seekerss. Henceforth, job seekers can understand and examine their potential. Humas UNS
