UNS — A team of researchers from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held dissemination of research on “The Development of Educative Comic based on Local Wisdom in Non-Rice Food Security for Elementary School Teachers in Tawangmangu Subdistrict”. The study that involved five UNS students won funding from Non-Tax State Income (PNBP) UNS 2020 and 2021 through the penelitian unggulan scheme. The workshop to disseminate research findings was held offline under a strict health protocol and was attended by 15 participants, including supervisors, school inspectors, and representatives of elementary school teachers in Tawangmangu District

Dr. Sumarwati, M.Pd., faculty member of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education program who acted as team leader, explained that this dissemination aims to involve the teachers in conserving local wisdom on non-rice food resilience by integrating it into formal learning. “Thus, it does not go extinct,” Sumarwati stated to uns.ac.id team.

The research was conducted under a collaboration with the Education and Cultural Office (Disdikbud) of Karanganyar District. The Head of Education Coordinator for Tawangmangu Subdistrict, Heru Dwi Nugroho, M.Pd., encouraged the teachers to apply the comic to their local culture lesson. He also thanked FKIP UNS researchers for working together with the office in improving education quality in the region.

The dissemination that was held on Thursday (16/9/2021) in the Pondok Asri Hotel and Resto Meeting Room Tawangmangu was opened by Dr. Sukarno, who discussed the characteristics of thematic and integrated learning based on local culture. The second speaker, Dr. Sumarwati, discussed the content of the developed comic, followed by Dr. Atikah Anindyarini, who shared examples of learning that apply the educative comic. The four comic series created by the team are Narotama: Pembawa Pembaruan (Drivers of Innovation), Prabu Baka and Putut Tetuka, Petualang Naro and Tama: Ada Cerita dan Upacara Bersih Desa (story behind Bersih Desa), and Petualang Naro and Tama: Dapat Ilmu Baru (New Knowledge). The comics taught several materials, including folklore, traditional ceremonies, traditional food from corn, reog Pancot, gamelan thok prol, vegetable, and palawija farming systems on terraced land, intercropping systems, harvesting systems, traditional houses, and herbal medicine. All participants received four comics, and all 33 elementary schools in Tawangmangu got the comics for free.

After the material presentation, participants were trained to prepare thematic learning plans based on local culture using comics. Based on the training, the team concluded that all participants could prepare appropriate learning plans following the criteria. The pretest and post-test results also indicated knowledge improvements on Tawangmangu local wisdom and the strategy to integrate it into the learning process according to the themes and sub-themes in the materials. Sumarwati hoped that the teachers could integrate science and local wisdom into their learning process. Humas UNS
