UNS — A Student from the Fine Art Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, recently received an award in a poster competition at the international level. Alif Solihin, this last year student from FKIP UNS won the Southeast Asia Global Innovation Challenge (SEAGIC) organized by the American Chemical Society Malaysia Chapter in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) and Fundamental & Applied Sciences UTP. Alif succeeded in winning a bronze medal (3rd place) after competing with 207 participants from various countries in Southeast Asia Region.
He states that through visual language, the public poster he designed aims to be media to educate the public. “Stay at home is one of the effective means to stop the Covid-19 spread. The inspiration came from the conspiration theory on a time machine, then I establish a letter from a future surrounded by viruses. The letter contains a mathematical formula to defeat the Covid-19 spread. The formula is 2019 + 1 = positive Covid-19; 2019 + 1 + at home = negative Covid-19,” he explains on Tuesday (9/2/2021).
He adds that the poster needs 4 (four) days to complete. Two days for collecting and finalizing the concept, a day to complete a final sketch, and one day for the digitization process. “Initially I joined this competition to fill my spare time while waiting for the thesis correction from my supervisor. However, for this SEAGIC 2020, I was a little bit rushed in preparing the art submitted. Back then, the submission deadline for this competition and thesis revision is on the same day. Then I decided to prepare for the competition first because I saw a chance to become a champion in this competition,” Alif added.
Alif expressed that he was delighted with the result. Through this achievement, Alif hopes that his fellow UNS student can keep their achievement, even though all academic activities were moved to the online system. “I consider this pandemic as an opportunity with certain advantage, one of them, students can participate in international competition, online summer school, Harvard Model United Nation (MUN), and many other international events, without the hassle to prepare complicated administration documents such as SPPD, TOR, RAB, VISA, and many other. Even if the event was held virtually, but I think this can be a greater opportunity for us to go a step further,” he concludes. Humas UNS
