UNS — Karate Championship among international level students “Sebelas Maret Cup XII” was held on Friday (17/3/2023) to Sunday (19/3/2023). The agenda was in commemoration of the 47th Dies Natalis of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta. This year, the location for competition was at the Sports Building (GOR) of the Faculty of Sports (FKOR) UNS, at Jalan Menteri Supeno, Manahan, Banjarsari, Surakarta.
This event was organized by the Student Organization (Ormawa) of the Indonesian Karate-Do Institute (INKAI) UNS. This Karate Championship is one of the INKAI UNS Ormawa work programs. This championship was also a means of developing achievement and as a benchmark for assessing the development of karate techniques in the international arena, especially among students.
In a press conference on Thursday (16/3/2023) evening, at the UNS Student Center, the Chief Executive of Sebelas Maret Cup XII, Ied Fajar Heryan, explained that this event was the first to be held since 1999 and has become a routine agenda. “We have pioneered this championship as a student level championship. Initially, it was only for the Java-Bali level, then the following period penetrated the national level, the last 3 periods were international,” he said.
Regarding the number and origin of the participants, Fajar said, to uns.ac.id, that a total of 380 athletes had registered. “The total participants came from 2 countries, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam. A total of 45 contingents came from various universities in Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam,” he said.
Meanwhile, Head of Ormawa INKAI UNS, Fatih Raihan Ihwan, said that there were 2 categories of matches in this Sebelas Maret Cup XII. “There are Kata and Kumite. Kata competes for beauty, technical and athletic karate moves. Meanwhile, Kumite is a type of competition that brings together characters in battle,” he explained.
Both the Kata and Kumite categories are divided into male and female teams and individual male and female. The awards are divided into General Champion 1, 2 and 3; Individual Champion 1,2, and 3; Team Champion 1,2, and 3; as well as Men’s and Women’s Best of the Best Winners.
