UNS — The Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has succeeded in achieving the 724th global ranking and 12th National ranking in the Scimago Institution Rankings research and innovation section. The quality of research and innovation is crucial for a university. Research and innovation become one of the standards in the global competition index. Following this condition, UNS held a workshop entitled “Understanding The Scimago Institution Rankings” on Thursday (6/5/2021), inviting Dr. Isidro F. Aguillo as the Head of Cybermatrics Lab – Scimago Group, IPP. The Virtual Workshop was held through the Zoom Cloud Meeting and attended by the Rectory leaders, Deans from UNS Faculties, Directors, and Head of Bureau in UNS.
The Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, S.H., M.Hum., in his opening remark, expresses his gratitude to Dr. Aguillo. Further, he hopes that after the workshop, UNS can deliver strategies to improve the quality of research and innovation in the Scimago Institution Ranking. “I expect that after this workshop, the top management members can design some strategies to improve our ranking at the next assessment,” said Prof. Jamal.
Scimago Institutions Rankings is a rating institution that combines three different indicators, namely, research performance (50 percent in weight), innovation outcome (30 percent in weight), and social impact (20 percent in weight) that measured from the website visibility. Even further, the most important aspect in the Scimago Institutions Rankings is the number of published research articles in an educational institution. This aspect, however, should not only focused on the number of articles and ignoring the quality of the article published. Therefore, maintaining excellent publication quality.
According to Dr. Aguillo, there is a decline in Scopus-indexed international publication quantity done by the higher education institution. He considers several reasons for this decline, among others are the number of locally published articles that did not get published in an international journal. Secondly, numerous articles that prepared for national or local research and did not get developed into international research.
Dr. Aguillo also explains the score comparison between UNS and other universities, which does not differ significantly. With a better international publication, UNS can reach a better ranking. “According to the public data, obviously you have a very good performance section in the social cite work,” Dr. Aguillo explains.
“So I think if you improve your international competition, probably you can reach a better rank,” Dr. Aguillo suggested. Humas UNS
