UNS — The Government Decree (PP) No. 57 of 2021 concerning the National Standard of Education (SNP) on 31 March brings pros and cons to the community. The pros and cons are caused by the omission of Pancasila Education and Indonesian Language from the compulsory courses in higher education. Whereas the courses were regulated in law as compulsory courses in higher education.

The Center for Local Government Policy and Institutional Study (PPKDK), Institute for Research and Community Services (LPPM) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a webinar on “The Existence of PP No. 57 of 2021 in Strengthening Young Generation Character Education in Achieving Golden Generation of 2045” as a response. The webinar invited several speakers, including the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho as keynote speaker, Educational Expert, Prof. Dr. Sarwiji Suwandi, Legal Expert, Prof. Dr. Adi Sulistiyono, Historical Expert, Prof. Dr. Singgih Tri Sulistiyono, and PPKDK activist, Tuhana, S.H., M. Si.

In his opening remark and keynote speech, Prof. Jamal highly encourages a periodical review on the National Standard of Education regarding its suitability with the development in science, technology, and challenges in the industrial revolution 4.0. “Through substantial improvements, especially in terms of substance and regulation,” Prof. Jamal said.

However, Prof. Jamal regrets the omission of Pancasila Education and Indonesian Language in the Government Decree while both courses taught character education to university students. The deletion of both courses will affect future generation’s quality, and thus, this webinar is vital in discussing the current educational policy.

In line with Prof. Jamal, the Secretary of LPPM, Prof. Dr. Eng. Syamsul Hadi, also mentioned the importance of this webinar. “This webinar is necessary considering the greater challenges for Indonesia in the future. With a large number of young generation in those years, we need to maximize its full potential. Thus, in welcoming Indonesia’s 100 anniversary, this country will be more prosperous,” Prof. Syamsul Hadi said.

The webinar discussed the views on the new educational policy from education, legal, and historical point of view. Humas UNS
