UNS — Lately, the world has been stirred by the spread of Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCov) or known as the Coronavirus. The massive and rapid spread of Coronavirus to various parts of the world has caused people to be more protective of their environment. The symptoms of Coronavirus infection are similar to cough, runny nose, and fever.

Concerning the prevention of Coronavirus infection, as an education and research institution, UNS has developed the cultivation of red ginger. The cultivation of red ginger is carried out in Wonorejo Village, Jatiyoso Sub-district, Karanganyar District. Red ginger grows well in the altitude of 200—600 meters above sea level (masl). Other sources stated that red ginger still grows well until the altitude of 900 masl. Wonorejo has an altitude of 800 masl, which makes it suitable for the cultivation of red ginger.

Cultivation of red ginger is conducted by researchers from UNS, among others, Prof. Supriyono, Prof. Bambang Pujiasmanto, and Sri Nyoto Ida Nugroho, M.Eng. They assisted red ginger farmers. The cultivation of red ginger is conducted on 5 hectares area of hilly land and involved 70 farmers.

“This is the first-time red ginger is cultivated in the area. This cultivation is done under the partnership between Wana Agro and UNS. In the future, we will develop research on 1.5 hectares area of the UNS field for intensive development,” explained Ida Nugroho, Thursday (20/2/2020).

Ida Nugroho added that red ginger is different from ginger in general, the red outer shape is easy to be recognized. For taste, red ginger has a stronger taste compared to other types of ginger. Red ginger has high antioxidant which has a function as a deterrent of free radicals that can damage body cells. Besides that, red ginger also contains antiinflammation and antioxidants that can strengthen the immune system from viruses and bacteria.

The great benefits of red ginger on the immune system needs to be developed. Red ginger can be cultivated in yards using pot or outside pot; thus, it is very easy to be cultivated.

“Red ginger is a type of herbal medicine that can prevent virus infection. The cultivation of red ginger will benefit and generate income for farmers and the community because they can get additional income,” stated Ida Nugroho. Humas UNS/Dwi
