UNS — Disaster Study Center (PSB) Institute of Research and Community Service (LPPM) Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta held the International Conference on Disaster Management and Climate Change (ICoDMC) 2021. Selecting “Environmental Degradation and Disaster Management” as a theme, this event was held through the Zoom Cloud Meeting and was attended by 300 participants from Indonesia and abroad.
ICoDMC 2021 was held on Saturday (4/9/2021) and opened by Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs UNS, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Sajidan, M.Si. this event is in line with UNS vision and missions that are committed to contributing to achieving sustainable development at the national and international level. Prof. Sajidan mentioned that the conference’s theme plays a vital role and sure that participant’s contribution will create initiative of disaster risk management and environmental management.
“As we know, reducing disaster and environmental risk are global initiatives in the last few decades. However, strategy to mitigate disaster potential and environmental damage more efficiently is needed,” Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Sajidan, M.Si., said.
In her opening remark, the Chief of PSB UNS, Prof. Dr. Chatarina Muryani, M.Si., explained the vital role of research publications on environmental damage and disaster studies in managing the environment and disaster risks.
“The environmental and disaster experts were gathering and participated in this seminar as a means to communicate findings and new ideas, reveal and disseminate related scientific development, and discuss it with the scientist in environmental, disaster, and other supporting knowledge at the national and international level,” Prof. Dr. Chatarina Muryani, M.Si., explained.
Prof. Chatarina also explained that all papers submitted to ICoDMC 2021 would be published in the IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, a Scopus indexed proceeding. The conference has two sessions of material presentations.
Dr. Raditya Jati, S.Si., M.Si, the Deputy of System and Strategy National Board of Disaster Mitigation (BNPB) Indonesia, attended the event as a keynote speaker on “Disaster Management in Indonesia” with Dr. Yasin Yusup, S.Si., M.Si., acted as a moderator. The speakers in ICoDMC 2021 first session are Prof. J.C. Gaillard from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, who delivered a speech on “The epistemological non-sense of disaster studies”. The second speaker in this session is Prof. Josaphat Tetuko Sri Sumantyo from Chiba University, Japan, who delivered material on “GIS For Disaster Management”. Ahmad Marzuki, S.Si., Ph.D., acted as a moderator in this session.
In the second session, Assoc Prof. Mohd Hairy Ibrahim from Sultan Idris Education University, Malaysia, delivered a speech on “Climate Change and Disaster Challenges and SDGs Approach For Mitigation”. Two presenters from PSB UNS also delivered the material in this session, Dr. Rita Noviani, M.Sc, on “Capacity Building For Institutions and Communities in Disaster Management” and Dr. (Cand) Sorja Koesuma, S.Si., M.Si “The Challenge of Flood Early Warning System in Central Java Indonesia”.
