UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta officially inaugurated four new professors. The inauguration took place at the Open Session of the UNS Academic Senate, Tuesday (4/7/2023). The four professors are Prof. Dr. Mohammad Jamin, S.H., M.Hum., Prof. Dr. Sumarwati, M.Pd., Prof. Dr. Niken Silmi Surjandari, S.T., M.T., and Prof. Dr. Sarwono, M.Sn. The inauguration of UNS professors took place in the G.P.H. Haryo Mataram Auditorium Building.

The four new UNS professors were confirmed for their contributions in various fields of science. Prof. Dr. Mohammad Jamin, S.H., M.Hum., is the 10th professor at the Faculty of Law (FH) and the 264th professor at UNS. He was inaugurated as a Professor in the Field of Social Law with an inauguration speech entitled “Pengembanan Hukum Prismatik Sebagai Basis Mewujudkan Adagium Hukum untuk Manusia Bukan Manusia untuk Hukum” (Undertaking of Prismatic Law as a Basis for Realizing the Adagium of Law for Humans Not Humans for Law).

Prof. Dr. Sumarwati, M.Pd., is the 68th professor at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) and the 265th professor at UNS. She was inaugurated as a Professor in the Field of Applied Linguistics with an inauguration speech entitled “Optimalisasi Peran Bahasa dalam Pendidikan Literasi Matematika Siswa Sekolah Dasar” (Optimizing the Role of Language in Mathematics Literacy Education for Elementary School Students).

Prof. Dr. Niken Silmi Surjandari, S.T., M.T., is the 22nd professor at the Faculty of Engineering (FT) and the 266th UNS. She was inaugurated as a Professor in the Field of Sustainable Geotechnical Science with an inauguration speech entitled “Peran Perbaikan Tanah (Soil Improvement) dalam Pembangunan dan Pemeliharaan Infrastruktur Sipil “ (The Role of Soil Improvement in the Development and Maintenance of Civil Infrastructure).

Prof. Dr. Sarwono, M.Sn., is the 5th professor at FSRD and the 267th UNS. He was inaugurated as a Professor in the Field of Traditional Textile Science with an inauguration speech entitled “Pemanfaatan Bahan Alami untuk Zat Warna dalam Pengembangan Sustainable Design Tekstil “ (Utilization of Natural Materials for Dyes in the Development of Sustainable Textile Designs).

The Head of the UNS Council of Professors (DP), Prof. Drs. Suranto, M.Sc., Ph.D., warmly welcomed the four new UNS professors. He is also proud to see the increasing number of lecturers who have won the highest functional positions as professors. This is because achieving the title of professor is not an easy struggle.

“I am proud and very happy with the four professors who were inaugurated. Not only academically, but they are really forged and prepared mentally, academically and psychologically,” Prof. Suranto said.

In line with this, the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, S.H., M.Hum., said that giving the PTNBH mandate to UNS was the right decision. The target of fulfilling 10% of the number of professors as one of the mandates and performance contracts that must be realized by UNS as PTNBH is one step closer to being fulfilled.

UNS is increasingly optimistic about continuously increasing the research productivity and scientific publications of its lecturers, both at the national and international levels. Prof. Jamal reminded us that an academic who is productive in producing up-to-date works is a role model in the world of higher education and therefore deserves the title of professor.

Prof. Jamal emphasized that the existence of an academic is measured by the quality of thoughts and ideas that are widely disseminated. The wealth of publications produced by lecturers will ultimately elevate the degree and at the same time increase the world’s top university ranking index.

“Currently, the existence of an academic is no longer limited by space and time. The existence of Professors through research and innovations produced through their scientific publications can be read, cited, and widely used very easily by anyone,” Prof. Jamal said.

Finally, Prof. Jamal advised that the opportunity to synergize and collaborate with professors with global networks would be more open. With their qualified scientific capacity and large social role in society, the four UNS Professors who have just been inaugurated are believed to be able to dedicate their knowledge and stand side by side with their communities on the global stage.

“Hopefully the title of professor that has been carried is a manifestation of their totality in serving and making a major meaningful contribution to the benefit of society and the progress of the nation and state of Indonesia,” he concluded. *Humas UNS*
