UNS – Students from the Civil Engineering Study Program at the Faculty of Engineering (FT) of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta won a prestigious award at the Civil National Expo (CNE) held at Tarumanagara University, West Jakarta. The final competition took place on May 30-31, 2024.

The Semar Shankara Team, comprising three Civil Engineering students—Alan Timothy Lie Hans Santoso, Ahmad Miftahul Adnan, and Avia Anindita Rahma—was the sole representative from the Civil Engineering Program in the transportation analysis competition. CNE is a competition focusing on various analyses, with this year’s winning analysis from the Semar Shankara Team being in the field of transportation. The theme of this year’s competition was “Innovative Infrastructure Solutions to Reduce Excessive Pollution.” The Semar Shankara Team linked transportation systems with logistics services. The competition ran from March to April 2024 for the first and second rounds, with the finals held on May 30-31, 2024.

“Our team assessed that one of the causes of pollution problems is the improper routing of freight transportation, leading to travel delays,” Alan said, as quoted from uns.ac.id, Monday (10/6/2024).

The Semar Shankara Team conducted their case study in the city of Surakarta, which already has a City Entry Permit Dispensation System (SIDJAKA) to regulate freight movement. However, there is currently no monitoring system to ensure vehicles follow the correct routes. To address this, the Semar Shankara Team developed an innovative monitoring system called the Route Identification Monitoring System (RIMS) to oversee the movement of freight vehicles in Surakarta. They implemented Internet of Things (IoT) technology using RFID sensors. Their paper on this innovation is titled “Application of Internet of Things Using RFID Sensors to Monitor Freight Truck Routes in Surakarta as an Effort to Reduce Excessive Pollution”.

The Semar Shankara Team expressed their impression and challenge in participating in this competition, especially since the Civil Engineering Program at UNS FT had not participated in transportation competitions for a long time. They were also proud to compete against other renowned universities such as the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) as finalists.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to Ir. Budi Yulianto S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., for his guidance, which helped us win this championship,” Alan concluded.
