UNS – The spread of information in social media demands its user to own deep understanding to all the impacts it could create. Therefore, Wikilingua discussion is held under the theme of social media to provide understanding in using social media for active users especially college students. This discussion, which was also held last year, is held in Gedung 1 Faculty of Cultural Sciences Universitas Sebelas Maret (FIB UNS) on Thursday (19/1/2017).
This discussion presented two speakers, Monika Sri Yuliarti, S.Sos., M.Si, who delivered the importance of empathy in social media, and Agus Dwi Priyanto, S.S., MCALL who delivered the way to overcome hoax news in the internet.

“On the exposure of mass communication, internet has an impact to media expansion. Meanwhile on the personal side, internet has an impact to the psychological side of the communicators and communicants, which is an element of communication process,” Monika explained.
Furthermore, Monika, who is a Communication Science lecturer of UNS, stated that empathy is needed to prevent obtrusive or harmful impacts towards other social media users. Therefore, social media literacy, or the capability to use social media is important to be understood by its users.
Agus Dwi Priyanto delivered that information literacy is also important to be understood by the users before they spread hoax news, or news with uncertain truth. This English Literature lecturer closed the discussion by inviting social media users to be more critical in analyzing the truth of the information in order to minimize the spread of fake news.
