This event featured “Engaging the spirit of Youth towards SDG’s 2030” as the topic of this competition. According to Noverizko, this topic was interesting since it encouraged the youth to think critically dealing with Sustainable Development Goals 2030 in Indonesia. United Development Program (UNDP) states that there are 17 points of SDG. Thus, Noverizko and friends had to prepare the material before leaving to North Sulawesi.

“There are 28 released motions in this competition. We split the tasks to everyone to find out the definitions, data, and arguments.  We practiced the debate only twice since Ikhsanul and Asfarah only had a few time,” said Noverizko.

Ikhsanul also said that the topic is interesting especially for the one who keen on reading. As the students of public administration science, we can implement what we’ve gotten in the class.

The Remarkable Experience during Competition

Joining national debate competition became such a kind of remarkable experience for those three students. They met new friends and got many experiences in how the judges gave them the clear assessment and good advices.  Furthermore, they also found new culture from other participants coming from all region of Indonesia.

“The interesting experience is meeting with the judges who have good credibility. I learn a lot since the judges kindly explain dealing with the issue and the things that I do not understand yet. Moreover, the contestants also do not consider the other contestant as their competitor. We share experiences and stories a lot,” said Asfarah.

The Best Arguments in Debate

Noverizko as the best speaker said that the thing that he explained in debate was ‘landfill tax’. According to him, landfill tax could be used as a policy to overcome waste problem in Indonesia.

“Landfill tax is a tax for waste in landfills. We propose landfill tax as a solution that can be implemented in Indonesia due to the high amount of waste. We think that the one that produce waste has to pay tax. It is also educating people not to throw garbage carelessly,” said Noverizko. humas-red.uns.ac.id/Ref/Dty
