UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has secured the 8th position on the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) 2024 Top Collaborator list. This national achievement is based on joint publications produced during the 2021–2024 period. UNS contributed 263 scholarly outputs, primarily focusing on engineering and environmental science research.

The announcement was officially made by BRIN and was met with enthusiasm by the UNS academic community. The Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., expressed his appreciation for this accomplishment, emphasizing the university’s commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and collaborative research.

“We are proud of this achievement. Being included in BRIN’s Top Collaborator list is tangible proof of UNS’s dedication to strengthening research collaborations both nationally and internationally. I extend my gratitude to all lecturers, researchers, and students who contributed to these publications,” Prof. Hartono stated to uns.ac.id on Monday (13/1/2025).

He also highlighted the importance of research collaboration in addressing societal needs through knowledge development.

“Collaboration is not just about numbers but about how research outcomes can positively impact society. We hope this accomplishment motivates us to continue improving the quality of research and publications in the future,” he added.

In the rankings released by BRIN, UNS outperformed several other universities. Universitas Airlangga (Unair) ranked 10th with 255 scholarly outputs, while Universitas Brawijaya (UB) ranked 11th with 246 outputs. UNS’s achievement of the 8th rank underscores the university’s competitiveness within an increasingly dynamic research ecosystem.

This milestone further solidifies UNS’s commitment to fostering interdisciplinary and institutional research collaborations. Moving forward, UNS aims to expand its contributions to impactful research on national and global scales. This achievement is expected to inspire the entire UNS academic community to continue innovating and advancing scientific knowledge for the benefit of society.

UNS — Bright achievement was again accomplished by the students of Faculty of Medical Science (FK) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta. On Saturday (12/2/2022), three students from the Medicine Education Program won two places and a Favorite Poster in the National Poster Competition. The team was consisted of Tyasno Koeshermanto, Vina Sari Nugrahaning Widi, and Tamara Maulidya.

The competition titled World Cancer Day Competition (WCDC) 2022 was held by Komunitas Mahasiswa Peduli Kanker (Kompak) FK Universitas Udayana (Unud). The poster they submitted contains education on lung cancer prevention. The team wanted to improve community awareness of lung cancer through their poster. “Thus, the poster also included information on the symptoms and risk factors (vulnerable groups) that (people) need to be aware of,” Tyasno explained on Monday (14/2/2022).

Further, Tyasno explained that the risk factors of lung cancer are, among others, over 40 years old, active smoker, a record of lung disease, exposure to carcinogenic materials, and family history of cancer. The team stated that they chose to create the poster because Indonesia was ranked 1st in new lung cancer incidence in men population in 2020.

“Even the mortality rate of lung cancer in Indonesia is higher than Asian and global average. Lung cancer could be detected after entering stadium 3 or 4, marked with observable symptoms. Stadium 1 and 2 usually showed no symptoms besides coughing, and people often underestimate cough,” the team added.

Therefore, the team wanted to participate in the preventive measures in reducing lung cancer cases, especially for people with risk factors.

The team stated that they were delighted when knowing that they won 2nd place and the Favorite Poster on Saturday (12/2/2022) announcement. The team admitted that they did not expect to win over 59 participants in the competition. They hoped that they could develop their ideas into a poster that could benefit the community further. The team also hoped that their poster could help press the number of lung cancer cases as the number 1 killer among other types of cancers. Humas UNS

UNS — Young and excellent are two words reflected from Zalfaa Azalia Pursita, a student of Special Education Program (Pkh) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, who is also Duta Bahasa Jawa Tengah 2021 (Central Java Literary Ambassador 2021) who represented her province in Pemilihan Duta Bahasa Nasional 2021 (National Literary Ambassador Selection 2021) on Thursday – Tuesday (14-19/10/2021).

Zalfaa’s interest in literature grew from a young age that during her university days, the 7th-semester students who have a myriad of achievements started an online library named Sanbukis and initiated a free tutoring community; Rumah Mentari. On Tuesday (26/10/2021), Zalfaa shared her journey in the literature fields with the uns.ac.id team.

Love for Reading

Little Zalfaa was introduced to books by her parents, starting from picture books, comics, folktales to the old-famous-children magazine-Bobo. Now, in a month, she could finish three books, fiction or non-fiction. She thinks that reading brings many positive impacts for her.

“I feel that reading is fun; it could fill our free time and could train our imagination,” she said.

Due to her high interest in reading, Zalfaa often visited her school library and was even nominated as a student who visited the library most often in her Junior High School (SMP). Zalfaa also likes various book genres, from self-development, romance, adventure, and religious books.

Favorite Books and Writers

The Literary Ambassador’s favorite writers are Alvi Syahrin and Tere Liye because she thinks both writers always promote positive values in their books that could empower someone to improve their quality of life. One of her favorite books is Jika Kita Tak Pernah Jadi Apa-Apa (If We Never Become Anything) by Alvi Syahrin, which mentioned that one’s does not need to be great before being useful for others.

“We do not need to be green or fruity trees before being useful. We cannot suddenly become a great person and useful for people without starting from the small things. I feel that Alvi successfully makes readers who lose their hope towards life and feel useless to be a more meaningful personality in a modest way,” Zalfaa said.

Sanbukis and Rumah Mentari

In her lifetime, Zalfaa had completed many books which when she cleaned them at the end of 2020, she remembered all the positive lessons she learned and her wish that others could learn the same things. There were 70 books in her possession that were in good condition, and they encouraged her to open an online library named Sanbukis. The books were uploaded to Sanbukis’ Instagram account, and people who are interested in borrowing those books could make an appointment.

“Alhamdulillah, it garnered positive responses. My friends are borrowing the books, and even a friend who was just graduated from university and worked in Batam, when they did not have any idea what to do with the 30 books, they deposited their books to Sanbukis,” Zalfaa said.

The borrowing process in Sanbukis is free, and the borrower only needs to fill a direct message form on Instagram, then the book is delivered through a direct meet with the borrower. The borrower has one month period that could be extended. There are two programs offered by Sanbukis. Give Happiness is for people to donate their books to be lent in Sanbukis. “Second, Sharing Happiness, for people who want to deposit their books to be lent in Sanbukis,” Zalfaa added.

Zalfaa’s other program, Rumah Mentari, runs in the educational field and provides free tutoring for Elementary School (SD) students in the village. The program is run by Zalfaa and her friend weekly and is still effective to this day.

The Beginning of Duta Bahasa

The student from Boyolali stated that one of her reasons to participate in the competition was to find friends who share her vision and mission in the literature world so that she could collaborate in many activities. Her objective is achieved because currently, Zalfaa and Shella (3rd place winner in Central Java Literary Ambassador) have an Instagram live program that discusses books they just completed. “We want to share the goodness from the books we read. I also want to channel my literature hobby, (because) I do not have a means, so when I became the ambassador, (I) could be useful for more people because of the wider networks,” Zalfaa stated.

This program combines her love for reading and writing, Sauna Citra: Sahabat untuk Pecinta Literasi (Fellows for Literature Lovers). Although she does not study literature, Zalfaa is not disheartened and wants to learn more to improve her language skills. Her learning outcomes were proved through an excellent level in Uji Kemahiran Berbahasa Indonesia (UKBI) (Indonesian Language Proficiency Test).

Impression as Duta Bahasa Jawa Tengah

When asked about the impression she has as ambassador, Zalfaa mentioned that she feels happy and honored to be trusted as a Central Java representative at the national level. “But behind that, there is a long and tiring process, like public speaking training, preparing Gim Sima, not to mention when (competing) in pairs, need adaptation, adjusting with one another to build chemistry,” Zalfaa said.

Zalfaa also did not expect to win 1st place in the competition because during the Best 3 from 10 finalists, she was mentioned last. When two names were announced, she did not expect that the last person would be her.

Achievements

Zalfaa has a myriad of achievements, including the 1st winner in the Indonesian Language Debate Competition for FKIP Students in Indonesia 2021, Best Speaker in 4 KDBI FKIP in Indonesia 2021, Student Exchange ICT Kemendikbudristek Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia 2021, Top 5 Grab Tempo Editor’s Chair by Tempo Institute 2021, and 1st Runner-Up Excellent Student Selection FKIP UNS 2021.

Areas of Improvement

Following her win at the provincial level, Zalfaa received various assistance to improve various aspects of her skills. Zalfaa mentioned that she learned three lessons from the competition. First, she received assistance from Ikadubas and Language Office in preparation for the national round. “From that, I wanted to return their kindness by doing good for other people,” Zalfaa said.

The second lesson she learned was she wants to be consistent in anything in life. She believes that constant 1% improvement is better than one time 50% improvement without follow-up. Nothing is instant; everything needs to be prepared, planned, and enjoyed the process. Her last lesson is that winning is not the end of the journey. Zalfaa recalled the time when she did not feel fulfilled with her achievements.

“Because I was far from God. So, no matter where we are, in whatever peak of success, we should always involve God in our every action,” she said.

Messages and Wishes

Concluding the interview with the uns.ac.id team, Zalfaa shared her messages and wishes. She hoped that she could minimize her expectation and be useful through small things. “Whatever (I) face, (I) need to enjoy, do it to my best of ability, there will be good things waiting afterward as long as we believe in the paths prepared by God,” Zalfaa stated. Humas UNS

So that they could achieve their objective, target, and plan formulated beforehand,” Prof. Jamal explained on Wednesday (14/10/2021).

There are eight IKU as the fundamental of university transformation: (1) Graduates secured appropriate jobs, (2) Students received off-campus experiences, (3) Faculty members have off-campus activities, (4) Professional teaching on the campus, (5) Research findings used by the community or internationally recognized, (6) Study programs collaborate with world-class partners, (7) Collaborative and participative class, and (8) International-standard study program.

“Alhamdulillah for this achievement; thank you for the prayers, supports, and hard works from all campus elements. Hopefully, in the future, UNS could improve its achievement points, growth points, and percentage,” Prof. Jamal added.

In the decision letter dated 27 September 2021, the Implementing Officer of Director General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology Kemendikbud Ristek RI, Prof. Nizam, stated that the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology held the IKU PTN assessment 2020/2021 to measure university’s performance in achieving adaptive university with better graduates.

“The 2020/2021 PTN IKU achievement award is in the form of incentives for universities according to their category,” Prof. Nizam stated. Humas UNS

UNS — A happy news came from History Education Program student Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Fiska Amanda Mulia, who won the prize for 2nd place and favorite poster in Akmapesa Economic Competition (Aection) 3.0 Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) as one of the three competitions in the annual event.

Fiska, her nickname, submitted a poster titled “The Importance of Entrepreneurship Spirit for Millennials through the Creation of Creative Product” that represents Aection 3.0 theme Creative Generation in Economic Development for Bright Indonesia. Fiska said that she is delighted with these achievements because she could share her thought on the entrepreneurship sector that she focuses on.

“Alhamdulillah, I am happy because (I) could share my ideas and hopes in a poster. It was a coincidence that the theme is in line with my background as an entrepreneur,” Fiska said to uns.ac.id team on Wednesday (13/10/2021).

The student from Sragen District, Central Java, started her brownies production in 2017 that she branded as Bronislur. Her business is a success story that generated significant income amid the Covid-19 pandemic and won funding from the Entrepreneurial Student Program of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemdikbudristek). Her experiences as an entrepreneur moved her to create the poster and shared information, tips, and tricks of working as an entrepreneur in the poster. Through her work, Fiska also invited millennials to be entrepreneurs by utilizing their social media. She hoped that her poster could be encouraged to be an entrepreneur like her.

“I hope this poster could increase millennials’ spirits to contribute to the Indonesia development by becoming a young entrepreneur. So, are we ready to be a millennial who takes part in accelerating Indonesian economic growth?” she said.

First Win

This achievement is Fiska’s first time winning a poster competition after participating in many similar competitions. With her relentless efforts and tenacity, Fiska finally won her recent poster competition. “This is the first time I won a poster competition this year after failed ten times. I am not art major student, so creating a poster is just a fad, and I often lose in the poster competition. Alhamdulillah, the first time I won two categories at the same time, 2nd place and favorite poster,” she said.

Although this is her first winning poster competition, Fiska has won many other competitions such as 1st place in National MSMEs Competition held by Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB), 2nd place in National MSMEs Digital Based Business Innovation held by Institut Teknologi Kalimantan, 2nd place in the National Infographics Competition held by Universitas Islam Negeri Yogyakarta, 2nd place in the National Business Plan Competition held by UNS, and 2nd place in the National Digital Innovation Competition held by UNS Fintech Center. Humas UNS

UNS — Happy feeling shroud the basketball team of Faculty of Sports (FKOR) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta. The team has just carved an achievement in the Pekan Prestasi Mahasiswa Nasional (PANTASI) 2021 (National Student Achievement Week) held by the Faculty of Sports Science (FIK) Universitas Negeri Semarang (Unnes). UNS basketball team won 1st place in women three players game and 2nd place in the men three players game which both held online.

The students who participated in the team were Jisinta Pradita Ramadhani, Siska Lestiani, Sheila Ayuningtyas, and Nanda Amalia in the women team, and Aldo Saputra, Ali Prakoso, and David Kurniawan in the men team. They are Physical Education, Health and Recreation Program (Penjaskesrek) students, and they received supervision from Ahmad Septiandika Adirahma, M.Or., for the men’s team and Baskoro Nugroho Putro, M.Pd., for the women’s team.

Baskoro stated that he is proud of this achievement because his students could carve some achievements amid the pandemic. He is also grateful for the support provided by the faculty for the team.

“My feeling and other faculty members, and the students, of course, we are proud because we could achieve something amid the pandemic and in a competition recognized by Ditjen Belmawa. We are also happy because the faculty always supports what we do,” Baskoro stated to the uns.ac.id team on Friday (30/7/2021), one day after the announcement.

To the uns.ac.id, Baskoro also stated that in participating in the competition, the team experienced various challenges because of the Community Activity Control Order (PPKM) policy. They need to convince the Deans to allow them to use the court for training. All training was conducted under health protocol, without physical contact, with a minimum number of people, and for a limited period. Their efforts did not get wasted and brought fresh news for UNS for their achievements.

In the future, Baskoro hopes that there is a basketball competition that could be held offline. “My wish, truthfully, is for an offline basketball competition. Because basically, basketball is two teams playing in the court, showing their skills, until we determined which one wins,” he hoped. However, Baskoro is aware that under the current condition, there is a probability that the government will continue the activity limitation order, and many activities will stay online. “(Under that condition) I hope there is more competition like this. Thus, it could relieve the longing for competing, and as a means to achieved something during the pandemic,” he added. Humas UNS
