UNS — An alumnus from the Architectural Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering (FT), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Naya Marsatyasti, S.T., M.Eng., shared her experience working as an architect in Japan, in the Virtual Talk Series With Japan Alumni: Various Experiences as Architects in Japan. The event was conducted as a collaboration between the Center for Japanese Studies (PSJ), Institute of Research and Community Service (LPPM) UNS, UNS URDC Laboratory – Architecture Engineering Study Program, Architecture Engineering Student Association (HMA) UNS, and the Indonesian Architecture Association (IAI) Surakarta.

The main invited speaker, Naya, who delivered material on Preparing to Work as an Architect in Japan, states that to be an architect in Japan requires good preparation. “First, prepare your Curriculum Vitae (CV) according to the designated format provided by the company and your work portfolio that focuses on design thinking. Second, mastering a foreign language, in this case, a minimum of Japanese N3/N2 proficiency and English is suitable. Third, recognize the type of company, whether it is a corporate, atelier/studio type, or outsourced company. Fourth, definitely go job hunting, and don’t forget to submit your CV and portfolio to the desired company,” said Naya, Saturday (25/6/2022).

Naya added that the workflow for an architect in Japan is not much different from that in Indonesia. Starting from design drawing, structural drawing, and Mechanical Electrical Plumbing (MEP) drawing; Examination of construction cost; Environmental impact assessment; Meeting with all parties; and Construction drawing. In addition, the certification of Japanese architects is divided into 3 (three) sections, wooden architects, second-class architects, and first-class architects.

“Before construction, we also had a praying ritual for the construction project to run safely and smoothly. As for the work culture itself, a working day usually starts with a daily morning meeting to report on the progress of the ongoing project and any work that will be done today, as well as any assignment or completed job the day before. It is also not uncommon for us to work beyond normal working hours. While for daily routines, we usually engage in design studies exploration, preparing market studies, and team meetings. Every project is the outcome of a team effort because there is a culture of helping other teams’ projects. This work culture is based on my experience in the atelier company type or architect studio in Japan,” explained Naya.

According to Naya, when she wanted to become an architect in Japan, she emphasized the need to prepare a strong mental state. Although Japanese people are famous for their hospitality and courtesy, however, since it is a different country, there must be cultural differences. An aspect that Naya also faces. She encourages that it is important to maintain communication with Indonesian people residing in Japan when working as an architect in Japan. “The opportunity to work as an architect in Japan, which is full of references to interesting buildings architecture and opportunities to be closer to world-class Japanese architects, is a joy. However, it does not make it necessarily easy to live with. A healthy mentality and sufficient Japanese comprehension become crucial skills to survive,” Naya concluded. Humas UNS

UNS — Students of the Faculty of Engineering (FT), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) participated in the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Medeka (MBKM) Project in Joho Village, Pracimantoro District, Wonogiri Regency. The team consisted of students from the Architectural Engineering and Civil Engineering Study Program (Prodi). In this activity, they worked on the creation of a master plan for the village area. Reporting from the ft.uns.ac.id webpage, this project began in September 2021. The site survey was the initial activity undertaken. While in December 2021, the team will start the design phase. The first master plan design was completed and has been presented to the Joho Village resident. This design stage is mainly handled by the students from the Architectural Engineering Study Program. “Our project in the village is started with the village residents’ request for an establishment plan to transform the field into a stadium, which also includes a reservoir. Around this reservoir, there is empty land, and we were requested to plan a multi-purpose building and transform the garden landscape,” said Adam Maulana, one of the Architecture students.

Yuan Efano Sofyan, Adam’s colleague, also pointed out that the outcome of this project will be the village masterplan design. The design provides the public facilities needed by the village residents.

After the presentation held in February 2022, the project was continued by the students of the Civil Engineering Study Program. Their role involves the calculation of the building structures. This student collaboration, according to Yuan, is very helpful in calculating the stadium structure and the multi-purpose buildings that were previously designed by the Architectural students. “Previously, there was an idea to collaborate the Architectural with Civil Engineering students. That is to measure the stadium structure and the multi-purpose buildings we designed. Hence, we can know whether the design can be implemented or not. That’s how it goes,” Yuan explained.

There are numerous expectations for this MBKM project. The design that has been made is expected to be useful for many parties. UNS students can also gain hands-on experience to apply their knowledge. The students reveal that they are happy if the designs that have been made can be realized in the future.

In addition, according to Adam, scientific collaborations can also be applied to other projects. Indeed, it must be applied in an effective and efficient way in order to get quality results.

“This MBKM program is highly helpful. The problem is that Architectural engineering needs more experience, such as a presentation in front of lecturers is different from a presentation made in front of public agencies. It feels very different. So there is the experience (through this project),” Yuan said. Humas UNS

UNS — Proud achievement was again brought home by Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta students after winning the Technology-based Agrotourism Grand Design Competition held by Commission B of House of Representatives (DPRD) Central Java. These students are Khanif Irsyad Fahmi from Agricultural Extension & Communication Program (PKP), Mohammad Rheza Hendriwinata from Agribusiness Program, Rifqi Muhammad Rizqullah from Architectural Engineering Program, Zahrotussa’adah from Architectural Engineering Program, Zharfa Hafizhotul Qonita from Architectural Engineering Program, and Umar Abdul Karim from Civil Engineering Program.

The team won over their competitors and brought the 1st place prize home. Khanif, the team leader, explained that they proposed the Joglo Kahuripan agrotourism concept. Their proposal is an agrotourism concept based on agricultural education that offers a ‘back to nature’ concept for the visitors through its integrated agriculture.

“Melon, fish, and maggot cultivation as the representative of life. We combined (the concept) with the local wisdom of Central Java culture, which is threatened with extinction,” Khanif explained to the uns.ac.id team on Friday (4/2/2021).

Khanif and the team consider the presence of agrotourism in the community is greatly needed to provide comprehension on the importance of the agricultural sector in the community while maintaining the high community interests toward the tourism sector. In Joglo Kahuripan, the offered agrotourism concept that introduces the plant cultivation process from the seedlings to harvesting.

Regarding the name of Joglo Kahuripan, Khanif explained that the name was selected because it could represent the agrotourism concept that the proposed. Joglo is the name of Central Java traditional house, while “kahuripan” means life. Thus, together the name means the center of life. Khanif stated in the interview that the team was delighted with their achievement.

“(We are) delighted because I have not participated in a competition for a long time. I could also collaborate with the fellows from engineering faculty,” Khanif explained.

To achieve their win, the group was challenged to combine the ideas from students from different disciplines and visualize their final idea. At the end of the interview, Khanif shared the importance of collaboration. “We do not need to be a specialist to be beneficial in a certain field. We could collaborate to create benefits. Collaboration is what we need,” Khanif stated. Humas UNS
