Challenging Missions in IRC 2025

The competition adopted the theme “The Guardians of Water,” challenging teams to test their robotic boats in various aquatic scenarios. Six main missions assessed the boats’ navigation accuracy, speed, and technological efficiency. They were:

1. Navigation Channel
2. Mapping Migration Pattern
3. Treacherous Water
4. Race Against Pollution
5. Rescue Deliveries
6. Return to Home

The judges evaluated each team based on mission execution, technological innovation, competitive strategy, and boat design efficiency.

Bengawan UV’s Journey to the Finals

The competition began with a team orientation on the first day, followed by a safety inspection on the second day. Bengawan UV passed all safety standards and immediately advanced to the first two missions. Those were the Navigation Channel and Mapping Migration Pattern.

By the third day, the team strengthened its position by completing three additional missions. There were Speed Challenge, Docking, and Rescue Deliveries. These successes secured their place in the semifinals, where competition intensified as teams faced increasingly complex challenges.

On the fifth and sixth days, the team encountered fierce competitors in the semifinals. However, Bengawan UV’s well-planned strategies and precise execution allowed them to advance to the final round. The final stage presented major obstacles. It includes:

• A cracked hull at the boat’s rear
• A malfunctioning controller for ball delivery
• Disruptions in the main step-down propulsion system

Despite these setbacks, Bengawan UV demonstrated exceptional teamwork and quick problem-solving. These strengths enabled them to overcome challenges and secure second place in the global Autonomy Challenge category.

A Milestone Achievement for Bengawan UV

Securing second place in this prestigious international competition marks a significant milestone for Bengawan UV and UNS. This achievement demonstrates the university’s ability to compete with the world’s leading maritime innovators.

“This victory is one of our highest achievements. It represents our finest results, and with this accomplishment, we hope to continue breaking new boundaries,” Al Faruq said. He is the General Manager of Bengawan UV 2025 and a Mechanical Engineering student from the 2022 batch. He stated as quoted from ft.uns.ac.id on Tuesday (18/3/2025).

The team successfully met its objectives by completing all missions. This success highlights their strategies, research, and innovation, proving their effectiveness in global competitions. Motivated by this achievement, Bengawan UV aims to develop even more advanced autonomous robotic boats in the coming years. They commit to enhancing Indonesia’s reputation in maritime technology on the global stage.

This achievement aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

• SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – Encouraging advancements in robotic technology for sustainable infrastructure.
• SDG 14: Life Below Water – Promoting marine conservation and efficient oceanic resource management through robotic boat technology.

Bengawan UV remains dedicated to pushing the boundaries of autonomous maritime technology through continuous innovation. At the same time, the team proudly represents Indonesia on the global stage.

Four teams were introduced to the UNS academic community during the event. The first team, Akasha Seva BUV, led by Wahyu Heriyanto, a student from the Electrical Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering (FT) UNS, will compete in the Technology Development division. Their UAV, Akasha Seva, secured second place in the regional competition.

The second team, Akasha Bhatara BUV, led by Ahmad Tauhid Irfansyah, a student from the Physics Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UNS, will compete in the Vertical Take-Off Landing (VTOL) division.

The third team, Bamantara BUV, led by Ryan Aditya Nandana from the Electrical Engineering Department, FT UNS, will compete in the Fixed Wing division. Their UAV, Bamantara, also won second place in the regional selection.

The fourth team, Narash BUV, led by Irfan Nahar Hidayat, also from the Electrical Engineering Department, will compete in the Racing Plane division. Their UAV, Ares, took first place in the regional competition.

The regional KRTI 2024 selection, in which the Bengawan UV teams participated, was organized by the Indonesian Talent Development Center (BPTI) under the National Achievement Center (Puspresnas) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek). Based on the regional results, BPTI announced the regional winners and finalists for KRTI 2024.

UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, M.Si., expressed his appreciation for the team’s efforts. He stated his pride in the Bengawan UV Team’s consistent national and international achievements, and pledged full support in providing the necessary resources to ensure success in the upcoming competition.

“We fully support the team’s participation in KRTI 2024 to achieve the best results,” Prof. Hartono said.

General Manager of Bengawan UV Team UNS, Daffa Putra Islami, explained that they have been participating in KRTI since 2017. The competition is divided into two phases: the regional selection and the final round. The launch event also served as an appreciation to all those who have supported the team’s research and competition journey.

“The results from the regional selection serve as motivation for all UNS teams to achieve the best possible outcome in the KRTI 2024 final at Gading Airfield, Yogyakarta,” Daffa said.

The participation of UNS students in KRTI 2024 is expected to contribute to the achievement of Key Performance Indicator (IKU) 2. KRTI is a national-level competition involving teams from various universities across Indonesia, providing valuable external campus experience for UNS students. Winning at KRTI 2024 would be a significant accomplishment for the UNS community.

General Manager Bengawan UV, Tri Rahmaji stated that he is delighted and proud because his teams could win three titles in KRTI 2021 after participating in four contest categories.

“Alhamdulillah, delighted and proud, my fellow’s hard works paid off from their research. Whatever the results, I believe in Allah. Alhamdulillah, this year Bengawan UV got three titles in KRTI,” Tri Rahmaji said after the closing ceremony.

The student of Mechanical Engineering Program Faculty of Engineering (FT) hoped that in next year KRTI his team could give better performance. He also stated that he would evaluate the limitation in this year’s performance to improve Bengawan UV performance in the next KRTI.

“Thank you to all parties who have supported us, from sponsors, supervisors, and parents. Thank you to UNS for facilitating us in creating works,” he added.

The Chief of Academic and Students Affairs Bureau UNS, Drs. Rohman Agus Pratomo also appreciated the achievements. Especially that UNS hosts the competition because there is special pressure to compete.

“Congratulation to Bengawan UV. These achievements made UNS proud. Hopefully, this achievement could encourage (students) to gain more achievements in the future.
