The announcement was officially made by BRIN and was met with enthusiasm by the UNS academic community. The Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., expressed his appreciation for this accomplishment, emphasizing the university’s commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and collaborative research.

“We are proud of this achievement. Being included in BRIN’s Top Collaborator list is tangible proof of UNS’s dedication to strengthening research collaborations both nationally and internationally. I extend my gratitude to all lecturers, researchers, and students who contributed to these publications,” Prof. Hartono stated to uns.ac.id on Monday (13/1/2025).

He also highlighted the importance of research collaboration in addressing societal needs through knowledge development.

“Collaboration is not just about numbers but about how research outcomes can positively impact society. We hope this accomplishment motivates us to continue improving the quality of research and publications in the future,” he added.

In the rankings released by BRIN, UNS outperformed several other universities. Universitas Airlangga (Unair) ranked 10th with 255 scholarly outputs, while Universitas Brawijaya (UB) ranked 11th with 246 outputs. UNS’s achievement of the 8th rank underscores the university’s competitiveness within an increasingly dynamic research ecosystem.

This milestone further solidifies UNS’s commitment to fostering interdisciplinary and institutional research collaborations. Moving forward, UNS aims to expand its contributions to impactful research on national and global scales. This year, LPPM UNS showcased several innovative products developed by UNS researchers, including the immersive applications Virtual Reality Anima Safari (Zoo Exploration) and VR Maritopia (Underwater Exploration) from the D3 Informatics Engineering program at the Vocational School (SV) UNS, developed by Taufiqurrakhman Nur Hidayat, S.Kom., M.Cs. CPro. Additionally, the UNS IV ICU Ventilator, a respiratory aid specifically designed for use in intensive care units, was developed by Ahmad Marzuki, S.Si., Ph.D. “This ventilator is used to support patients who require respiratory assistance, especially in critical situations like Covid-19,” Ahmad Marzuki said.

Other featured products included Nila Prabha, a natural blue dye powder derived from the Indigofera longeracemosa plant, developed by Dr. Muzzazinah, M.Si. The Expo also showcased batik with the HEBAT concept (heritage, ecology, batik, agriculture, and tourism), designed by Prof. Dr. Izza Mafruhah, S.E., M.Si., to capture the unique characteristics of a region in terms of historical heritage, ecology, batik, agriculture, and tourism. Additional exhibits included beauty products from the UNS Pharmacy study program, developed by Dr. apt. Dinar Sari Cahyaningrum W, S.Farm., M.Si., and chocolate products from the UNS Food Science and Technology study program, developed by Dr. Dimas Rahadian Aji Muhammad, S.T.P., M.Sc.

The Chairman of BRIN, Laksana Tri Handoko, expressed hope that this exhibition would foster more partnerships and collaborations among researchers, which could lead to a brighter future for Indonesia through innovative works and national achievements.

“InaRi Expo 2024 is a crucial moment to showcase the potential, capacity, and capabilities of the research community, as well as research and innovation activities in Indonesia. It represents the spirit of cooperation and hard work, leading Indonesia toward a brighter and more competitive future,” he said.

InaRi Expo is an annual event organized by BRIN as part of the celebration of the 29th National Technology Awakening Day (Hakteknas), celebrated every August 10. This year’s Expo, themed “Research and Innovation for a Better Future,” aimed to promote collaboration in innovation, technology exchange, ideas, and experiences, and to initiate the commercialization process of research and innovation products.

The forum discussed several partnership points between universities in Indonesia and France. The established partnership will be implemented in higher education, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. “The event was opened directly by the French Minister of Higher Education and Research at the University of Polytechnique Hauters-De-France-(UPHF),” said Prof. Jamal.

Not alone, Prof. Jamal traveled to France alongside other representatives from Indonesia, including the Director-General of Higher Education Research and Technology, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristek), Prof. Nizam, M.Sc., DIC., Ph.D. He stated that collaboration in the research and innovation field needs to get developed. Research and innovation development can boost university graduates’ competitiveness. “Our universities’ graduates need to be closer to the business and industrial world, thus, research and innovation need to be improved,” he explained.

Other than Prof. Nizam, the Head of the Indonesian Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Dr. Laksana Tri Handoko, M.Sc., the Indonesian Education and Culture Attaché for France, Prof. Warsito, Secretary of the Dirjendiktiristek, Prof. Tjitjik Sri Tjahjandarie, as well as the Director of Research and Community Service, Prof. Teuku Faisal Fathani, were also present at The 12th Joint Working Group (JWG) on Higher Education, Research, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship.

Currently, several Indonesian universities have established partnerships with universities in France. At least 10 (ten) universities have established partnerships with France, with a total of 587 cooperation documents.

UNS is one of the universities that has established partnerships with several campuses in France. There are currently 17 collaborations that have been carried out by UNS with campuses in France.

Not only strengthening partnership collaboration, the participants at this forum also exchanged various materials and participated in research, innovation, and entrepreneurship discussion. This workshop was attended by the village head or representing parties, the Village and Community Empowerment Office (Dispermades), the Head of the Environmental Office in Sukoharjo Regency, and the Secretary of the Surakarta City Environmental Office. Also present were students and representatives of the assisted hamlet community, as well as representatives of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).

There were two speakers invited, namely Dr. Sri Wahyono, S.Si., M.Si., from BRIN Clean Environment and Technology Center, and Arif Sholikin, the Managing Director of TIMDIS ID, a company engaged in waste recycling with the main focus on solid medical waste and HD jerrycan established in 2010.

In his presentation, Arif said that correct and sustainable waste management could support village SDGs program acceleration, where all development aspects must be beneficial for all villagers, with no exception. Village development leads to 18 sustainable development goals, which allows the future generations to remain part of the development implementation and utilization. “A correct and sustainable waste management can support villages’ SDGs program acceleration, and all development aspects must be useful for the villagers,” Arif said.

According to Arif, the key to successful waste management is sorting waste from the source. Better waste sorting will result in more efficient subsequent processing. There are at least several types of waste, including natural or organic waste, non-natural waste or inorganic waste, and hazardous waste or toxic waste.

Furthermore, he explained that waste management could use the 3R concept approach, namely the reduce, reuse, and recycle. The 3R management approach starts from picking up waste from each house, waste sorting, recycling, and organic waste management, to the use of residues that cannot be recycled.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sri Wahyono from BRIN delivered material on community-based waste treatment. According to him, community-based waste management at both the household and regional levels has a very important role in municipal waste management success. Community-based waste treatment technology is currently available in various options, including composting technology, biogas, black soldier fly (BSF) cultivation, bio-drying, and others. Humas UNS

Yanu revealed that research is a creative process that is not always related to the strict, dry, scary, and not creative processes. Conducting research means that the researcher tries to see a phenomenon using a new perspective, understand the phenomenon, and find order in the chaotic phenomenon. “And to approach the issue with an open mind and high curiosity,” Yanu added.

Feeling lost, confused, and not knowing what to do is common in the research process, and Yanu suggested that researchers need to bring divergent and convergent mindsets, or creative thinking, to solve these issues. A divergent way of thinking involves expanding ideas, creating new connections, and exploring a new line of thoughts and possibilities. “While convergent thinking focuses on the main issue, deepening the ideas, reducing weak ideas, and changing issues into solutions,” Yanu added.

Yanu explained that the next step is determining the topic and starting the research. Yanu stated that researchers need to select topics that fully represent them so that researchers have the curiosity to discuss the topics further. “Find topics that are interesting, align with field of expertise, focus, with an integrated concept, available literature, unique, and new. Don’t forget to specialize your topic to maintain the focus,” Yanu explained.

This stage is followed by selecting the methods and approaches to solving the issues, paying attention to 5W+1H, discussing the selected topics with others to capture new perspectives and ideas, and putting the research ideas into a research proposal. Researchers also need to effectively and efficiently prepare data collection strategies, categorize their data, data processing, reporting, and master the write-up skills, including avoiding plagiarism.

The last step of the process is publishing research findings. Yanu stated that the publication is usually done in the form of journal articles that contain several parts, from abstract to recommendations. “The keys in creative research write, rewrite, and resubmit,” Yanu concluded. Humas UNS

The team was supervised by Dr. Revi Gama Hatta Novika, SST., M.Kes and Ubaidillah, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D.

Dr. Revi Gama Hatta Novika, SST., M.Kes, stated that the product prototype was funded by MBKM Grant and supported by the National Research and Innovation Center (BRIN) Indonesia in the product development stage. The product was named Effleurage Robot, a pain-relieving innovation for mothers experiencing labor contractions or before labor.

Dr. Revi discussed the idea with Ubaidillah, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Rufidah Maulina, SST., M.Sc, Siti Nurhidayati, S.S.T., M.Keb, and Nurul Jannatul Wahidah, S.ST., M.Kes, and her students. The idea came from the Covid-19 condition, which prevented the soon-to-be-mother from having her family member accompany her and provided effleurage massages to reduce her muscle pain. “During the Covid-19 condition, (she) needs something to replace those family members’ role,” Dr. Revi explained on Thursday (24/2/2022).

Effleurage Robot is a chair robot that provides effleurage massage with strong, medium, and soft settings on pregnant women’s hips to reduce labor pain. The robot also reduces the work of people accompanying a mother in labor and is equipped with adjustable features that can be used when walking, sitting, and lying down. The study on Effleurage Robot effectiveness was implemented in Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Hospital for a pregnant woman in 1^st stage labor. The research showed significantly reduced pain, showing high effectiveness for stage 1 labor.

Hafida Salsabila, the student coordinator, stated that she obtained lots of experiences and learned from her participation in the grant. The innovation was also submitted for Student Creativity Program (PKM), International essay competition, and MBKM Grant before finally winning the current competition in the Tertiary School category with Biotechnology and Health subtheme. She added that the midwifery and medical science students could prepare the idea of such a robot, but they need help from mechanical engineering to create such innovation. “Thus, the assembly process runs well and creates a usable tool,” she added on Thursday (24/2/2022).

The competition was held by the Malaysian Invention & Design Society (MINDS) in 1989 and was participated by students from various countries. ITEX is a platform for researchers to introduce their innovations and finding to the business community.
