This commitment was shared by Erick Thohir after signing the Memorandum of Understanding between UNS and Ministry of SOEs in G.P.H. Haryo Mataram UNS Auditorium, Sunday (6/2/2022).

“It’s guaranteed (to be recruited). Some of UNS graduates already work in the SOEs,” Erick Thohir stated to uns.ac.id.

Erick Thohir added that to increase young graduates who work in SOEs, his institution put forwards innovation, technology, and work together with universities for research and development.

“Therefore, recruitment for the best of university students in Indonesia or Indonesians abroad, we encourage to join SOEs so that we have the continue leadership, sustainability, and policy for the development of our SOEs,” he stated.

The Points Agreed

The Memorandum of Understanding between UNS and Ministry of SOEs was signed by the Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho and Erick Thohir. The signing ceremony was also attended by the Vice-Rectors of UNS and Vice-Mayor of Surakarta, Teguh Prakosa.

Through the agreement, both institutions agreed to employ all of their abilities and resources under the mutual benefits principle in research, education, community service, and the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program.

After the signing ceremony, Prof. Jamal openly invited all professionals in SOEs to share their knowledge and expertise with UNS students.

“To achieve the great result (because), it is a grand design of collaboration between the Ministry of SOEs and UNS. We also hope that professionals in SOEs (could assist) in developing UNS. To Pak Erick, we open our door,” Prof. Jamal stated. Humas UNS

Erick Thohir visited UNS to take part as one of the speakers in the National Seminar “Unicorn Indonesia for the World: Discussing Government’s Strategies in Growing New Economic Power Towards Golden Indonesia 2045” held in G.P.H. Haryo Mataram UNS Auditorium. In the hybrid national seminar, the minister shared several important messages for UNS students regarding the future economic and workforce prospects.

The former president of Inter Milan Football Club stated that the golden age of Indonesia’s economy will be achieved in 2045. Therefore, in the journey to achieve the destination, he predicted that Indonesia’s economy would grow around 3-5 percent annually. This percentage is a great opportunity to place Indonesia at the fourth position in the greatest economy globally.

“The data really says that the global community sees that Indonesia will continue to grow until 2045,” he stated.

However, this potential needs to be supported by the increase in the number of entrepreneurs, which in developed countries could reach up to 10-14 percent of the population to support the economy. In Indonesia, only 3 percent of the population are entrepreneurs. Thus, he considers the sector as potential to be developed until 2045.

“The young generation of Indonesia, after research, want to be an entrepreneur. Because it is possible if jobs creation was only done by the central or local government, usually, jobs offered by entrepreneurs are larger and more massive,” Erick Thohir stated.

UNS Students are Demanded to be Adaptive

Increasing the number of entrepreneurs is only one of numerous challenges faced by the government to boost Indonesia’s economy towards 2045. The government is also faced with the issue of preparing technology-skilled human resources to support their efforts. Erick Thohir stated that currently, 17 million technologically adaptive and able-to-accelerate employees are needed because many new jobs were created while conventional and old jobs were replaced by technology. These new jobs are, for example, data scientist and analyst, big data engineer, biotechnology and food engineering, market research, medical personnel, and technologies

“It is a must that the economic growth in Indonesia is based on the nation’s ability in creating the best human resources’ skills,” Erick Thohir stated. “Therefore, I and the rectors, when I was invited as a speaker, it is important for universities, SOEs, private companies, and the central and local government to start mapping on the jobs that are growing. Because it will be a waste if we teach students, but the jobs are disappearing because of the technology,” he added. Humas UNS

The Chairwoman of Pusdemtanas LPPM UNS, Dr. Sunny Ummul Firdaus, stated that the existence of startup companies received wide attention recently. This condition leads to the massive increase in unicorn growth in Indonesia that will be highly beneficial in achieving Golden Indonesia 2045. “Considering this opportunity, Pusdemtanas LPPM UNS holds this seminar,” Dr. Sunny explained.

The Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, stated in his remark that since 2020 the world had been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic that struck almost all economic sectors. In this condition, unicorn startups played a significant role in maintaining the development and growth of Indonesia’s economy. “Therefore, I fully appreciate this national seminar and thank you to the Minister for SOEs for making time to visit UNS and share tips to develop unicorns in Indonesia,” Prof. Jamal stated.

The seminar was opened with sharing on digital citizenship from Prof. Dr. Triyanto as a Professor in Civic Education (PPKn) Program UNS. Prof. Triyanto stated that the sign that Indonesian people have digital citizenship is digital literacy and technology skill. The sharing was followed by materials from Putra Pamungkas, Ph.D., an expert, and researcher in UNS Fintech Center. Dr. Putra shared that unicorn startups could grow in Indonesia because of the diversified market conditions that could be optimized through a clear target market, innovation, collaboration, and venture capital for additional funding. Dr. Putra also underlined several issues regarding unicorn startup management, such as sharing economy, corporate governance, securities, and PO, that could ensure unicorn startups’ impact on the community in general.

The last material was delivered by the Minister for SOEs, Erick Thohir, discussing the digital ecosystem in Indonesia. Erick Thohir believes that considering Indonesia’s economic growth that moves between 3-5%, and it is possible that Indonesia could grow into the largest economy globally. Therefore, Indonesian people should be able to face various challenges and disruptions, including pushing for the digital ecosystem. Erick Thohir added that Indonesian people need to master eight skills: skill programming, artificial intelligence, digital design and data visualization, digital project management, digital marketing, social media, data science dan data analytics, and leadership decision making. He also mentioned that Indonesian SOEs had initiated the development of a digital ecosystem that focuses on infrastructure, trades, and aggregator sectors.

Additionally, the minister also emphasized the crucial factors in developing technology: human resources and ecosystem. “We need to ensure that the market supports the economic growth and opens jobs for the Indonesian people,” he stated.
