An interdisciplinary team of UNS lecturers organized the event. The team was initiated by UNS Vice-Rector for Planning, Cooperation, Internationalization, and Information, Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D. Members include:

This collaborative initiative is a partnership between Aston University, UK, and UNS, Indonesia. The Gender Equality Program (GEP), funded by the British Council, addresses challenges faced by female university graduates entering the workforce. The program promotes gender equality through training, research, and institutional collaboration, supporting women’s empowerment and creating an inclusive educational environment.

The project integrates economic, cultural, and legal approaches to enhance women’s professional participation. The Matching Fund from Kedaireka under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemenristekdikti) provides additional support.

Research Methodology and Collaboration

The UNS research team employs various methodologies, including interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), and expert consultations. A comprehensive literature review strengthens their analysis. Respondents include students, alumni, lecturers, administrative staff, and the Career Development Centre at UNS. The team also collaborates with universities in five regions with high gender inequality rates. They were Maluku, Central Kalimantan, Jambi, Papua, and Mataram.

Key Outcomes and Future Plans

“As a result of this project, we will publish a report. It will focus on the challenges female students face in employment and entrepreneurship in the short term. Additionally, we will develop educational resources for students and staff, followed by a written publication assessing their impact (medium-term). A dedicated website will also be launched to share these resources with universities in Indonesia and the UK. This will foster ongoing collaboration and best practice sharing,” Dr. Erna said.

Since late 2023, the team has proposed several recommendations. One recommendation is to integrate gender equality topics into university curricula. Others include revitalizing gender equality mainstreaming across academic communities and providing specialized training for graduates entering the job market.

Professor Hannah Bartlett, Lead Applicant from Aston University, expressed her enthusiasm. “I am honored to be part of this seminar. It is a privilege to conduct research alongside the UNS team in the Gender Equality Program. I hope the website we initiated will positively impact students and the wider community,” she said.

The seminar featured guest speaker Rahayu Purwaningsih, Director of Solidaritas Perempuan untuk Kemanusiaan dan Hak Asasi Manusia (SpekHAM) Surakarta. The event attracted 300 attendees, including representatives from Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) and Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. It also included from Universitas Slamet Riyadi, and UHN Sugriwa.

Representing the UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. I Gusti Ayu Ketut Rachmi Handayani, S.H., M.M., delivered a speech. She serves as the Head of the Institute of Research and Community Service (LPPM) UNS. She congratulated the team on their research achievements and successful event organization.

The UNS Virtual Job Fair carries the theme “Break the Limit, Beyond Imagination.” The event is being held online via Zoom Cloud Meeting over two days, from Wednesday (18/9/2024) to Thursday (19/9/2024). It targets job seekers with higher education backgrounds, with 201 job vacancies opened by the 25 partner companies.

The UNS Virtual Job Fair plays a key role in achieving Key Performance Indicator (IKU) 1, which focuses on the percentage of undergraduate and diploma graduates securing employment. This achievement also helps universities shorten the waiting period for new graduates to find jobs. Additionally, through the UNS Virtual Job Fair, graduates have the opportunity to secure jobs with salaries exceeding 1,2 times the regional minimum wage.

The UNS Job Fair XXVI was officially opened by the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Alumni at UNS, Prof. Dody Ariawan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D. In his opening remarks, Prof. Dody thanked the partner companies participating in this edition of the job fair. He emphasized that this event not only provides a platform for alumni but also offers partner companies the chance to recruit the best talent that UNS produces each year. Thousands of graduates, equipped with a variety of competencies, enter the workforce annually.

“This event is organized to serve as a bridge for UNS alumni to achieve their dream jobs, aligned with their competencies and skills,” Prof. Dody said.

The Head of CDC UNS, Prof. Dr. Ir. Kusnandar, M.Si., stated that the job fair is one of their flagship programs. Other initiatives include strengthening internal management, providing information and career development services, recruitment services, career guidance and counseling, developing partnerships, and conducting tracer studies.

“CDC UNS envisions itself as a career development center that is responsive to the job market,” Prof. Kusnandar said.

The event was opened by the European and African Region Coordinator for UPT KLI UNS, Dimas Rahadian, Ph.D. In his remarks, Dr. Dimas said that this event became an opportunity for students to find out more about the Chevening scholarship, which is one of the prestigious scholarships available. Dimas explained that about 20 UNS lecturers are UK graduates. For this reason, Dimas hopes that the relay baton can be passed on by students and alumni to be able to study in the UK, especially if it is funded through Chevening scholarships. “We, as part of UNS academic members, expect our alumni to continue their Master’s studies in the UK with this Chevening scholarship. Please listen to today’s presentation carefully, thus, we can make extended preparation, especially for any administration, required GPA, English proficiency, and application procedures, therefore, when you graduate, you are ready to compete for this scholarship,” he said.

He continued that the number of alumni who pursue further studies becomes one of the benchmarks of university performance included in Key Performance Indicators (IKU) 1. For this reason, his party encourages students who will graduate to be able to continue their studies. “If there are more and more students continue their studies, especially abroad, especially with scholarships, especially funded by prestigious scholarships like Chevening, it will be the pride of the entire academic community at UNS,” he said.

Chevening scholarship dissemination was delivered by the Network and Alumni Officer for the British Embassy in Jakarta, Raras Wulandaru. On this occasion, she explained various aspects of the Chevening Scholarship, ranging from the advantages of studying in the UK, application procedures, administration, and various technical matters related to this scholarship. Chevening Scholarship itself is a scholarship program provided by the UK government through the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO). This scholarship is provided to people from various countries, including Indonesia, who want to continue their Master’s degree study at all universities in the UK under any study program. This means that the recipient can choose their desired study program without the limitation of choosing a specific study program. “The Master study period in the UK is only one year, or, more precisely, 9 (nine) months. Meanwhile, in Indonesia or other countries, the study period needs one and a half or two years. Thus, for all of you who probably don’t want to stay in school for too long and want to contribute quickly or work for your home country, this is actually the most favorable option. For one year, you can get a degree and then go back home to your country of origin to contribute,” she explained.

This scholarship provides full financing for its recipients during their Master’s study in the UK. Moreover, Chevening scholarship recipients will also receive the living cost and flights cost from their home country to the UK. The visa fee is also covered by the Chevening scholarship. Meanwhile, during their study in the UK, Chevening scholarship recipients were also given the opportunity to do an internship at existing companies in the UK and to participate in volunteer activities. Raras also said that Chevening scholarship recipients would get information about conferences and various other activities, both academic and non-academic. “There are many activities that can be done. One example is every two weeks, there is an email notifying certain events, competitions, conferences, or talk shows. There is also a non-academic visit as well, thus, both academic and non-academic activities are covered in this program, even though you only spent one year in the UK. The Chevening program considering not only academic aspect but also the non-academic,” said Raras.

To apply for this scholarship, prospective applicants must have completed their undergraduate studies. Additionally, prospective registrants must have two years of work experience. Prospective applicants were also required to never receive a study scholarship from the UK government. Rest assured, the Chevening scholarship does not ask potential registrants to complete English proficiency tests under specific scores. That’s because Chevening follows each university policy. Each university has a different English proficiency policy. For this reason, prospective registrants must follow the rules of their respective prospective universities.

To register, prospective applicants must fill out an online application form. In the application, prospective registrants were asked to make short essays following four different themes, namely leadership and influence, a study in the UK, networking, and career plans, with certain character limitations. Further, Dr. Kusnandar explains that preparation for graduates before entering employment is crucial to the graduates’ careers. Moreover, during this digital era, the job market is overly competitive. The Covid-19 also affects the trends in the job market. “The advancement of digital technology greatly affects the job markets. This condition will add color to the job market faced by the UNS alumni and job seekers in general. We will learn more about the tips to compete in the competitive job market through this PJT,” Dr. Kusnandar said.

The Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Sajidan, M. Si., confirms this statement, stating that the challenge in 2020 is enormous because of the pandemic. Moreover, the skills demanded by employers are different. According to Prof. Sajidan, innovation is an essential skill that graduates must possess. Innovation development is crucial considering the accelerating and more complex world advancement. The graduates must be able to adapt themselves to the changes. Further, Prof. Sajidan explains several essential skills, which include expertise and complex communication.

“There are two things that you need to master, expertise in your field and complex communication, which not only require language skills but more about communication skills. English ability also needs a continuous development, where conversation context needs extensive consideration,” explains Prof. Sajidan.

All of those important points were discussed during the Virtual PJT. The event was attended by 220 participants, with two excellent speakers, namely Fadjri Kirana A, S.Psi., M.A. (psychologist in CDC UNS) and Retno Wulandari, S.H., M.Si. (the General Manager of The Sunan Hotel Solo). Humas UNS
