Wahyu succeeded in becoming the winner of the 2022 DAS alongside two other candidates Faizal Maulana from the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) and Jovita Aurelia from Unika Atma Jaya Jakarta. The three managed to set aside 1,002 registrants from 338 campuses and 329 districts/cities. The research topic proposed by Wahyu is the Development of Cancer Drug Delivery to a Target in the Brain.

For this victory, Wahyu felt happy and grateful because he was also awarded a scholarship for a Master study. With the scholarship, he can continue his education to a Master degree, including research assistance, which can ease his parents’ financial burden. “Thank God, I am grateful to be one of the winners,” said Wahyu in his release on Monday (1/8/22).

The Dexa Science Scholarship Award is a scholarship program for Master’s studies with full financing. The awardees were given the freedom to choose study programs in the A-listed accreditation campus in Indonesia with the proposed Master’s research proposal related to human health. Additionally, the winners of the Dexa Award Science Scholarship were also provided a career opportunity at Dexa Group.

Further, Wahyu also advises students who are currently studying in undergraduate programs to never give up on pursuing their dreams. If there is an opportunity for you to walk toward your dream, feel free to try—the courage to try shows that we have managed to set the first foothold to achieve the dream. “Being a successful person is not enough, be a successful person who can benefit others. Never give up on pursuing your dreams, if there is an opportunity, do not hesitate to try,” said Wahyu.

The Dean of FMIPA UNS, Drs. Harjana, M.Sc., M.Sc. Ph.D., highly appreciates the achievements made by the alumni. “Before Wahyu, in 2019, there was an alumnus of the Chemistry Study Program FMIPA UNS, namely Yayan D. The competition they won was conducted by the Palm Oil Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDPKS) Ministry of Finance that opened a proposal upload on 24 June 2020. The selected proposals were funded to conduct an eight months research from September 2020 to April 2021, followed by a finalist presentation on 26-27 August 2021.

Fiqri and the team submitted a proposal on biomaterial development of Functionalized Porous Cellulose-based drug delivery from oil palm empty bunch. This idea was based on the increasing number of cancer patients and cancer treatment that is based on the conventional chemotherapy method that could kill normal rapidly growing cells besides the cancer cells. Their innovation created cellulose-based materials that could control medicinal release on the targeted cancer cells. The cellulose used in the development process that was sourced from empty palm oil bunch also helps with reducing palm oil waste in Indonesia. “Besides increasing the use of empty palm oil bunch in biomedical application,” Fiqri explained on Thursday (7/10/2021).

A total of 468 proposals were submitted in the competition, with only 30 proposals won the research funding, and only ten finalists had the opportunity to present their findings to be selected as 1st to 3rd champions. Fiqri stated that his team was really grateful to win the funding and the opportunity. He also said that they did not expect to win the competition. “Happy and touched everything mixed into one,” Fiqri said.

Fiqri and the team hoped that their research does not stop here because many stages are needed to process their idea into an alternative solution for cancer treatment. Humas UNS

Twenty IPA teachers at SMP as members of Teachers and Course Discussion Board (MGMP) IPA SMP joined the training in two sessions. The first session was a briefing, and the second session was on the training to prepare enrichment materials in the integrated IPA course, assignment, and questions-and-answers. Both sessions were conducted offline under the strictest health protocols.

“IPA course at the SMP is currently considered as less representative. Therefore, innovation from teachers during teaching, teaching media, and assessment instrument are needed,” Prof. Sulistyo, as the Chief of Research Group, explained.

The training as a form of community service program from the Research Group was held to achieve quality education by improving the quality of IPA teachers at the SMP level in the Karanganyar District. This program is in line with the UNS commitment mentioned by the Institute of Research and Community Service (LPPM) that UNS facilitates faculty members to implement Higher Education Tridharma through education, research, and community services.

“Training for teachers needs to be conducted periodically to refresh and deepen their information on learning practices,” Prof. Sulistyo added.

Training for teaching staff is also considered to help the educational sector in facing the difficult situation due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the end of the event, Prof. Sulistyo and the team shared their knowledge through an assignment for the teachers to prepare learning materials based on STEAM that refers to transformative learning using students’ initial knowledge. Humas UNS
