UNS — Next year, 2022, will mark the start of the digital television era in Indonesia. The migration from analog broadcasting into digital broadcasting demands appropriate steps and strategies in producing information through communication channels. Based on this phenomenon, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta started a collaboration with PT. Media Televisi Indonesia (Metro TV) on Thursday (16/12/2021) in Ruang Sidang 1 Dr. Prakoso Building UNS.

The collaboration between Metro TV and UNS will synergize three activities, education, research, and community services. The collaboration also covers the implementation of Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM), instructed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemdikbduristek).

The Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs UNS, Prof. Dr. rer.nat. Sajidan, M.Si., who represented the Rector of UNS, attended the signing ceremony directly. Prof. Sajidan stated that this collaboration is a means to align the academic, business, and industrial worlds. Prof. Sajidan also thanked Metro TV for the collaboration and the opportunity for an internship for Communication Science Program faculty members.

“In the digitalization era, we need to continue our self-development. In this context, the MBKM program has brought campuses closer to the business and industrial world that is expected to equip university students and faculty members to accelerate the education 4.0,” Prof. Sajidan stated.

The collaboration that will also provide an opportunity for faculty members’ internships is essential to improve faculty members’ capability in various fields and follow the current development. The Director of Program and Development of PT. Media Televisi Indonesia, Agus Mulyadi, who also attended the signing ceremony, mentioned that his station wants to strengthen the relationship with UNS as a means of information on communication science transfer between UNS and Metro TV.

“We have a long partnership with UNS, and we hope the collaboration agreed this year could contribute and improve the synergy. Metro TV is fully aware that in the media era, we could not stand alone; we could not sit still with our resources. We need to build synergy and collaborate with many parties to help each other,” Agus stated.

Besides the partnership in Higher Education Tri Dharma and MBKM, this partnership will also focus on broadcasting, socialization, and publication through digital and other media. The agreement will be effective for three years with the Communication Science Program UNS as the collaboration target. Humas UNS

The first day of assessment was attended by the Mayor of Surakarta, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Karanganyar District Regent Juliyatmono, Kudus District Regent H. M Hartopo, and Batang District Regent Wihaji.

Rahmanto.

In his opening remark before opening the assessment, Prof. Sajidan stated that information disclosure in the reformation era is a need and responsibility for state administrators because people want to be involved in every policy-making process and demand accountable and transparent government according to the good governance principles.

“Moreover, the modernization of Information Technology and communication that provides freedom for people to get any information they want easily and rapidly,” he stated.

Therefore, Prof. Sajidan considers that government, institutes, and public agencies need to open themselves to the community and provide information surrounding their policies openly and accessible for people. Although, on the one hand, information openness is often abused for certain interests, Prof. Sajidan stated that technology modernization should be used as a momentum for the government to take strategic policies.

“This mandate encourages all public agencies in Indonesia, including public universities, to apply public information disclosure. This is an implementation of Law No. 14/ 2008 on Public Information Disclosure,” Prof. Sajidan explained.

The Commissioner of Provincial Information Commission (KIP) of Central Java Province, Ermy Sri Ardhyanti, explained in her speech that the assessment was held to provide a transparent perspective on public information for the community. In the two-days assessment, 15 districts/municipalities, 14 public hospitals at district/municipality and province/central region, and 29 provincial units at Central Java Province will be examined. KIP of Central Java will assess and classify the local government or public agencies into informative, moving to informative, quite informative, lack of informativeness, and not informative. Ermy Sri Ardhyanti mentioned that this public assessment had been held since 2014, and she hoped that this assessment could improve information transparency management by all local governments and public agencies in Central Java Province.

“Fifty-eight public agencies have passed the selection process wince May 2021. Including website check and social media managed (by the agencies). This public assessment is the fourth stage, and those who participate in this assessment are public agencies with a score higher than 80,” Ermy explained. Humas UNS

UNS — The Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) for International Cooperation and Services (International Office), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, held a Webinar in Intercultural Communication Strategy to support the development of the UNS international student service system. This webinar aims to provide insight and improve UNS academic support staff competencies in providing academic and non-academic services to international students.

The number of international students enrolled at a university contributes 5% in the assessment indicators of the QS World University Ranking. As one of the universities included in the First National Cluster, UNS is mandated to achieve World Class University predicate, which can be achieved through the QS benchmarks.

During the workshop on Thursday (28/10/2021), the Head of the UNS International Office, Rino Ardhian N., Ph.D., said that international students enrolled at UNS show a significant increase. “Registration for the 2020 academic year recorded a total of 105 applicants. However, the number is decreased in 2021 to 52 applicants because of the pandemic period, while the 2022 academic year increased to 241 applicants from 41 countries. This situation will be a challenge for the academic support staff to provide the best services for international students,” he said in his speech.

The first session of this workshop invites Marieti Debyora Gardiana, S.Si., as the Sub Coordinator of Administration for the UNS International Office. Gardiana presented her research on intercultural communication strategies for the development of the UNS international student service system. The research was conducted using non-APBN funding through the UNS Research and Community Service (P2M) program managed by the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) UNS.

“The idea for this research started from a discussion with Mr. Sulistiyo Joko Wahyudi, ST., along with the other UNS International Office staff colleagues, regarding the challenges in intercultural communication and the strategies that have been implemented to overcome them,” explained Gardiana.

The research, whose team consisted of Rino Ardhian Nugroho, Ph.D., and Albert Muhammad Isrun Naini, Ph.D., was conducted through in-depth interviews with 12 International Affairs Office staff from 5 (five) universities.

The second session was a talk show with three invited speakers, namely, Abdul Rohman, S. Hum., a staff from Diponegoro University International Office; Anas Fauzi, S.Pd., a Staff for Foreign Cooperation in Universitas Negeri Semarang, and Erna Mustikasari, MIKom., the manager of the Student Development Partnership (KNB) scholarship for the UNS Graduate School.

Led by Sulistiyo Joko Wahyudi, ST., the invited speakers share practical tips and tricks in communicating with international students according to their respective experiences. The workshop was attended by approximately 115 participants and was concluded with the distribution of a book entitled ‘Be Curious and Act Globally’ by Yudi Sastroredjo. Humas UNS

UNS — A student from the Communication Science Program Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta represents Indonesia in Global Communication Forum. This excellent student is Odie Yohandi, a third-semester student who participated in the international forum held by Universiti Utara Malaysia online through the Zoom Meeting and Facebook Live.

Odie, who is also active as a manager in the Student Association of Communication Science Program (Himakom) FISIP UNS, shared the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia, including its policies and its impact on people’s lives. “In Indonesia, the government implemented PPKM policy (partial-lockdown) following the increase in daily positive cases. This policy has a significant impact on the economic and tourism sectors due to mobility limitation,” Odie explained to other delegations from Malaysia and Pakistan.

Odie also added that the Indonesian government has tried to disseminate information through social media and opinion leaders. Public communication through new and conventional media continues sharing information until the smallest level in the community.

“Influencers from community leaders, actresses, educational figures, and well-known figures are all help government to promote its program,” Odiea added in the event held on Saturday (17/7/2021).

Public relation performed by the government is vital to build public’s trust toward the government. Odie quoted the Directorate General of Information and Public Communication of the Ministry of Communication and Information, Prof. Widodo Muktiyo, a Professor of Communication Science in UNS, that public relations institutions are vital in building messages for the general public. Therefore, the message is not only sent but delivered.

“Amid the pandemic, Covid-19 virus is dangerous, but disinformation is not less dangerous because there are many information or hoaxes regarding Covid-19 pandemic that reach the community and makes them confused,” Odie added.

At the end of the discussion, Odie explained the educational condition in Indonesia due to the Covid-19, which makes digital tools and technology as life support.

“We apply school from home activities using various online learning media. After applying (this method), student’s responses are not as natural as the offline learning process. The effect of online media is students difficult to understand learning map, anticipating a response, and hard to develop personal knowledge and abilities,” Odie concluded. Humas UNS
