Their extraordinary experience in the competition provided valuable lessons that could inspire other Civil Engineering students, particularly those currently in their fourth and sixth semesters.

The team competed against 21 other teams from six countries, including Japan, Mongolia, Taiwan, Thailand, and host country Vietnam. One of their most notable achievements was successfully constructing a bridge that could withstand a load of up to 350 kg without collapsing, surpassing teams from prestigious universities such as Gifu University and Yokohama National University.

Maxvallecia Frikandy, one of the team members, shared insights into the challenges they faced during the competition, which took place from August 26 to 29, 2024.
“The biggest challenge was aligning our bridge design with the highly detailed regulations, particularly regarding deflection and weight. Additionally, sourcing high-quality rigid steel materials and coordinating logistics for shipping to Vietnam required extra effort,” Maxvallecia said, as quoted from ft.uns.ac.id on Friday (17/1/2025).

Despite the challenges, they were proud to represent UNS on the international stage, thanks to the unwavering support of their team and mentor. Their success was the result of meticulous preparation conducted well in advance of the competition. Starting with an initial design using software like SAP2000 to predict deflection and structural strength, the team overcame limited access to specialized laboratories by transforming a local workshop into a “mini-lab” for regular testing. “Every weekend, we refined our design until we were confident it was ready for the competition,” Maxvallecia added.

Their standout strategy was optimizing the bridge’s strength with lightweight rigid steel, supported by machine learning analysis and studies of competitors’ designs. Effective time management was another key factor in their success. They divided tasks and held regular meetings to ensure everything progressed as planned. Open communication and teamwork free of conflict helped them perform cohesively as a solid unit.

Guidance and Support from Supervisor

Dr. Eng. Ir. Halwan Alfisa Saifullah, S.T., M.T., played a crucial role as the team’s mentor, providing technical and mental guidance. Strong collaboration among team members, with clearly defined roles, fostered a synergy that carried them through the judging stage. The Asia Bridge Competition taught valuable lessons in hard work, collaboration, and innovation.

This competition also highlighted that civil engineering goes beyond design and construction. It is also about innovation and creating impactful solutions. For fourth- and sixth-semester students aspiring to follow in their footsteps, the team recommended mastering software such as SAP2000, Revit, and ETABS, and understanding Building Information Modeling (BIM) concepts.

International competitions like the Asia Bridge Competition offer significant opportunities to enhance portfolios, expand professional networks, and prepare for future careers. In the online competition with the “Investment Alternative and Saving Methods in Millennials Era” theme, Farrel, who was supervised by Amad Saeroji, S.S. M.Sc., was interested in participating in the competition because it was a prestigious competition.

“At first (I was) pessimistic because the participants were quite many with great works, but with courage and determination, finally participated in the competition,” Farrel stated to uns.ac.id team on Friday (24/12/2021).

Farrel submitted a work that discusses the importance of investing from early age and saving. He also shared the need to be careful in making an investment to prevent the community from being trapped in fake investments. His videos took three days to complete from the production process, scenario writing, storyboard development, video take, and editing. He competed with hundreds of other teams from all around Indonesia, and he was strongly moved by the result.

“I was so moved because I could win two different competitions because truthfully I was pessimistic with the work I made, but with maximum efforts and prayers, Alhamdulillah (I) could get the best result,” Farrel stated.

To uns.ac.id, Faqih explained that the competition was opened with an offer to propose an innovation for building construction amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The building was an Integrated Engineering Laboratory Building Universitas Jember, six floors building, 2,208.8 m building on 25,000 m2 land. The team used the Building Information Modelling innovation with the Naviswork application. “This innovation has easy access using HP and tablet that reduces the risk of rework and spread of Covid-19,” Faqih explained on Tuesday (21/12/2021).

Interesting visualization and time saving are other benefits offered by the SS-07 Bearnes Team, which also incorporated the concept of lean construction in their plan. Their computation showed that the construction work would take 163 working works with IDR 23.3 billion costs, including 10% VAT. The offer was then formulated in a tender document that contains technical offers, site layout, innovation, strategy, implementation method, scheduling, and work safety aspects. The team also included offered prices and a Bill of Quantities (BoQ) for the project.

This achievement made the team member delighted and grateful. Their one-month hard work pays off. The team also stated that they participated in Semar Solid Community that enables them to compete with other universities such as Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Politeknik Negeri Semarang, and Politeknik Negeri Banyuwangi. The achievement will encourage them to work better in the future and as a learning experience for the team.

“In the future, we want to participate in other competitions. Hopefully, our expectation or target is to win the 1^st prize,” Faqih said. Humas UNS

In his report, Prof. Dody stated that KRTI 2021 is participated by 163 teams from 61 universities in Indonesia in four divisions with different themes. The divisions are Racing Plane (RP), Fixed-Wing (FW), Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL), and Technology Development (TD). “This competition aims to facilitate students in creating in the aerodynamic field, especially flying robot. Besides as a means of building networking, information exchange, and educating the community, students, observers, researchers, and flying robot activists,” Prof. Dody reported.

Muslih, M.Si., the Head of Administration Subdivision Puspresnas, stated that KRTI is a part of Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) implementation that aims to encourage university students to be active in an academic while developing themselves as a creative, competitive individual with strong characters. “KRTI is held to train university students on unmanned flying vehicles, which includes an assessment on configuration, control, data collection, flying parameters, observation, mapping, and delivery of packages in a location or vertical building,” he added.

In his opening remark, the Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho, appreciated Kemendikbudristek’s trust towards the Faculty of Engineering (FT) UNS as host and managing committee of KRTI 2021. “UNS is committed to always providing the best services for the success of unmanned vehicle or KRTI contest from 15-20 November 2021. Welcome and have a fair competition, 163 teams from 61 universities in Sumatera, Batam, Java, Bali, Borneo, Sulawesi, to Maluku Utara,” Prof. Jamal said.

In the next five days, all 163 teams will compete in the annual contest held by Puspresnas. Besides hosting the contest, UNS also participated in the competition through its representatives from the Bengawan UV team, who succeeded in participating in the final round in all four divisions. Although competing with many teams from other universities, the team did not give up and tried their best and wanted to see the result of their hard works. The team is delighted with the result and appreciates team works that they kept to the end of the competition. It is possible that the team will participate in more competition better in the future with a more innovative business idea. The team also considers their business sustainability to benefit the community. To the uns.ac.id, Khairum explained that the organic soap idea was developed due to its practicality.

“This business plan has a great opportunity to be implemented. Our team is preparing the realistic sustainability of this business and expect supports from the surrounding community,” Khairum said.

Enotech 2021 competition was held by the Student Association in Agricultural Industry Engineering (Himatirta) Faculty of Agricultural Engineering (FTP) Universitas Jember (Unej) that has two sub-competition, business plan, and national poster competition. To uns.ac.id, Zahra Cantiabela stated that she is happy and grateful for the achievement. She was also confused when knowing that they could win three national competitions consecutively. “Finally, we could win three national competitions and make UNS proud,” Zahra stated on Tuesday (26/10/2021).

Their accomplishments are 3^rd place at Statistic Explore 2021 infographic competition held by Student Association of Statistics Program (Himasta) Universitas Syiah Kuala; 3^rd place and favorite winner at Avenger Up 2021 infographic competition held by Student Association of Electronic Engineering Program (HMTE) Universitas Pertamina; 1^st place in Infographic Caption Environmental Competition (Infection) held by Student Association of Environmental Science UNS.

Through their works, the girls offered various solutions. Their “Energy Conservation Is Not A Trend, But A Necessity” submitted to Avenger Up 2021 discussed the alternative energy in which Zahra and Ruth shared their ideas of energy conservation through the use of organic wastes through co-firing technique as an alternative solution for the depleting coal reserves.

In Statistic Explore 2021, they submitted “Indonesia SMART – Strategi Masyarakat & Pemerintah Road to the Internet of Things (Community and Government Strategy Road to Internet of Things)” infographic that shares the tips to develop Indonesia, in which they offered a solution of city planning towards smart province using the Internet of Things (IoT).

They also created an infographic on how to maintain water clean amid the pandemic that they submitted to E-ction 2021. This infographic supports the effort to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for clean water and sanitation.

“We always (have) discussions. (We) also helped each other in searching for materials. Helping each other in designs, and revising together as well,” Ruth Andini stated.

By participating in the infographic competition Zahra and Ruth tried to maximize their potential in data processing and design. They learned to observe the current issues and creatively presented them in the form of an exciting infographic. Infographic is also closely related to their major of study, statistics.

Their three achievements were accomplished at the end of September 2021 and were inseparable from the role of Irwan Susanto, S.Si, DEA., and Dr. Winita Sulandari, S.Si., Msi., as their supervisors in the competitions. Humas UNS

The competition invited 80 participants from various scout branch quarters in Central Java. Dhita explained that the selection process selected 37 participants from 24 branch quarters. The selection involved digital assets bookkeeping on schools and lower-level quarters in each region, preparing articles and vlog. “We also need to act promptly in Jogo Timeline, retweet and repost because we act as the agent to share information to the community,” Dhita explained to uns.ac.id on Tuesday (26/10/2021).

Participants were asked to fill the digital platforms with positive information and news for a month before five finalists were selected for the next competition stage in Semarang. “We were provided an opportunity to visit Suara Merdeka, Jateng Pos, and other tourism sectors,” the 3^rd-semester student explained.

Dhita was the representative from the Branch Quarter of Klaten. She was also the youngest participant in the competition. The Chemical Engineering Program student admitted that she was happy and touched when she was announced as the 2^nd Champion in the Malam Puncak Anugerah.

“I felt happy and sad because I feel that I am nobody without my family and friends who supported me. I am a young girl among the winners. Thank you for all the experiences and supports,” Dhita stated.

Concluding the interview, Dhita mentioned that she wished to introduce Scouting as an exciting activity. “Let’s take a role. Scout is flexible. Scout is not just clapping hands. I hope not only me or one or two people who know Scouting, but we need to open our insights, we could become a part of the agents to change behavior. Scout does not know full service or alumni, as long as we have scout within us,” Dhita concluded. Humas UNS

Untal is an adaptive business concept amid the Covid-19 pandemic proposed by Adila Arya Kusumastuti, Daffa Mudia Athifah, and Destya Vinka Wahyu Rosa Adinda in “Tim Angels”. Their business proposal titled “The Application of Website as Digital Invitation Production Process in the Millennials Era” was developed based on three backgrounds, including the number of firms that perform innovation through the use of information technology and the internet.

“We also see the number of benefits for firms that utilize information technology advancement and the internet. Particularly, due to the Covid-19 pandemic that brings limitations to people activities,” Daffa Mudia Athifah explained.

Under the supervision of Yudho Yudhanto S. Kom., M. Kom, Tim Angels saw the opportunity of digital invitation business and considered the benefits of such invitation. “Such as reducing outdoor activities. With the digital invitation, the distribution is easier because it can be done through email, link, or WhatsApp,” Daffa Mudia Athifah said.

The preparation for Untal took two weeks because the team started from finding references and shared the proposal works among team members. The preparation process was held fully online because each member lives in a different city. The team also conducted the preparation during their final semester exam, which according to Daffa Mudia Athifah, did not affect their seriousness in preparing the proposal.

“We need to manage our time to work on the proposal while doing assignments and preparation for final semester examination. We need to manage our focus,” she said.

With their achievement, Daffa Mudia Athifah stated that Tim Angels is preparing to put their proposal into real business to help community members preparing digital invitations through their website. “After winning this (competition), we hope to develop our digital invitation website design further so that other people could feel the benefits,” she concluded. The two students are Sheilla Fitri Honey and Nuurin Aulia from the Visual Communication Design Study Program (DKV) class of 2019. The whole competition was held virtually. To the uns.ac.id team, Sheila admits that they are happy and they do not expect such a result. She reveals that they need three days to formulate the idea. “We are happy and do not expect this result. The story formulation took 2-3 days, followed by sketching. The final coloring stage was done by Nuurin, who need many references,” Sheilla explains on Saturday (12/6/2021).

Sheilla was once felt inferior during the technical meeting because, according to her, the other participants look more experienced. “During the technical meeting and QnA session with the judges, the other participants look more experienced. So we feel inferior. However, Nuurin and I continue our struggle and do our best even with just two weeks left,” Sheilla reveals. Even with inferiority, the team finally was announced as the 3^rd winner last Monday (31/5/2021).

In this competition, they tell a story about a child called Nilas who is suspicious of her neighbor called Mbok Darmi. Mbok Darmi often makes and sells suspicious potions. Then, Nilas visits Mbok Darmi house to ask about the potions. Finally, she knows that the potions are ‘Jamu,’ a healthy beverage made from herbs and spices, which has many benefits.

The team wants to educate children to not having any negative suspicions of others and to raise awareness to preserve spices in Indonesia. “In this story, we want to teach children not to be prejudiced and to raise awareness to preserve spices,” Sheilla explains.

Further, they hope to expand their network in the illustration field. “We hope to strengthen our network in the illustrations field,” they wished. Humas UNS

In the competition that raises the theme of “Ramadan amid the pandemic”, Kusnul invited her fellows to continue improving their faith and piety amid the pandemic by applying health protocols. In addition, Kusnul mentioned that the limitation imposed during the pandemic should not stop Muslims from performing their activities. “That’s why in my speech, I invited my fellows to use their time wisely amid the pandemic to improve their faith and piety,” she explained to uns.ac.id on Sunday (23/5/2021).

The second-semester student also invited her friends to study and apply their knowledge in her speech. Sharing knowledge is a part of da’wah in Islam. She added that a pandemic is not a barrier but a test of faith for pious people. “Hopefully, with our efforts and wishes, Allah will put an end to the Covid-19 pandemic,” she said.

In the competition held on 10 May 2021, Kusnul recorded herself giving a speech and uploaded the recording to Instagram for assessment. She is delighted with the result after participating in dozens of competitions with unsatisfactory results. She hopes that this achievement will be a starting point for her to share the spirit of kindness.

“I also hope that UNS could encourage and support students to continue achieving excellence,” she concluded. Humas UNS
