UNS — Faculty of Teacher Training and Educational (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held an International Seminar and Indonesia Cultural Performance entitled Reflection on Indonesian Language Program for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) on Five Continents. This event was held virtually through Zoom Meeting on Saturday (28/5/2022). The event is part of activities series to enliven the 46th UNS Anniversary Celebration. Aside from the seminars and cultural performances, this event also included two books launching, “About Indonesia” by Yale University Students, USA, and a Javanese culture-based BIPA course book entitled “Jateng Gayeng.”

Representing the Rector of UNS, the UNS Vice-Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ahmad Yunus, M.S., welcomed the participants of this international seminar and performance. “This event will be our joint effort in internationalizing Bahasa Indonesia’s existence to be one of the ASEAN official languages. Thank you to the invited speakers and participants who attended today’s morning seminar. This is an excellent event because aside from the seminars, there will be cultural performances to promote Indonesian culture globally,” explained Prof. Yunus.

Following Prof. Yunus’ remarks, the Dean of FKIP UNS, Dr. Mardiyana, M.Si, who at the same time opened this international seminar and cultural performance states that, “I hope this event can be an annual event as our effort to internationalize Bahasa Indonesia. For instance, establishing cooperation with various countries that share similar concerns about Bahasa Indonesia.

The Chair for the 46th UNS Anniversary, Prof. Dr. Reviono, dr., Sp.P(K), also expressed great appreciation for the organization of this event because it shows tangible evidence of UNS internationalization. He also hopes all participants can participate until the end of the event and receive abundant benefits from the knowledge gained through this seminar. After Prof. Reviono’s speech, the Chairman of the BIPA UNS Teaching and Research Committee, Dr. Kundharu Saddhono, SS, M.Hum., delivers a welcome speech.

Moreover, this event is part of UNS Key Performance Indicators (IKU) implementation through the BIPA program, hence, it will become UNS’ icon as a driver of BIPA in Indonesia,” said Dr. Kundharu.

Another welcome speech was delivered by the Head of Balai Bahasa Provinsi Jawa Tengah, Dr. Ganjar Harimansyah, who expressed his joy for this event’s implementation.
In his remark, Prof. Jamal highly appreciates the committee for initiating this Art and Culture Stage Performance since it is aligned with the UNS vision and mission to respond to Indonesian culture-based knowledge and technology. “I really appreciate the committee effort for initiating and reviving an atmosphere that was absent for more than 2 (two) years due to the pandemic, and tonight we managed to organize a performance that involved all colleagues, from faculties, institutions, units to explore the potential of art and culture,” he said.

Prof. Jamal was always hopeful for cultural preservation at UNS through the Pantun delivered as a conclusion of his welcoming speech. “Playing water on the lake’s edge,” he said while joking with his wife and son. “Congratulations and good luck for UNS Art and Culture Performances. May art and culture at UNS remain sustainable,” said Prof. Jamal.

The Chairperson for the 46th UNS Anniversary, Prof. Dr. Reviono, dr., Sp.P(K)., said that this Performing Arts and Culture Stage is a new series of events in the history of the UNS Anniversary Celebration starting this year. Following Prof. Jamal’s initiative, Prof. Reviono also prepared a Pantun, which implies that UNS existence has been taken into account at the national level, without forgetting its national culture. “Year after year, it’s impossible to hide age. Despite being a World Class University, UNS has not forgotten Indonesian culture,” he said.

At this Art and Culture Performance Stage, UPT Public Relations and Media UNS performed the UNS Jingle and ‘Bersama Untuk UNS’ song. A song composed of a mixture of several regional songs, where the original lyrics were adjusted to UNS uniqueness, inspired by lecturers and Postgraduate staff according to the competition they participated in.

The said dance told the story of a soldier who is ready to fight with extraordinary passion through his love to protect each other, for the two of them reunite under any result. In between performances, Prof. Jamal and 2 (two) Professors, namely Prof. Dr. Sahid Teguh Widodo, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D., and the Director of UNS Hospital, Prof. Dr. Hartono, M.Si., showed off their golden voice through Keroncong music.

They were Prof. Wayan Arka from Australian National University and Dr. FX. Sawardi, M. Hum from FIB UNS. Prof. Wayan discussed the linguistic complexity of Bahasa Indonesia affected by time dimension, marked with the use of word ‘mau’ (want/will).

“The word “mau” in Bahasa Indonesia is complex from functional to structure,” Prof. Wayan stated in his Categorial Gradience, Grammaticalisation and Prototype Theory in Linguistic: Evidence from Indonesia Languages presentation.

The next speaker, the head of Master Program in Linguistics FIB, Dr. FX. Sawardi discussed the Language Richness and Linguistics Development in Indonesia. Dr. FX. Sawardi stated that Bahasa Indonesia has 718 languages, according to a study conducted by Badan Bahasa (Language Board) in 2019.

The second day of the seminar was spent with two speakers from foreign universities—Prof. Frank Dhont from the National Cheng Kung University and Prof. Norhayati Ab. Rahman, from Akademi Pengkajian Melayu (APM), University of Malaya (UM). Prof. Frank Dhont discussed the power to maintain and protect culture and gave an example of Semar’s character that does not exist in the original story. “But in Indonesia, Semar becomes a character that is close to the Javanese culture that brings beauty and power of a culture,” he added.

The closing discussion from Prof. Norhayati Ab. Rahman focused on the collaboration in language and literature among Southeast Asian countries and a discussion on several notable Indonesian writers, such as Rendra, Sapardi Djoko Damono, and Ajib Rosidi.

The seminar meets the expectation of Prof. Warto, the Dean of FIB UNS, who hoped that the seminar could run excitingly. Participants took turns to discuss with the invited speakers.

“I hope this international seminar could bring a warm discussion, sharing of experiences on linguistics, and improve the knowledge continuously,” Prof. Warto stated. Humas UNS

UNS — Olivia Firdaus, a student of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (FMIPA) in Environmental Science Program, was elected as Putri Solo in Putra Putri Solo Election (PPS) 2021. The event was held hybrid from the Open Stage Taman Balekambang on Saturday (13/11/2021).

Olivia – her nickname – is a representative from Jebres Subdistrict. In her 20 years of age, she collected her courage to participate in the competition, an event she has longed for a long time. To the board of juries, the fifth-semester student shared her wish to encourage the young generation to preserve the Javanese culture.

“I want to have a real contribution to the development of arts, culture, and tourism in Solo,” she said.

In an interview with the uns.ac.id team, Olivia said that her willingness was inspired by the Solo slogan, Solo the Spirit of Java. She thinks the slogan means that Solo is the center for Javanese tourism, and awareness to preserve the nation’s wealth is vital.

“If we, who live in Solo, do not understand Javanese culture, how it develops, how it survives amid the changing times,” Olivia stated.

In achieving the title, Olivia needed to compete with 114 other participants in Putra and Putri categories. She won over 90 participants through written tests and interviews that consisted of public speaking tests and interests and talents. In the final round, the finalists were required to participate in the briefing before participating in the Grand Final that was attended by the Mayor of Surakarta, Gibran Rakabuming.

During the briefing, Olivia was highly interested in the series of training. She felt lucky to have the opportunity to learn Javanese culture in-depth, leaving a deep impression for her, especially when she learned about Javanese culture she did not know before. “About tourism as well. So, it is easier to learn,” she shared.

As a prize for believing in God’s help, Olivia was elected as Putri Solo 2021 and received rewards directly from Gibran and his wife, Selvi Ananda Putri. Olivia said that she was surprised with the result and that she was despondent in the mid of the briefing and wanted to drop out of the program. “Thank God, (I) had the strength and got elected as Putri Solo 2021,” she added. Olivia stated that she is ready to make a real contribution in introducing Solo culture and tourism and hoped that her involvement could encourage the youth to learn and care for their culture because the young generation is the spearhead for cultural conservation. “To care and have a sense of belonging towards the culture in Solo, especially Javanese culture, because if not us, who else will (conserve the culture)?”

Olivia also wants to get involved in the promotion of the tourism sector because the opportunity is something she must be thankful for, and that she needs to work harder in solving challenges she has in the future. She also reminded that people need to work on their dream, but God will decide the results. “We do our best; the rest is God’s works,” she concluded. Humas UNS

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta was selected as the host of Indonesian Flying Robot Contest (KRTI) on 15-20 November 2021. UNS was directly selected by the Center for National Achievement (Pupresnas) and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemdikbudristek) RI.

As host, UNS is optimistic about winning the Grand Champion in the competition as shared by the Chief Organizing Committee KRTI 2021 Prof. Dody Ariawan and Supervisor for KRTI UNS 2021 Team Dr. Nurul Muhayat. “In each division, hopefully, students could win, besides there are several categories that we could win as well, such as best design. And the target is clear, Grand Champion,” Dr. Nurul Muhayat stated.

Based on the qualification results, Bengawan UV UNS passed four teams into the final round: Shankara in Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) division, Ernesti in Racing Plane (RP) division, Bamantara in Fixed- Wing (FW) division, and Prigi Baswara in Technology Development (TD) division. In VTOL division, the flying robot should be able to send aids to high rise buildings; in FW division, robots are required to fly up to 55 kilometers, RP division demands automatic fly of robot in a shape of 8 (eight), and in TD division, robots are demanded to conduct electricity to certain parts. Dr. Nurul added that UNS teams have prepared for enough team, and all teams are all out to win some achievements.

Since KRTI 2021 was held fully online, UNS teams have prepared several locations for the contest. VTOL division will be held in the Sport Center UNS, FW division in Polokarto, Sukoharjo, RP division in Dukuh, Mojolaban, and TD division in ringroad field Surakarta. Dr. Nurul explained that each team would broadcast their activities from their distinct location, and eight students would work together in each division.

In his press release, Prof. Dody explained that KRTI would be held fully online, and each team would be observed through distance observation. UNS sent out seven juries assisted by the assistant and three Liaison officers (LO) to assess each division. To support the observation, a centralized observation with three blocks was prepared in G.P.H. Haryo Mataram Auditorium. Block I for VTOL and FW division, block II for TD division, and block III for RP division.

“We will install a big screen to monitor all team’s activities. So, you could imagine how many people work in this event,” Prof. Dody stated.

UNS — The Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) for International Cooperation and Services (International Office), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, held a Webinar in Intercultural Communication Strategy to support the development of the UNS international student service system. This webinar aims to provide insight and improve UNS academic support staff competencies in providing academic and non-academic services to international students.

The number of international students enrolled at a university contributes 5% in the assessment indicators of the QS World University Ranking. As one of the universities included in the First National Cluster, UNS is mandated to achieve World Class University predicate, which can be achieved through the QS benchmarks.

During the workshop on Thursday (28/10/2021), the Head of the UNS International Office, Rino Ardhian N., Ph.D., said that international students enrolled at UNS show a significant increase. “Registration for the 2020 academic year recorded a total of 105 applicants. However, the number is decreased in 2021 to 52 applicants because of the pandemic period, while the 2022 academic year increased to 241 applicants from 41 countries. This situation will be a challenge for the academic support staff to provide the best services for international students,” he said in his speech.

The first session of this workshop invites Marieti Debyora Gardiana, S.Si., as the Sub Coordinator of Administration for the UNS International Office. Gardiana presented her research on intercultural communication strategies for the development of the UNS international student service system. The research was conducted using non-APBN funding through the UNS Research and Community Service (P2M) program managed by the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) UNS.

“The idea for this research started from a discussion with Mr. Sulistiyo Joko Wahyudi, ST., along with the other UNS International Office staff colleagues, regarding the challenges in intercultural communication and the strategies that have been implemented to overcome them,” explained Gardiana.

The research, whose team consisted of Rino Ardhian Nugroho, Ph.D., and Albert Muhammad Isrun Naini, Ph.D., was conducted through in-depth interviews with 12 International Affairs Office staff from 5 (five) universities.

The second session was a talk show with three invited speakers, namely, Abdul Rohman, S. Hum., a staff from Diponegoro University International Office; Anas Fauzi, S.Pd., a Staff for Foreign Cooperation in Universitas Negeri Semarang, and Erna Mustikasari, MIKom., the manager of the Student Development Partnership (KNB) scholarship for the UNS Graduate School.

Led by Sulistiyo Joko Wahyudi, ST., the invited speakers share practical tips and tricks in communicating with international students according to their respective experiences. The workshop was attended by approximately 115 participants and was concluded with the distribution of a book entitled ‘Be Curious and Act Globally’ by Yudi Sastroredjo. Humas UNS
