In collaborating with Sociology Program Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Student Association in Sociology (Himasos) FISIP UNS held Webinar National on Design and Writing ‘Build the Personal Branding in the Digital Era.’ The webinar was held online through the Zoom Cloud Meeting application on Saturday (4/12/2021) with two speakers: Content Creator Muh. Azhar Suadi and Daya Dimensi Assessor Armando Radityawan.

The speakers were invited to share their knowledge and experiences in design and writing and its importance in building personal branding in the digital era, in line with the objective of this webinar to improve participants’ knowledge in graphic design as an instrument to build persona branding amid the digital era.

“Building personal branding is highly recommended in the social media because it becomes portfolio and value for ourselves,” Muh. Azhar Suadi stated.

Muh. Azhar Suadi added that building personal branding through social media could start from creating interesting content, such as tips creating a design in a short video in line with the increasing attention provided to the short video sharing platform, such Tik Tok, reels, and YouTube Shorts.

Although the design is crucial in building personal branding in social media, Muh. Azhar Suadi reminded participants to be aware and not get stuck on ‘interesting content’ because graphic design is different from a content creator who has the duty to prepare a concept for their content. He also emphasized that participants do not need to create ‘wow’ content but rather focus on the content of their work. However, creating interesting and exciting headlines is also vital in capturing people’s attention.

“The first three seconds are crucial because it decides people interest to stop scrolling. It is a loss if we make a ‘wow’ content, but it isn’t interesting,” Muh. Azhar Suadi explained.

The webinar also equips its participant with tips for building personal branding through Curriculum Vitae (CV) shared by the second speaker, Armando Radityawan.

The National Webinar that started at 09.00 am local time received positive responses from participants. The enthusiasm increased when the moderator, Vina Damayanti, led the questions-and-answers session. Participants sent their questions in turns and created interesting discussions between the participants and speakers. Humas UNS

SEMIOTICS invited six main speakers: Prof. Dr. Juliane House (Hamburg University, Germany), Dr. Sharifah Fazliyaton Shaik Ismail (Universiti Utara Malaysia), Prof. Dr. E. Aminuddin Aziz (Chief of Badan Bahasa – Language Office), Dr. Sugeng Hariyanto, (Politeknik Negeri Malang), Dr. Henry Yustanto (UNS), and Dr. Dyah Ayu Nila Khrisna (UNS). Several supporting speakers will also share their researches in this international seminar.

SEMIOTICS was opened on Tuesday (12/10/2021) and was attended by Vice-Dean for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs FIB UNS, Prof. Tri Wiratno, and the Head of Master Program in Linguistics, Dr. Fx. Sawardi. In his opening remark, Dr. Fx. Sawardi stated that the theme for this international seminar was ‘language and translation in the digital era: what is the future?’ is linear with the current condition considering many life aspects are shifting into digital platform. Digital communication is also considered normal and often brings misunderstanding due to the lack of physical contact.

“There are UU ITE, electronic dictionary, and google translate that (we) need to check the acceptability. In facing these changes, we invited speakers to discuss linguistic issues in the digital world—linguistic analysis using the digital method,” Dr. Fx. Sawardi explained.

Prof. Tri Wiratno greatly appreciated the seminar and hoped that similar events could be conducted annually.

“Hopefully, this event inspires (us) to develop ourselves and explore the seminar theme. This seminar should become a means of knowledge exchange, a means of academic dialogue so that in the future (we) could hold similar seminars,” Prof. Tri stated in his opening remark and opening SEMIOTICS.

Two main speakers delivered their materials on the first day: Prof. Dr. E. Aminuddin Aziz and Dr. Henry Yustanto, with Dr. Wiwik Yulianti as the moderator of the session. Four other main speakers delivered their materials on the second day, followed by the presentations from other supporting presenters. Humas UNS
