Several UNS officials attended the event. Among them were the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si.; the Vice Rector for Academic and Research Affairs, Prof. Dr. Fitria Rahmawati, S.Si., M.Si.; the Vice Rector for Student and Alumni Affairs, Prof. Ir. Dody Ariawan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D.; and the Vice Rector for Planning, Cooperation, Internationalization, and Information, Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D. The event was also attended by several Deans from various faculties at UNS and the Director of UNS Hospital, Prof. Dr. Pamudji Utomo, dr., Sp.OT(K)., and his team.

Opening Remarks from Prof. Hartono

The Rector of UNS, Prof. Hartono, officially opened the event. In his remarks, Prof. Hartono expressed his hope that the event would bring blessings and inspire kindness during the celebration of the 49th Anniversary of UNS. He emphasized that this initiative is a concrete form of community service that UNS organizes annually. Over the past few years, this mass circumcision has been organized regularly by DWP UNS in collaboration with the UNS Anniversary Committee.

Furthermore, Prof. Hartono highlighted that the activity was about providing health services and extending warmth and care to the community. He emphasized that the sense of togetherness created through this event reflects the values of the UNS family.

“Through this activity, we are not only providing medical services but also offering warmth, care, and a spirit of togetherness as part of the UNS family,” stated Prof. Hartono in his remarks.

He expressed his deep appreciation to DWP UNS for their initiative and dedication in conducting this event. He also acknowledged the best support provided by UNS Hospital in terms of facilities, medical personnel, and quality service. In addition, he thanked the UNS Anniversary Committee and the sponsors for their essential contributions in making the event a success.

Prof. Hartono also appreciated the participating children who courageously took part in the mass circumcision. He hoped that the program would benefit their health and future positively. “You are all brave and amazing children. May the circumcision process run smoothly and bring good health and blessings for your future,” he added.

Following his remarks, Prof. Hartono officially opened the Mass Circumcision event. He concluded his remarks by expressing his hope that the event would bring significant benefits and be a meaningful charitable act for everyone involved. He also wished for this initiative to strengthen the bond between UNS and the surrounding community.

Bringing Direct Health Benefits to the Community

UNS chose this mass circumcision as a form of community service because of its direct and tangible benefits to the public. This year, the event targeted 100 participants, with an additional quota of 10 for late registrants. Experienced surgical doctors conducted the circumcision procedures. Participants also will get free post-operative follow-up services at UNS Hospital. In addition to medical care, the children received various support items, including sarongs, batok trousers, kopiah (peci), pocket money, snacks, and meals. Through this activity, UNS hopes to strengthen its relationship with the community while making a real contribution to public health.

The circumcision method used was circumcision with tissue glue. This is a modern technique that closes the wound using skin adhesive. This method is safe, effective, and helps prevent infection. This method complies with religious guidelines and is also medically recommended. The same procedure was applied to regular patients, ensuring consistent quality of service.

Participants came from various regions within Solo Raya and were required to be at least 10 years old. Compared to previous years, UNS improved this year’s registration system for a faster and more efficient process. Despite this, the number of participants was still limited, as previous experiences showed that larger numbers led to extended completion times into the late afternoon. Therefore, the quality of service continues to be enhanced to ensure the procedure remains optimal and comfortable for all participants.

This mass circumcision aligns with the third Sustainable Development Goal, which promotes good health and well-being. At the same time, it reflects UNS’s commitment to the university community and the wider public. As an annual initiative with a positive impact, this program is expected to continue with ongoing improvements and increased effectiveness.

Forty DWP UNS members started their excursion by going around the palace using a traditional horse-drawn carriage, Andong. The group then dropped in Keraton Surakarta Hadiningrat Museum and continued their visit to the museum of one of Surakarta’s royal palaces.

The Chairwoman of DWP UNS, Budhi Widjajanti Jamal Wiwoho, accompanied by Andam Dewi Ahmad Yunus, Lis Hartati Bandi, Arlin Kuncoro Diharjo, and Nanik Murti Sajidan stated that the program was named “Sehari Di Baluwarti” (a day in Baluwarti: name of the village surrounding Kasunan Palace Surakarta).

“Alhamdulillah, we could meet with DWP UNS managers. This time in a different program, visiting historical places in Solo. But because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the visit was implemented under a strict health protocol,” Budhi explained.

Through the program, Budhi hoped that DWP UNS managers could learn the history of Keraton Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat. “We took the managers to go around the museum, to learn about what is in the museum, then the history of the palace, and other knowledge. Thus, this is a part of protecting Javanese culture applied by DWP UNS,” Budhi explained.

After visiting Keraton Surakarta Hadiningrat Museum, the program was followed by a coordination meeting among the managers in Ndalem Kinasih Baluwarti Surakarta. The meeting included a material presentation from Arlin Kuncoro Diharjo on the process of making traditional beverages, such as kunyit asem, gula asem, and beras kencur.

“There was also a performance of singing traditional songs. Children games. Today, everything is traditional to remind us of the importance of protecting Javanese culture, and hopefully, this program could benefit all of us,” Budhi stated. Humas UNS

Vice-Chairwoman in Education DWP UNS, Arlin Kuncoro Diharjo, represented the Chairwoman of DWP UNS, Budhi Widjajanti Jamal Wiwoho, mentioned in her opening remark that this workshop was held to commemorate the DWP UNS Anniversary.

“Alhamdulillah, this workshop could be realized. This theme is applicable because it can be applied directly by DWP members. This time the members will make candles and soap from used cooking oil,” Arlin Kuncoro explained.

Arlin added that used cooking oil had not been utilized fully despite the potential of using the waste to create diverse creations. She also mentioned that this utilization could support family economic resilience.

Arlin Kuncoro hoped that this workshop could inspire Indonesian women to process their used cooking oil. “Never throw them away because they can be processed and have economic values,” she added.

DWP UNS invited two speakers to the workshop. Dr. Fajar S Handayani, S.T, M.T., a faculty member of Faculty of Engineering (FT) UNS, and Rosiena Retno S, S.T. Rosiena asked the participants not to throw their used cooking oil into the drain or soil because it could contaminate the environment. “For people who do not want to make creation from used cooking oil, it could be sold to the collector. But choose trusted collector so that your used cooking oil is not used for bad purposes,” Rosiena said.

In this workshop, Rosiena invited the DWP UNS members to make soap from used cooking oil with ingredients: 500 grams used cooking oil, NAOH 67 grams, distilled water 190 gram, and perfume or essential oil. The participants were enthusiastic to follow the workshop. Humas UNS

The Chief of DWP UNS, Budhi Widjayanti Jamal Wiwoho, stated that there are important days in October, including National Batik Day. “To commemorate the day, DWP UNS wants to learn and expand their knowledge on batik. Thus, in Batik Cempaka Showroom, our members learned to make batik and acquire knowledge on the types of batiks,” Budhi Widjayanti Jamal Wiwoho explained.

Thirty members of DWP UNS were enthusiastic about participating in the training. Some of them selected to make batik on hand-held fans, and some selected to make batik on praying rug. “So there are two models, hand-held fan and praying rug. They were cut by Batik Cempaka Showroom with hand-held fan model and praying rug size,” Budhi Widjayanti Jamal Wiwoho added.

The Vice-Chairman for Educational Affairs DWP UNS, Arlin Kuncoro Diharjo, added that before starting making the batik, DWP UNS members received an explanation on the history of Laweyan and batik industry from Dhany Arifmawan Wibowo, S.E., as the son of Graha Batik Cempaka owner.

“After the explanation on the history of batik industry, Graha Batik Cempaka owner, Ibu Budi Susilo trained DWP UNS members to make batik. Alhamdulillah, they are happy,”  Arlin Kuncoro Diharjo stated. Humas UNS
