UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a Halalbihalal gathering on Tuesday (8/4/2025) to celebrate Eid al-Fitr 1446 H. The event took place at the G.P.H. Haryo Mataram Auditorium under the theme “Strengthening Friendship, Accelerating Achievements.”

Strengthening Unity and Spiritual Bonds

The Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., and the entire UNS academic community attended the gathering. The event featured a religious sermon delivered by K.H. Muhammad Jadul Maula. He is the Chairman of the Indonesian Muslim Arts and Culture Institute under Nahdlatul Ulama (Lesbumi NU).

In his opening remarks, Prof. Hartono emphasized the importance of Halalbihalal as a moment to forgive, reconnect, and strengthen relationships.

“On behalf of myself, my family, and the UNS leadership, I extend our heartfelt greetings. Taqabbalallahu minna wa minkum, taqabbal yaa kariim. Happy Eid al-Fitr 1446 H. Minal aidzin wal faidzin. Please forgive any physical and emotional wrongdoings,” he said.

He continued by underlining that the gathering was more than a tradition. It was a spiritual reminder of UNS’s values in fostering faith, knowledge, and character.

UNS Commitment Toward Excellence

Prof. Hartono reflected on the holy occasion. He reiterated the university’s commitment to being a space that nurtures both academic excellence and personal character.

“In this spirit of unity and grace, UNS reaffirms its mission. The university is committed to building not only knowledge but also integrity and civilization. We must root every step we take—whether in education, research, or community service—in honesty and togetherness,” he added.

Prof. Hartono also shared his appreciation for the university’s achievements. These included advancements in accreditation, scientific publications, international partnerships, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

“These accomplishments stem from our shared spirit of collaboration. Let’s continue this unity to face global challenges, digital transformation, and socio-economic issues. Together, we are strong. Also, this unity is the foundation of UNS’s transformation into a world-class university with national and humanistic values,” he concluded.

The Meaning Behind Halalbihalal

In his sermon, K.H. Muhammad Jadul Maula reminded attendees about the sacred meaning of Halalbihalal. He encouraged everyone to cleanse their hearts and let go of grudges.

“On this noble occasion, let us all sincerely forgive others and purify ourselves,” he said.

He also explained the deeper cultural symbolism behind the Halalbihalal tradition.

“Halalbihalal means reconciliation and forgiveness. Ketupat, a traditional Eid food, symbolizes purity. Its shape represents the four cardinal directions and a central point. This design reminds us to return to our true selves after Ramadan,” K.H. Jadul Maula explained. The Halalbihalal gathering at UNS was not just a ceremonial event. It was a reflection of the university’s values of unity, forgiveness, and progress. As UNS continues its journey toward becoming a world-class institution, moments like these play a vital role. They strengthen the bonds that hold its academic community together.

UNS — The Eid al-Fitr 1443 Hijri was celebrated almost a week ago. However, the atmosphere of the celebration of the Muslim feast still enchants the people in Indonesia. One of them is the tradition of hospitality performed to parents, relatives, friends, and neighbors, including colleagues, leaders, or superiors in an institution. This tradition was also preserved by the leaders of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta. On Saturday (7/5/2022), the leaders of UNS visited the residence of the Former UNS Rectors for the period 2003-2011, Prof. Dr. Muchammad Syamsulhadi, dr., Sp.KJ(K) and the UNS Rector for the 2011-2019 period, Prof. Dr. Ravik Karsidi, M.S.

The UNS entourage is led by the current Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, along with all the UNS Vice-Rectors, namely Prof. Dr. Ahmad Yunus (Vice-Rector for Academic and Student Affairs), Prof. Dr. Bandi (Vice-Rector for General and Human Resources Affairs), Prof. Dr. Kuncoro Diharjo (Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Affairs), and Prof. Dr. rer.nat. Sajidan (Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs). The entourage also included Faculty Deans, representatives of the Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) UNS, and several Directors at UNS.

The entourage departed from UNS Inn at 07.30 WIB and reached the residence of the 6th UNS Rector at 09.05 WIB in Klaten. Upon their arrival, the group was welcomed by Mrs. Syamsulhadi (dr. Maria Farida) and her daughter. Additionally, Dr. Hidayat Hendarsyah, Prof. Syamsulhadi’s son-in-law and also FEB UNS lecturer, also welcomed the leaders of UNS. Although he is not in good health, cheerfulness cannot be wiped from Prof. Syamsulhadi. Occasionally he wiped tears happily while stammering because he did not expect the leaders of the UNS to visit his residence. Moreover, not only the Rector and Vice-Rector who came to visit his house but also other official too. Prof. Jamal hopes that this fellowship can be a remedy for Prof. Syamsulhadi to quickly recovered.

After a short visit to Prof. Syamsulhadi and his family, the group continued their journey to the residence of Prof. Ravik Karsidi. The group arrived at the residence of Prof. Ravik at exactly 12: 00 WIB. They were greeted in person by Prof. Ravik and Mrs. Handayani Ravik Karsidi, alongside their sons and daughters. “I am very pleased to welcome the visitation from the UNS leaders. I am also proud of the progressing development of UNS, both nationally and internationally,” said Prof. Ravik. Humas UNS

UNS — Ahead of Eid al-Fitr, people in Indonesia are flocking to buy new clothes. This behavior has become part of the Eid tradition in Indonesia. Nevertheless, this tradition secretly presents a threat to the environment.

The new clothing on the feast day is one of the symbols of victory for the Indonesian people. The symbolism encourages people to buy new clothes before Eid. Not only clothes, but the community also buys Mukena (praying robe) and Sarong to wear during Eid. This increase in clothing purchases certainly presents a huge advantage for traders. The turnover obtained by clothing merchants in times like these can increase up to twice as much. However, such tradition has the potential to harm the environment.

As the demand for clothing increases, the production units upstream will use more raw material resources. This situation will pose a threat, namely an increase in textile waste. Meanwhile, the downstream or the sales unit will experience a large overflow of second-hand clothes. These second-hand clothes need extra care to be resold. This extra treatment can be a cleansing process that requires a considerable amount of detergent, which can increase the level of fashion waste in the environment.

The environmentalist of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Prof. Dr. Prabang Setyono, M.Si., responded to this phenomenon. According to Prof. Prabang, the symbolic value behind the new clothing culture in the Eid celebration has a positive meaning. In practice, however, it must be balanced with a wise attitude in dressing patterns. “The culture actually has a good symbolic meaning, only the physical meaning does not have to involve new clothes, instead of good condition clothes that have been stored for a long time, yet have not been worn or rarely worn,” said Prof. Prabang, Saturday (30/4/2022).

I Have Purchased New Clothes, What Should I Do?

For people who have bought new clothes, Prof. Prabang provides several solutions to solve this concern. The professor in Environmental Pollution science advises the community to use a decent-clothing circular system. This system worked as the distribution of clothes that are considered too small or no longer trendy but still decent for people in need. Instead of discarding, this circular distribution system will not generate textile material waste from unused clothing. “For those who have bought clothes, they can distribute their old clothes to a business unit or shelter for decent clothes suitable for donation to other users, hence promoting sustainable clothing cycle,” added the Head of the Environmental Science Undergraduate Program UNS.

Meanwhile, a circular economy system must be applied to clothes that are no longer decent to wear and is considered garbage. The clothes can be sold to producers that use waste fabric as their raw material. Pieces of clothing can be converted into fillets or household property fillers such as sofa chairs and cushions.
