In his opening remark, the Chief of PPLH LPPM UNS, Dr. Suryanto, stated that as a research center in environmental science, PPLH LPPM UNS held the FGD to commemorate Environment Day, which participated by all research groups in PPLH UNS. The center also educated the community to raise awareness in maintaining environmental safety.

“PPLH LPPM continue to approach the community and village government through discussion. This effort aims to combine community’s local wisdom and UNS scientific knowledge,” Dr. Suryanto explained.

Dr. Suryanto hoped that the FGD would increase community awareness to reduce the risk of natural disasters, for example, by preventing over-exploitation of nature. “To improve community awareness, we need to continue building it. The community who are aware of the matter is expected to educate the future generation,” Dr. Suryanto added.

Setya Nugraha, S.Si., M.Si., delivered material on “The Sustainable Land Usage based on Environmental Risk and Community’s Role in Disaster Mitigation” in the FGD. The Chief of LPPM UNS, Prof. Okid Parama Astirin, who also attended the event, hoped that the FGD would enrich the community’s knowledge on environmental safety.

The participant of the FGD is the villagers of Berjo village, Ngargoyoso Subdistrict Head, Environmental Office of Karanganyar, and Agricultural Office of Karanganyar. The event was held under a strict health protocol. PPLH UNS also planted Cemara Pecut (Cupressus sempervirensL.) and stocked the fish in Telaga Madirda as their efforts to maintain the environment.
