To uns.ac.id, Putri explained the description of the essay entitled “Innovation Microneedle Patch from Nano Extract of Eggflower (Clitoria ternatea) as a Therapy for Patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus.” This team proposed an invention entitled ‘Purple Patch’ that provides a concept and scientific evidence for complementary therapy for people with type II Diabetes Mellitus (DM). The initiative aims to bring effective, efficient, and minimal side effects innovations for Type II DM complementary therapy. This idea aims to prevent the rapid increase in diabetes prevalence following Indonesia’s demographic bonus in 2045. Based on the scientific posters published by the team, the proposed ‘Purple Patch’ is expected to increase the compliance of type II DM patients in performing therapy. The Purple Patch aims to help reduce the prevalence rate of type II DM patients in Indonesia. “This essay discusses the problem caused by a large prevalence of DM patients in Indonesia. Throughout the essay, we managed to connect the current problem with the forecast on the surging DM prevalence in the 2045 Gold Indonesia,” said Putri on Monday (11/4/2022).

On the same occasion, Tegar Ramadani also explained the description of his essay. The essay discusses the potential usage of agricultural waste as renewable energy in seven regencies in East Java known as the ‘Tapal Kuda (Horseshoe)’ Region (Banyuwangi, Bondowoso, Jember, Lumajang, Pasurun, Situbondo and Probolinggo). Through this idea, he examined the problem of petroleum reserves that are increasingly depleted, which is directly proportional to the potential of tobacco bar waste and cocoa bark waste in the region. He then examined waste-based bioethanol potential as a climate change solution.

Mandalika Essay Competition is an essay writing competition organized by Rizki Prima Sentosa Foundation. This competition has successfully garnered attention from a total of 348 participants that were further selected into 22 finalists. Aside from the essay competition, the event also organized a community service program involving finalists in volunteering activities and field trips in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). The event lasted for 3 (three) days, from March 25-27, 2022.

Putri and her friends claimed to be thrilled with their achievements in this competition. Although they did not get 1st place, they are still proud to be at the Top-3). Through the essay written, they managed to eliminate hundreds of contenders. “We hope that after attending MEC, we can be more productive and contribute more work. Through this work, we hope that our initiative can establish innovation and further develop in collaboration with health experts and researchers, especially in the medical and pharmaceuticals field, as an effort to handle DM cases in Indonesia,” said Putri. When contacted by the uns.ac.id team on Tuesday (28/12/2021), Apri admitted that he was happy with his achievements. “I felt happy at that time, and I also did not expect this outcome because I had written the essay for a long time, and coincidentally, the theme matched the competition,” explained Apri.

In his writings, Apri chooses a theme familiar to his profession and background as an educator. Now he is a lecturer at Adzkia Padang University. Apri wrote an essay entitled “Freedom to Learn or Learning Freedom.” He highlighted the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka Program (MBKM), a program which the government encourages.

“This essay talks about the Freedom of Learning (Merdeka Belajar), which the government is heavily promoted. Unfortunately, there is actual independence that some Indonesian education practitioners have not yet experienced. There are still gaps in access to education, social discrimination for our special needs friends, and uncertainty about teachers’ financial well-being in Indonesia, especially part-timer teachers,” he explained.

In this championship, the competition is held virtually. In the early stages, Apri sent his essay through Google Drive. After the essay is submitted, the committee checks for plagiarism in the manuscript. Then, the essays that have been checked are submitted to two professors and writers at UNP as the judges. After going through these processes, Apri was declared the second winner in early December.

Apri admitted that he was interested in participating in this competition because he felt that the education field was not doing well. Hence, through his writing, he could voice the issue. “A strong reason that encourages me to take part in the competition is that I know that the education sector is currently not doing well, and this must be our collective responsibility to solve it. Coincidentally, this competition became one of my media outlets where I can talk about this issue, especially during teacher’s day,” said Apri.

In the future, Apri hopes that this achievement can be a trigger for him to do better. “Hopefully, it can be a motivation to accomplishing a better achievement than today’s achievements in the future. This is a trigger for me to do more,” said Apri. Humas UNS

When interviewed on Sunday (4/7/2021), Satrio Fachri Chaniago admits that in this competition, they take on a tourism theme. The vast number of local tourism sectors in Indonesia can be useful to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. Hence, extensive care and promotion both from the government and the general public are needed.

“We discuss the idea of local tourism using a short video to trigger film tourism phenomena. Therefore, after watching the short movie, video, or other media, the public will be interested to visit the location,” he revealed.

Before selected for the presentation stage, the team must first go on the initial selection to determine the top 10 finalists. The finalists, then, must present their idea in front of the judges to choose the best three teams with the highest score.

“The three teams are given a study case to determine the First Place winner, Runner-up 1 and 2. Meanwhile, the other seven teams are joining a Forum Group Discussion (FGD) to compete for the Best Speaker title,” Satrio explained.

The team reveals that they are happy and thankful for the opportunity to compete in the national essay competition. Even more, than they can bring home the Best Speaker title.

“We feel grateful for this opportunity, which allows us to travel to Madura for the final stage, thus expanding our network and experience. Hopefully, we can compete in other challenges and bring home more achievements. To our fellow students, you can join any competition to improve your experiences,” Satrio concluded. Humas UNS
