UNS — Students from the Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta won another national-level achievement. The Historical Science Program student Tegar Ramadhani won 1st place in the Critical Writing Competition (LMK) 2021 with his friend M. Fadillah Rizky Utomo.

LMK 2021 was held by the Student Executive Board (BEM) of Faculty of Engineering Universitas Sriwijaya, Palembang. Various universities send their students to participate in the competition, such as Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Universitas Indonesia (UI), Universitas Sriwijaya, and Universitas Diponegoro, with a total of 50 teams.

To uns.ac.id team, Tegar and Fadillah Rizky stated that they participated in LKM 2021 because they were interested in the theme, renewable energy. “I like the theme, renewable energy. Therefore, I discuss renewable energy topic as an increasingly developed national issue,” Tegar stated.

By participating in the competition, Tegar and Fadillah Rizky also wanted to enrich their experience in the scientific writing field. Their work discussed the installation of a biogas reactor from fish wastes in the coastal area. In their work, Tegar and Fadillah conducted a deep analysis of the economic condition of the coastal community that could be improved with the installation of a biogas reactor.

“Thus, indirectly, the partners in marines and fisheries business that apply this biogas reactor will benefit from (the system),” Tegar explained.

In preparing the essay, Tegar was inspired by his tutor in High School. Tegar and Fadillah Rizky also admitted that they did not expect that they would win 1st place because both of them are students of Historical Science Program FIB UNS and participated for the first time.

“I was surprised because, for the essay, we were in 10th place according to the score. And after the presentation, we won 1st place. Very surprised because we did not have an experience in scientific writing, especially essay,” Tegar stated.

In the future, Tegar and Fadillah Rizky want to explore their potential in writing, especially in renewable energy topics. Tegar also admitted that he wants to collaborate with students from other programs to conduct research that will bring a proud name for UNS at the national and international levels. Humas UNS

The hybrid international seminar was held offline from Ruang seminar Building III FIB UNS and online through the Zoom Cloud Meeting application.

Four speakers were invited to the two-session seminar that received high enthusiasm from FIB students and faculty members, with a total of 90 participants from undergraduate to doctoral programs attending the international seminar.

As reported by fib.uns.ac.id, two Linguistics experts shared their expertise in the first session of the seminar. They were Prof. Wayan Arka from Australian National University and Dr. FX. Sawardi, M. Hum from FIB UNS. Prof. Wayan discussed the linguistic complexity of Bahasa Indonesia affected by time dimension, marked with the use of word ‘mau’ (want/will).

“The word “mau” in Bahasa Indonesia is complex from functional to structure,” Prof. Wayan stated in his Categorial Gradience, Grammaticalisation and Prototype Theory in Linguistic: Evidence from Indonesia Languages presentation.

The next speaker, the head of Master Program in Linguistics FIB, Dr. FX. Sawardi discussed the Language Richness and Linguistics Development in Indonesia. Dr. FX. Sawardi stated that Bahasa Indonesia has 718 languages, according to a study conducted by Badan Bahasa (Language Board) in 2019.

The second day of the seminar was spent with two speakers from foreign universities—Prof. Frank Dhont from the National Cheng Kung University and Prof. Norhayati Ab. Rahman, from Akademi Pengkajian Melayu (APM), University of Malaya (UM). Prof. Frank Dhont discussed the power to maintain and protect culture and gave an example of Semar’s character that does not exist in the original story. “But in Indonesia, Semar becomes a character that is close to the Javanese culture that brings beauty and power of a culture,” he added.

The closing discussion from Prof. Norhayati Ab. Rahman focused on the collaboration in language and literature among Southeast Asian countries and a discussion on several notable Indonesian writers, such as Rendra, Sapardi Djoko Damono, and Ajib Rosidi.

The seminar meets the expectation of Prof. Warto, the Dean of FIB UNS, who hoped that the seminar could run excitingly. Participants took turns to discuss with the invited speakers.

“I hope this international seminar could bring a warm discussion, sharing of experiences on linguistics, and improve the knowledge continuously,” Prof. Warto stated. Humas UNS

UNS — Another national-level achievement was accomplished by Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta student. Salman Al Farisi from the Historical Science Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB) won a national microblog competition. The competition was held by Syiar Kegiatan Islam (SKI) Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (FMIPA) UNS with the Islamic Festival as the theme.

Salman said that in his work, he discussed the relationship between Islam and science because people often contradicted both and stated that religion inhibits science development and vice versa; the development of science contradicts religion, while that is not correct. Islam is a universal value system and perfects that never contradicts science development, science, and technology.

“Both in Islam is a means to achieve development and benefit the mankind,” Salman stated on Saturday (18/12/2021).

He added that scientific culture is upheld in Islam with many Al Quran verses that encourage humans to study. He also explained that Islamic civilization in Abbasiyah time was once the mecca for global science development.

“Although many said it was because the leaders were liberal and progressive, but according to my references, at the time, there was no discourse between Islam and science. Curiosity based on faith brought the Muslim community to achieve their peak of intellectualism as a believer,” he added.

In the competition participated by students from various universities, Salman said that he was delighted to win the 1st position in his first experience participating in a microblog competition. He explained that initially, he was interested in participating in a poster competition but later decided to participate in a microblog competition instead.

Through this achievement, the final semester student hoped that it could encourage him to participate in other similar competitions. He also hoped that the Muslim community could learn from Islamic glory in the Abbasiyah Caliphate era with its advanced science. Humas UNS

UNS — Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held another Expert Lecture on Advancing Civilization by means of Multilingualism and Multiculturalism through a hybrid media on Monday (13/12/2021).

Discussing the theme of Multilingualism and Multiculturalism, FIB UNS Expert Lecture invited two international speakers, Prof. Frank Dhont from the National Cheng Kung University and Prof. Wayan Arka from the Australian Nasional University. The theme attracted participants’ interest, with around 90 people attending the online and offline Expert Lecture this year. They are faculty members and students from undergraduate to the doctoral degree.

The lecture was opened with an appreciation from the Dean of FIB UNS, Prof. Warto, M.Hum. As reported by fib.uns.ac.id, Prof. Warto stated that the invited speakers could share extensive experience on multilingualism and multiculturalism.

“FIB as the center for humanities study center should maintain diversity as a tool for gathering beauty and advance the civilization. Because a strong civilization consists of tolerant diversity that united to develop the nation,” Prof. Warto stated.

The discussion on multilingualism was shared in detail by Prof. Wayan Arka. According to him, language consists of two elements, social and cultural elements. The dimensions are highly complex and create leveling perspective.

Supporting the discussion from Prof. Wayan Arka on multilingualism, Prof. Frank Dhont explained material on multiculturalism. He stated that multiculturalism is a challenge that, when studied further, could result in strong civilization.

“Respect differences (culture) is an application of mental development of a society,” Prof. Frank Dhont concluded. Humas UNS

UNS — Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) Program promoted by the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology – Nadiem Makarim, requires university students to have an opportunity to learn outside the campus. This program encourages the Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta to collaborate with several parties, including Solo International Performing of Art (SIPA).

SIPA is an international event held annually. Through this event, students could get involved to be a facilitator that trains their communication skills and build networking with international partners. This opportunity was observed by the Dean of FIB UNS, Prof. Dr. Warto, M.Hum, who considers students’ involvement in SIPA will equip them in working in the future. Therefore, FIB UNS received the visit from SIPA Director, Dra. R.Ay. Irawati Kusumorasri, M.Sn.

The visit also serves as a signing ceremony for Collaboration Agreement (PKS) on Internship Practice, Curriculum Development and Preparation of Semester Learning Plan (RPS), and teaching. As reported by fib.uns.ac.id, Prof. Warto welcomed the visit from Dra. R.Ay. Irawati, who is also an alumnus of English Language and Literature Program FIB UNS, in Ruang Sidang 1 Building III FIB UNS on Friday (12/11/2021).

“Welcome back Mbak Ira. We are proud of the visit. We also hope that through this collaboration, our students could learn from SIPA how to manage the event as a student’s internship program,” Prof. Warto stated in his remark.

A similar notion was shared by Dra. R.Ay. Irawati. For her, the collaboration between FIB UNS and SIPA is her gratitude for her almamater.

“I felt honored to have an opportunity to build a partnership with FIB UNS. Thank you for giving (me) a way to share experiences and knowledge on how to hold or manage an event,” she stated.

After the signing ceremony, Prof. Warto asked Dra. R.Ay. Irawati to share her experience in initiating SIPA. Dra. R.Ay. Irawati shared that SIPA was born due to her interest in culture, which encourages her to hold an event that entertains and educates people on inter-nations Performing Art. This experience was shared through Alumni General Lecture on ‘Finding Opportunity for Career Development in Welcoming the Future’. Humas UNS

UNS — The Big Stage of Oase Theater from Arabic Language and Literature Program Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta will be held offline on Wednesday (24/11/2021) at 19.00 Jakarta Time in Teater Arena Taman Budaya Jawa Tengah (TBJT). The performance will apply Covid-19 health protocol and limit the number of viewers by 1/3 of the total capacity of the Teater Arena.

The Big Stage of Oase Theater is the first performance in the Arabic language in Solo that performs Middle East literary works. This performance is held annually, with the last performance in 2020 being held online because of the Covid-19 pandemic with the title Majnun Laila. This year, the theater performs a different theme on ‘HWJN, Kala Lengkara Dihempas Ego dan Cinta’ (when the impossible struck with ego and love), a horror romance story. Noval, HWJN assistant director, stated that this drama tells the meeting and first introduction between human and jinn.

“The jinn named Hawjan lives in an old house. One day, there was a human family who lived in the house. Shortly, Hawjan’s mother does not like a human, but Hawjan likes one of the house residents, Sawsan,” Noval explained.

Almost similar to the OUIJA film from Stiles White and Mike Flanagan, Hawjan and Sawsan, who live in two different worlds, communicate and interact using the Ouija board. Sawsan needs to arrange the letters on the board to communicate with Hawjan, making them closer and interested in one another. To uns.ac.id team, Noval stated that the HWJN story was inspired from Saudi Arabia literature from Ibraheem Abbas with the same title. His team added ‘Kala Lengkara Dihempas Ego dan Cinta’ in their performance title.

“Lengkara is an impossibility, but on another side, the impossibility of the boundary between jinn and human to have a connection and love each other can be eliminated by the ego of the jinn because it needs to do something outside the law and love it has,” Noval explained on Tuesday (16/11/2021).

The idea to perform an Arabic novel appeared at the beginning of 2021 when the Oase Theater script team conducted research on Arabic manuscripts to be performed. The team agreed to perform the Ibraheem Abbas’ novel, although the script preparation process was unique and took a long time. Noval explained that the script preparation started in early 2021 by the team who translated the novel into the Indonesian language. “From the Indonesian, we prepared the drama script, and then the script was translated back to Arabic,” Noval explained.

After completing the script preparation, Noval and the team opened the registration and casting process to find appropriate casts. The team worked hard in two months to train, usually four times a week around Building 1 FIB UNS from afternoon to evening. In several opportunities, the team also train the Agro Budaya UNS. Despite the current pandemic, Noval admitted that his team did not find significant challenges during the rehearsal, but they paid attention to each cast’s health and provided a permit to the cast to take a break when they are not fit.

Getting near to the scheduled performance, Noval stated that viewers’ enthusiasm was really high that their pre-sale tickets were all sold. However, Noval and Oase Theater ensure that there are on-site tickets that could be purchased on the performance night.

“Although the performance is in Arabic, through the acts and feelings delivered by the actors, inshallah, viewers could understand. HWJN is interesting because it shared the story between jinn and humans that is rarely raised (in literature works). The performance also has moral messages that could be learned, such as not all what we want will be achieved,” Noval concluded. Humas UNS

This webinar was attended by approximately 100 participants through the Zoom Clouds Meeting platform.

Two speakers were invited in this webinar to discuss the theme of ‘the Role of Youth Generation Through Local Wisdom-Based Strategy and Innovation in Welcoming the 5.0 Society Era.’ They are Hankenina Deafinola (Language Ambassador for DIY 2021) and Afrizal Mufti (Language Ambassadors for Central Java 2019).

In the first session, Hankenina Deafinola delivered material about the challenges and life skills needed in the 5.0 era. “In the 5.0 era, there are several jobs that will increase and decrease. Career on data analytics, big data specialists, information security analysts, digital marketing and strategy specialists, internet of things specialists, fintech engineers, database engineers, and network professionals, will continue to grow,” she explained.

Meanwhile, several fields that will keep decreasing, such as data entry clerks, accounting, bookkeeping and payroll clerks, administrative and executive secretaries, accountants and auditors, general and operation managers, business services and administration managers, human resources specialists, client information and customer service workers, assembly and factory workers, bank tellers and related clerks.

“Furthermore, the skills that must be mastered include creativity, initiative, problem-solving ability, learning spirit, intelligence, critical thinking, innovation, and leadership spirit. Additionally, the ability to design and IT proficiency are also substantial,” she added.

Meanwhile, the second speaker, Afrizal Mufti, delivered material on local wisdom.

“Substantially, local wisdom is the values that prevail in the society. Values that are believed to be true and become guidelines in the community’s daily behavior. Local wisdom is a spiritual asset or life policy that teaches people how to behave,” explained the Central Java Language Ambassador.

Youth can take a role in maintaining the local wisdom by applying cultural experience and cultural knowledge. “Culture experience is cultural preservation that is carried out by going directly into a cultural experience. Meanwhile, culture knowledge is the effort in preserving culture by creating a center for cultural information that can be implemented in many forms,” concluded Afrizal. Humas UNS

UNS — Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta in collaboration with CV. Bina Cipta Abadi held training for fire-fighting and the simulation for the use of Light Fire Extinguisher (APAR). The training was held for the academic staff and was held in the FIB UNS yard on Friday (8/10/2021).

As reported in the fib.uns.ac.id website, the training was held because of the awareness that disaster, especially fire, could occur wherever and whenever. Therefore, FIB UNS felt the need for mitigation training to reduce disaster risks. The Administrative Coordinator of FIB UNS, Arif Farida Tri Rejeki, S.Pd., M.Si., also stated that this training is a preventive measure for her unit. “Nobody wants a disaster, in this case, fire, in their workplace. As we know that fire could occur wherever and whenever especially in the office environment with various electronic tools that have a high risk of short circuits and trigger fire. Therefore, on this occasion, let us learn and practice how to handle fire and to operate fire extinguishers together,” Arif Farida stated.

Guntur Wisnu Sembodo as a trainer from CV. Bina Cipta Abadi shared the method to handle fire, from extinguishing the fire to dealing with uncontrolled fire. Firstly, Guntur shared the basic materials on fire. According to his explanation, a fire disaster is a condition when the fire is uncontrollable. To the FIB Academic Staff, Guntur reminded to call the fire force when the fire is hard to extinguish and out of reach. However, when a fire is under reach and controllable, he shared tips to extinguish the fire.

“We could handle minor fire using the available tools around us, for example, wet gunny sack, wet towels, or wet clothes, once it is bigger, (we) could use a fire extinguisher,” he explained.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://uns.ac.id/en/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/CV.-Bina-Cipta-Abadi-FIB-UNS-Fire-Fighting-Training-1.jpeg" alt="With CV.
Guntur also showed how to operate the fire extinguisher to the participants through shortened formula: CARA, remove the safety pin (cabut pin), point the hose to fire source (arahkan selang lurus menuju sumber api), squeeze to operate the tool (remas katub untuk menyemprotkan busa APAR), and point hose to the fire (arahkan selang fokus pada kobaran api).

The training participants also take turns to practice the method shared by the instructor, including handling gas leakage, extinguishing the fire using a wet gunny sack, and using a fire extinguisher. Participants were enthusiastic in training. Humas UNS
