UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) students brought other proud achievements for the university through four Mechanical Engineering Students Faculty of Engineering (FT) UNS. The Team won 2nd place winner and Best Presentation award in the 10th National Competition for Machine Design (LNTRBM 2021).

LNTRBM is an industrial tool design and innovation competition that aims to improve university students’ ability in innovating and their awareness of the nation’s independence through technology innovation. The Team has four members: Mohammad Inggi Hilmawan, Adriansyah Bagus Aryanto, Muhammad Imaduddin Hanif, and Andhika Bagus P.V.P won their achievements after fiercely competing with the other 24 teams from national universities. Due to the tight competition with many famous universities in Indonesia, Inggi, a team member, stated that they had hesitation in hoping for the best results.

“But when (we) saw the announcement, we were delighted and surprised because our Team won two categories. All feelings of tiredness seem to be paid off immediately,” Inggi said.

The competition held by Indonesia Mechanical Engineering Cooperation Institute (BKSTM) started with participating Team sending their technical proposal for their design explaining the details on their tool that meet the competition theme “Mechanic Educational Game Tool”. UNS Team proposal was selected among the Best 15 and was required to prepare a presentation video as a selection for the semifinal round. The Team was also required to participate in the question-and-answer session with the committee through an online meeting platform. The whole selection process took three months to complete before the Team could reap the results of their hard works.

The preparation stages included tool designing, tool production, and proposal review. The Team also revised their proposal and prepared a presentation video asked by the committee, followed by a question-and-answer simulation. Inggi stated that the team members obtained valuable lessons from the competition, including being confident and giving their best.

“Our team was pessimistic when observing competitors from better universities, but with confidence and high fighting spirit, Alhamdulillah, our team brought home awards and proud name for UNS,” Inggi stated. Humas UNS

UNS — Faculty Member of the Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta and researcher in the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) UNS, Ubaidillah S.T., M. Sc, Ph. D., and his team created Helmet Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) based on the Internet of Things (IoT) for Covid-19 patients. The innovation of CPAP Helmet based on IoT could manage the oxygen levels at the CPAP helmet interface and oxygen saturation integrated with IoT.

Between the monitoring and evaluation held by LPPM UNS on Thursday (21/10/2021), Ubaidillah stated that the high Covid-19 infection level in Indonesia caused chaos because many patients were experiencing difficulty breathing and struggling to find breathing apparatus. This condition inspired Ubaidillah and his team to create a non-invasive breathing apparatus. “We also see an opportunity because of the minimum use of non-invasive breathing apparatus in the form of CPAP helmet, while CPAP helmet has been found to significantly reduce virus aerosolization, which is beneficial in reducing the transmission of Covid-19,” Ubaidillah explained.

With assistance from Rizqi Husain Alfathan, Bioma Cakrawala, Muhammad Dzaky Musyaffa, Rani Dwilarasati, and Azzahra Fadhlila Aulia Nisa, Ubaidillah added an oxygen sensor and oxygen saturation sensor (SpO2) on CPAP helmet. The helmet was designed with IoT technology which enables people to receive direct measuring results through a smartphone. The helmet is reusable after replacing the oxygen cylinder and neck adhesive. Ubaidillah and the team hoped that this tool could help healthcare workers and healthcare providers in handling Covid – 19 pandemic.

3D Design and Innovation

the CPAP helmet has several 3D design excellence that facilitates the assembly and dismantling process with materials that are compatible with the patient’s body, reusable after sterilization process of the components, and replacing the oxygen tank and neck adhesive. The IoT component in the helmet aims to monitor oxygen level and saturation. “The Prototype CPAP Helmet is equipped with electronic components including Envitec OOM202 oxygen sensor, max30102 oximeter sensor, Bluetooth HC-05 module, and Arduino mega pro-2560 integrated with the IoT system,” Ubaidillah added.

The oxygen sensor was installed to measure the oxygen level inside the helmet, while the oximeter sensor measured patients’ oxygen saturation when they scanned their fingers on the infra-red sensor. The measurement results will be read by Arduino and sent to the smartphone using the Bluetooth HC-05 module, and the user could monitor the results on their phone in realtime. This innovative application can be used by everybody. Humas UNS

UNS — The Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta is ready to open international class. This announcement was delivered by the Dean of FT UNS, Dr. Techn. Ir. Sholihin As’ad in the forum group discussion (FGD) on the initiation of international class opening on Thursday (15/10/2021). Dr. Techn. Ir. Sholihin As’ad also mentioned that currently, FT UNS is preparing the facilities and curriculum needed for the international class. Two programs in the FT UNS are planned as the pilot project for the international class.

FT invited several speakers in the FGD to share experiences in opening international programs. The invited speakers are Dr. Helen Julian from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB); Harijanto Setiawan, Ph.D., from Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta (UAJY); Bhimo R. Samudro, Ph.D., the Head of Undergraduate Program in Development Economic UNS, and Director of Partnership, Development, and Internationalization UNS, Irwan Trinugroho, Ph.D.

“The pioneers are two programs, Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering. We hope later, we can add all programs in FT to open international classes. Hopefully in the 5-6 years in the future,” Dr. Techn. Ir. Sholihin stated.

Dr. Techn. Ir. Sholihin also mentioned that there are two main reasons to open the international class. First, FT UNS is striving to achieve UNS, faculty, and program vision and missions, to be an international level educational institution based on the national cultural values. He added that it would not be an easy journey, but he will make all necessary efforts to open an international class as soon as possible.

“Secondly, we saw community development that grows to be open and globalized. There is high mobility between the community and the university. Opening the program is expected to provide appropriate room to maintain this mobility. Atma Jaya has opened for 22 years, ITB, Undip, ITS even UMS have opened international classes. These are examples for us to move forward,” Dr. Techn. Ir. Sholihin As’ad added.

He also stated that there are at least 600-700 people living in Asia alone, which is a great potential in terms of mobility and graduates’ output. He mentioned that Indonesia has more than one million engineering students but only a few international students. Therefore, he wanted that UNS take place in the market even though it would take time to develop with due process. He also hoped that each program in FT has at least 7-10 international collaborations in the next five years to support program, faculty, and university internationalization efforts.

Through this FGD, Dr. Techn. Ir. Sholihin hoped to obtain experiences from the speakers in opening international classes. Of seven programs offered in FT UNS, two are internationally accredited as the key in opening international classes. Humas UNS
