UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta students answered community challenges for an agent of change from the young generation. Abyan Ajrurrafi Syauqi from Communication Science Program 2017, Aberrant Pratama Yoga Nur Permana from International Relations Program 2017, Ilman Abdurahman from Communication Science Program 2019, and Tieko Januar Cahyadi from International Relations Program 2017 won several international competitions through their Masjiduna and Acacia application.

To the uns.ac.id team, Abyan explained that the Masjiduna application was designed to accommodate the needs of the Muslim community abroad and in the country by promoting the two ways approach between mosque and the community. The community is expected to be facilitated in accessing the information, knowledge, and essential functions of a mosque holistically from the social, economy, and education. The application allows people to find mosques in their environment and to find the nearest mosque during their travel.

“While Masjiduna for Marbot allows mosque managers (marbot) to access various features in managing mosque and conducting progressive activities in maximizing the services from the mosque for its congregations,” Abyan stated.

He added that Masjiduna is also designed to assist the Muslim community in developing a more productive, knowledgeable, and help each other through the available features. At the macro level, Masjiduna also facilitates the formation of the halal industry in Indonesia and globally through mosque digitalization in supporting Muslim progressiveness through coordination and better interaction. With synergy between the App for Marbot and App for Jamaah, the creators hoped for a positive impact from the process to a better direction for the Muslim community and its positive impact on the heterogeneous environment.

Acacia is a system designed and developed as a waste management system at the community level that meets the sustainable socio-economic and environmental principles. This app functioned as a system that aims to reduce the number of unprocessed wastes in Indonesia, especially household wastes, through the reuse, reduce, recycle mechanism. Abyan explained that their system is different from other similar systems because it promotes social aspects besides the environmental aspects. Through Acacia, the team pursues the creation of a new trend in managing household wastes through ‘turning wastes into goodness’ that allow people to manage their wastes while donating the results of wastes management.

Abyan also shared that he and his team are interested in application development because they are aware of the offered opportunity that could create goodness for society through technology. During their development progress, the team also conducted a feasibility test by participating in an international conference because they hoped for international-level impact. The competition also serves as a bridge for the team in evaluating and completing their development process in achieving maximum results.

“Alhamdulillah, we received several awards from some competition. Masjiduna received Gold Medal International Avicenna Youth Science Fair (IAYSF) 2021 in Iran last October and Silver Medal International Invention and Innovation Competition (I3C) 2021 in Malaysia last November. While for Acacia, we received the Bronze Medal World International Competition and Exhibition (WICE) 2021 in Malaysia last September and the Bronze Medal International Science and Invention Fair (ISIF) 2021 last October,” Abyan explained.

In developing both applications, Abyan and friends experienced challenges that were demanded to find a solution for the issues and translate it into application features. The hardest was when they needed to perfect the concept to be implemented in their application. Therefore, during the development process, they focused on the impact, problem-solving, validity, and relevance of the ideas. “Whether it is really relevant in the community and whether it creates full benefits or only little benefits,” he added.

Their app development has prepared for the future prospects, future income and is looking for investors. The team also continuously develops and perfects their initial concept through research on users’ needs. Abyan stated that they plan to launch their concept as a startup in the near future.

“Insyaallah, in the near future, we will realize the concept into a new startup that aims to bring a great impact for the users, and we want to invite our stakeholders to participate in realizing this project,” Abyan explained.

Abyan concluded the interview with his inspiration ‘Do not let our youth pass without impressive works.’ “Don’t try to impress people but try to impact, because the impression will be lost and impact will survive.” Humas UNS

UNS — The Constitutional Court (MK) of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) held a general lecture for Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta students on Friday (3/12/2021). The lecture was held hybrid from Ruang Sidang FISIP UNS and through Zoom Cloud Meeting.

Discussing the topic of “MK’s Role and Challenges in Achieving Democratic Political and Legal System,” the Vice-Chairman of MK, Prof. Aswanto, and MK Judge, Prof. Sardi Isra, who attended the lecture as speakers, encouraged FISIP UNS students to understand the design of Indonesian constitution. Although constitutional law falls under a common discussion topic for the Faculty of Law (FH), it is also essential for students in FISIP and other faculties to master the basic knowledge because the judicial process in MK often involves multidisciplinary consideration. The comprehension regarding the topic for FISIP students is also encouraged so that students understand the separation of power, function, and duty of each state institution as regulated in the 1945 Constitution (UUD 1945)

“Students in each program need to fully understand how the constitution works in a country. Constitutions provide a minimalistic exhibit of a country. Read the constitution, what is the form of the state, the form of the government, the relationship between state institutions, and the relationship between the state and its citizens,” Prof. Sardi Isra stated.

Prof. Sardi Isra also stated that constitutional discussion is not limited to the legal system but also the political system. He explained that the state constitution would directly cause friction with the political interest requiring the check and balance principle in balancing the law and power.

“Therefore, it needs to be anticipated by designing different institutions that could prevent certain institutions from taking actions against the constitution,” he added.

Considering this urgency, MK is included as a new state institution two years after the reformation through UUD 1945 amendment performed by MPR. This establishment is the adoption of the Constitutional Court concept that put MK as one of judiciary power in 2001. The inclusion of MK into the Indonesian state structure is regulated in Article 24 paragraph (2), paragraph 24C, and paragraph 7B of UUD 1945 after the third amendment stipulated on 9 November 2001.

“One of the considerations to establish Constitutional Court is frequent development or developed laws are substantially not in line with the norms or content of UUD,” Prof. Aswanto stated.

To the FISIP UNS students attending the general lecture, Prof. Aswanto stated that MK role in the reformation era is increasingly important to balance the executive and legislative powers. In his opinion, these two powers should not dominate to attack one another because it will affect the political condition negatively. For example, the President and vice president’s impeachment before the reformation is regulated in the UUD 1945. However, he thinks that impeachment should be based on constitutional law instead of a purely political agenda.

“If there is a disagreement between the DPR and the President, many presidents could be impeached in the mid of their office. That’s why we need an institution that could assess if what is decided by DPR, is the President really commit a violation,” he added.

MK is also vital to ensure that there are no laws (UU) developed with content that contradict UUD 1945. Recently, MK ruled that UU Number 11 of 2020 regarding Cipta Kerja as conditionally unconstitutional. In their ruling, MK mentioned UU Cipta Kerja’s development process did not follow the definite and standard method and means and did not follow the systematic formation process for a law. There were also corrections of writing on the content of the law after the agreed meeting between DPR and the President.

“If the solution is handed to the creator of the UU, usually they will keep it although there are mistakes. That’s why we need an institution that could assess if the prepared UU is in line with the UUD 20145,” Prof. Aswanto concluded. Humas UNS

UNS — Writing skills followed by design skills are two useful skills in the digital era that ease the information searching process for almost everyone. This is no exception for someone’s personal branding. Social media has grown and captured the interest of many, as well as being one of the channels to build personal branding. However, the use of this channel demands its users to improve their skills beyond writing skills, namely through design skills.

In collaborating with Sociology Program Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Student Association in Sociology (Himasos) FISIP UNS held Webinar National on Design and Writing ‘Build the Personal Branding in the Digital Era.’ The webinar was held online through the Zoom Cloud Meeting application on Saturday (4/12/2021) with two speakers: Content Creator Muh. Azhar Suadi and Daya Dimensi Assessor Armando Radityawan.

The speakers were invited to share their knowledge and experiences in design and writing and its importance in building personal branding in the digital era, in line with the objective of this webinar to improve participants’ knowledge in graphic design as an instrument to build persona branding amid the digital era.

“Building personal branding is highly recommended in the social media because it becomes portfolio and value for ourselves,” Muh. Azhar Suadi stated.

Muh. Azhar Suadi added that building personal branding through social media could start from creating interesting content, such as tips creating a design in a short video in line with the increasing attention provided to the short video sharing platform, such Tik Tok, reels, and YouTube Shorts.

Although the design is crucial in building personal branding in social media, Muh. Azhar Suadi reminded participants to be aware and not get stuck on ‘interesting content’ because graphic design is different from a content creator who has the duty to prepare a concept for their content. He also emphasized that participants do not need to create ‘wow’ content but rather focus on the content of their work. However, creating interesting and exciting headlines is also vital in capturing people’s attention.

“The first three seconds are crucial because it decides people interest to stop scrolling. It is a loss if we make a ‘wow’ content, but it isn’t interesting,” Muh. Azhar Suadi explained.

The webinar also equips its participant with tips for building personal branding through Curriculum Vitae (CV) shared by the second speaker, Armando Radityawan.

The National Webinar that started at 09.00 am local time received positive responses from participants. The enthusiasm increased when the moderator, Vina Damayanti, led the questions-and-answers session. Participants sent their questions in turns and created interesting discussions between the participants and speakers. Humas UNS

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta hosts the Public Assessment for Information Disclosure Central Java Province 2021 on 23-24 November 2021. This assessment evaluates the management of information disclosure from each district/municipality, institution, and public agency in Central Java Province. The first day of assessment was attended by the Mayor of Surakarta, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Karanganyar District Regent Juliyatmono, Kudus District Regent H. M Hartopo, and Batang District Regent Wihaji.

The visit from local governments in Central Java Province was welcomed by the Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs UNS Prof. Sajidan, Dean of FISIP UNS Prof. Ismi Dwi Astuti Nurhaeni, and the Head of Master Program in Communication Science Postgraduate School UNS Dr. Andre N. Rahmanto.

In his opening remark before opening the assessment, Prof. Sajidan stated that information disclosure in the reformation era is a need and responsibility for state administrators because people want to be involved in every policy-making process and demand accountable and transparent government according to the good governance principles.

“Moreover, the modernization of Information Technology and communication that provides freedom for people to get any information they want easily and rapidly,” he stated.

Therefore, Prof. Sajidan considers that government, institutes, and public agencies need to open themselves to the community and provide information surrounding their policies openly and accessible for people. Although, on the one hand, information openness is often abused for certain interests, Prof. Sajidan stated that technology modernization should be used as a momentum for the government to take strategic policies.

“This mandate encourages all public agencies in Indonesia, including public universities, to apply public information disclosure. This is an implementation of Law No. 14/ 2008 on Public Information Disclosure,” Prof. Sajidan explained.

The Commissioner of Provincial Information Commission (KIP) of Central Java Province, Ermy Sri Ardhyanti, explained in her speech that the assessment was held to provide a transparent perspective on public information for the community. In the two-days assessment, 15 districts/municipalities, 14 public hospitals at district/municipality and province/central region, and 29 provincial units at Central Java Province will be examined. KIP of Central Java will assess and classify the local government or public agencies into informative, moving to informative, quite informative, lack of informativeness, and not informative. Ermy Sri Ardhyanti mentioned that this public assessment had been held since 2014, and she hoped that this assessment could improve information transparency management by all local governments and public agencies in Central Java Province.

“Fifty-eight public agencies have passed the selection process wince May 2021. Including website check and social media managed (by the agencies). This public assessment is the fourth stage, and those who participate in this assessment are public agencies with a score higher than 80,” Ermy explained. Humas UNS

UNS — The Doctoral Program in Communication Science Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta succeded in graduating the first doctor, Emi Widiyanti. Emi, the Faculty Member of Agricultural Extension & Communication Program Faculty of Agriculture (FP) UNS was succeeded in defending her dissertation on ‘Negotiating the Communication Identity of Millennial Farmers and Progressive Farmers in the Era of Agriculture 4.0.’

The defense was held on Monday (22/11/2021), with Prof. Ravik Karsidi as promotor, Prof. Mahendra Wijaya as Co Promotor 1, and Prahastiwi Utari, Ph.D. as Co Promotor 2. The board of examiners was led by Prof. Ahmad Yunus, Prof. Ismi Dwi Astuti Nurhaeni as secretary, and Prof. Suwarto, Prof. Pawito, Dr. Andre Rahmanto, as members.

In her dissertation, Emi suggested to the agricultural extension officers to provide communication technology literacy to ensure that farmers have the millennials’ and progressive farmers’ communication identity. Communication technology literacy has an impact on the social changes recorded in human history.

“Social structure becomes a process that shapes stereotypes negotiated in determining competences through the competence formation,” Emi explained.

As reported in https://s3ilkom.fisip.uns.ac.id, Emi stated that negotiation of millennials and progressive farmers identity contains a perspective on technology, social, cultural, and environmental transfer. Emi also found that competence, courage to motivate other farmers, culture, and environmental supports in millennial farmers make them good agricultural extension officers for other farmers. The existing identity negotiation and communication caused by the current condition faced by farmers, in which their profession was threatened by newly developed professions in the urban regions.

Emi added that farmers need competence improvement in communication skills to explain that their profession is a professional occupation in the community structure. To support the communication skills of farmers, the role of agricultural extension officers is needed to deliver materials on communication and agricultural management. At the end of her defense, Emi added that mother and wife are the main driving force for millennials and progressive farmers in their negotiation of communication identity. Humas UNS
