UNS — The threat of the third wave of Covid-19 is increasingly visible and is worsened with the new Omicron variant that has spread to several countries. In preventing the third wave of Covid-19 in Indonesia, the students of the Geography Education Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta took the initiative to establish Covid-19 Disaster Resistant Village.

The students in Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) Grant of Geography Education team made Simo Village, Simo Subdistrict, Boyolali District as a Disaster Reliant Village. In the program held in three months from September to November 2021, the team helped in mapping the spread of Covid-19 in the village. Simo village was selected because it was the first village affected by the second wave of Covid-19 in the Boyolali District between July and August 2021. Since then, the local government has made numerous efforts, including vaccination in collaboration with TNI/Polri, to return their region into the green zone and control the Covid-19 infection level.

Determined not to let the same thing reoccur in the village, Simo Village continuously improving its system with the help from MBKM Grant Team UNS. Various activities were programmed by the 10-members team, including mapping of Covid-19 spread in the previous wave. The mapping includes location plotting with borders of hamlets, public facilities, and demographic data. The team created an administrative map for Simo Village, population density map, Covid-19 spread map, Covid-19 risk map, Covid-19 threat map, Covid-19 capacity map, and Covid-19 vulnerability map, as references for the village government in preventing and handling the current pandemic.

Aida Nur Azqiya, the team coordinator, thanked Simo Village for the collaboration and hoped that the program could continue in the future. The team supervised by Dr. Rita Noviani, S.Si., M.Sc., and Dr. Pipit Wijayanti, S.Si., M.Sc., also established Covid-19 volunteer group with Karang Taruna Desa Simo members through socialization on the mitigation of Covid-19 and counseling on Covid-19 Disaster Resistant Village by inviting the Regional Disaster Mitigation Board of Boyolali District.

The team also conducts training Serambi Tani for the local people to improve people’s economic resilience in facing natural and non-natural disasters. The program that is aimed at housewives and members of Simo Village PKK provides training for polybag planting methods for various plants such as eggplant, chili, and tomato that match Simo Village topography. The participants also learned to make liquid organic fertilizers (POC) from household wastes such as vegetables and fruits wastes, rice water, and microbial liquid. These materials were fermented to produce POC.

Simo Village Chief, Mujiono, S.Sos., shared his delight in the program and hoped that the program could run smoothly till the end. “As Simo Village Chief, I thanked all students for dedicating (your program) to our village. Hopefully, this program could benefit us,” Mujiono stated. Humas UNS

UNS — Student Association of Chemistry Education Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a national webinar. The online event was attended by around 150 participants from various universities and served as the closing ceremony of Kovalen Edu Fair XI 2021.

Three speakers were invited to the webinar: Prof. Richardus Eko Indrajit, Rector of Universitas Pradita, Dr. Paed. Nurma Yunita Indriyanti, the Head of Natural Science Program UNS, and dr. Dian Nugroho, faculty member of Medicine Education Program UNS. Anita Sukarini, S.Pd., as the Vice-School Headmaster for Curriculum SMA Bina Widya Solo, acted as the moderator in the webinar.

Prof. Richardus delivered the first material on the golden generation of 2045. He argued that golden Indonesia is an independent and sovereign country that could fulfill its clothing, food, and shelter needs without help from other countries. According to him, the pandemic is an opportunity to learn and be independent.

“We need to take the ball to learn that we should become an independent learner, without commanded, (we) need to improve our self-quality to get the benefits from the demography bonus,” he stated.

dr. Dian Nugroho argued that people in their productive age need to be diligent in learning to ensure that they would reap something in the future.

“Learn today for the future, not to act for today. Before the pandemic, we experienced the time of technology destruction with a lack of technological development, while the pandemic destruction period, (we) faces double destruction that requires us to do something outside the norms, (because) when it is done following the norms, there are no added values. Move away from the comfort zone,” he stated in the webinar on Saturday (31/10/2021).

He also added that in welcoming golden Indonesia, there are three keys in the education sector: students, teachers, and the learning process. He added that to welcome the change, people need to prepare a strategy or literacy on communication and technology. This includes improving the efficiency of resources.

The last speaker, Dr. paed Nurma Yunita Indriyanti, argued that Golden Indonesia 2045 is a bright, strong, and independent country. In the education sector, university students will be free to learn wherever. “Currently, the education also builds a meta knowledge, not only knowledge. Knowledge could be gained from wherever, meta knowledge, problem-solving, and humanitarian,” Dr. Nurma explained. Humas UNS

UNS — Science for Early Childhood Team Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a community service program in the form of a Webinar on Science Education for Early Childhood on Monday (22/11/2021). The community service team consisted of Kistantia Elok Mumpuni, S.Pd., M.Pd., Vera Sholeha, S.Pd., M.Pd., and Endri Sintiana Murni, S.Pd., M.Pd.

The team members consisted of faculty members and students of the Biology Education Program, Early Childhood Education Program (PG PAUD), and Fine Art Education Program. The involvement of diverse education backgrounds aims to provide an appropriate education for parents in teaching science to their children.

The webinar was implemented in four series; science education for early childhood, skills in science process and preparing simple science activities at home, arts and science, and sharing of science activities at-home experiences. This program was initiated due to the inappropriate perception of science for early childhood and aims to educate parents on how to deliver the concept of science and assist children in studying at home.

“Because the perception of science is a complicated knowledge and is not appropriate for early childhood,” Vera Sholeha, the first speaker in the webinar, explained the misperception of science for early childhood.

To counter the misperception, she provided examples of science that are close to children’s daily life, such as children playing with sands and filtering the grains of sand as an application of physics, seeing a rainbow, the sound of frog, making tea, and ball pitching play. “The concept of science could be understood by children when explained using simple language,” she added.

Kristiana Elok Mumpuni, S.Pd., M.Pd., shared material on preparing simple science activities at home. She stated that science comprehension could be achieved through observation and practice on science. Parents need to consider their children’s age, the theme of science program, learning method, tools and equipment, and parents’ ability.

“Science does not have to be learned in the laboratory with advanced tools, but could be learned at home with surrounding tools and materials,” she added.

The third speaker, Endri Sintiana Murni, S.Pd., M.Pd., shared the relationship between arts and science and how to use arts to introduce science to children. She explained that children could express themselves freely, connecting what is in their thoughts into artworks, and even science reports can be provided in the form of artworks and examples.

“For example, the sound created from taps on glass that could form musical arrangement. This is a combination of physics and arts,” she said.

The last series was concluded with sharing of experiences on science activities at home with children. Humas UNS

UNS — Student Association of Physics Education Program Grafitasi Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a graphic design training on Sunday (28/11/2021). The event was held under the theme of “Design Your Dream, Share Your Inspiration” and invited the 1st winner of Design Challenge by Plainthing Studio, Muhammad Fathurridlo as speaker and Novita Ceicilia Ayu Laksita, Physics Education Program student, as the moderator.

The event was opened with an opening remark from the Chairman of HMP Pendidikan Fisika, Muhammad Khairul Annam Najahy, who mentioned that this event is important because the publication of the event during the pandemic requires a graphic design to attract more participants. The event was followed by a material presentation from Muhammad Fathurridlo, who shared materials on design as campaign media. Therefore, designers need to understand many types of media.

“We need to understand the types of design for campaign media or publication of an event. There are banners, posters, flyers, and others. Match the design with the need of your event,” Fathur stated.

Fathur also explained the components of campaign media, especially posters. “In general, the components of a poster are the host, name of the event, sub-theme of the event, names of speakers, place, time, platform, link, contact person, the benefits of the event, and sponsors if any,” Fathur said.

He added materials on tips in designing campaign media for publication, such as determining the grand theme, consistency, matching the target audiences, and measurable. Designers need to ensure that the contents are correct because it will affect the composition of the design. Designers also need to match their design with their audiences and the event, for example, the use of bright and colorful parts for an exciting event.

Fathur added a simulation of design making using Figma in his materials. He explained that Figma could be used for many things; it also provides teamwork use, offers diverse features, and is free to use. The event was concluded with a question-and-answer session, discussion, and group picture. Humas UNS

UNS — Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta welcomed a visit from three universities on Thursday (18/11/2021). The three universities are Universitas Mataram (Unram), Universitas Borneo Tarakan (UBT), and Universitas Negeri Malang (UM).

The welcoming ceremony was opened by Vice-Dean for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs FKIP UNS, Prof. Slamet Subiyantoro, who hoped that the program could provide a source of improvements for universities in the future. “This program is expected not only to develop partnership but also improvements for universities in the future,” Prof. Slamet stated. The ceremony was then officially opened by the Dean of FKIP UNS, Dr. Mardiyana, M.Si., who thanked the three visiting universities for coming to FKIP UNS. “It is a great pleasure for us that you could come to learn together, especially Unram and UBT that are still in one FKIP forum,” he stated.

The visit was divided into three different forums according to the topic of the visit by each visiting university. UBT discussed the implementation of Pre-school Environment (PLP), Unram discussed the collaboration in establishing Doctoral Program in Natural Science education, and UM discussed the benchmark between UNS and UM. The program was opened with sharing of FKIP UNS profile, organizational structure, the target of Key Performance Indicators (IKU) 2021-2024, faculty accreditation, programs certification plan, and FKIP contribution in the National Science Week (Pimnas) 2021 by Dr. Mardiyana. In this sharing, Dr. Mardiyana also shared his wish that all programs in FKIP UNS will have a professional assessment scheme so that all graduates will have a bachelor certificate, bachelor certificate supplement (SKPI), and professional certification.

Following the sharing from the Dean of FKIP UNS, UBT stated in the discussion forum that their visit aims to perform a comparative study in PLP implementation. The team was led by Winarno, S.Pd., M.Pd., and Ni Made Diah Padmi, S.Pd., M.Pd, and Riska Febriani, S.E., as members then participated in the Workshop in Evaluation on the Implementation of School Environment Introduction (PLP) held by UP2KT FKIP UNS in Building F FKIP UNS 3rd floor Hall that was attended by partners school headmasters.

The Head of Doctoral Program in Natural Science Education UNS, Prof. Sulistyo Saputro, M.Si, Ph.D., continued the discussion on the opening of a similar program in Unram and collaboration between Unram and FKIP UNS with Prof. Agus Ramdani from Unram. In the discussion, Prof. Sulis shared the management of his Doctoral Program starting from the profile, faculty members, alumni, development plans, research track record, and the steps to achieve its vision to be an excellent program at the international level by 2024. These steps include inviting guest lecturers, conducting an international conference, and inviting visiting professors from other countries and Indonesia.

“Alhamdulillah, working towards 2024, some programs to achieve the vision to excel at the international level have been implemented well. This is proved by applicants in the Doctoral Program in Natural Science Education from abroad. Yesterday, I was contacted by International Office that there are applicants from abroad. It is a pride that UNS internationalization could increase the interest towards our program,” Prof. Sulis stated.

Responding to the sharing from Prof. Sulis, Prof. Agus as a representative from Unram shared his progress in the development of their new Doctoral Program. Unram had conducted an assessment on 16 November and had received a permit to open the program.

“After the assessment, there is a big homework regarding the facilities and infrastructure that need to be completed in the next two weeks. Frankly, we do not know that independent study facilities are the main requirement in the opening of this new program. Because UNS had received an operational permit earlier, we visit UNS to learn about the matter,” he explained.

The program was closed with a signing of collaboration agreement between FKIP UNS and Unram and the exchange of tokens of appreciation. Humas UNS

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta student won another national competition. Fiska Amanda Mulia, History Education Program (Prodi) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UNS, won 2nd position in the Infographic Poster Competition held by Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK) on October 2021.

Fiska stated that she was just trying to participate in the competition. The last-years student prepared her poster between her supervision time for undergraduate thesis writing. The student from Gemolong stated that she did not expect to win 2nd place.

“Alhamdulillah, grateful because I am a last-year student while waiting for undergraduate thesis revision from my supervisor. I tried to participate and did not expect to win,” Fiska stated.

The poster competition she participated in was an individual competition for university students in Indonesia. At the early stage, Fiska sent her poster to the committee, which then was selected to participate in the Best 9 posters before being re-assessed and was announced as the 2nd winner.

This achievement has a special meaning for Fiska because she has won twice in two competitions held by ITK. “In 2020, I won 2nd place for business plan competition in ITK and now 2nd place poster (competition in ITK),” she said.

Since joining UNS, Fiska has won several competitions. In 2017, she won funding for her cake business, Bronislur, which has significant growth and brought Fiska as the finalist of the Indonesian Student Entrepreneurship (KMI) Award X held by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology in 2019. Fiska also won 1st place in the national MSME Competition held by Institut Pertanian Bogor in 2020. Currently, she is working on her undergraduate thesis while managing her Bronislur business. Humas UNS
