UNS—The Faculty of Information Technology and Data Science (Fatisda) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has welcomed its second professor, Prof. Dr. Wiharto, S.T., M.Kom., with a specialization in Biomedical Computation.

Prof. Wiharto was officially inaugurated by UNS Rector Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., in an Open Senate Session held on Friday (20/12/2024) at the G.P.H. Haryo Mataram Auditorium. His inaugural speech was titled “Biomedical Data Computation Based on Explainable Artificial Intelligence.”

As UNS’s 329th professor, Prof. Wiharto emphasized the critical role of biomedical data in healthcare. Such data provides in-depth insights into individual and population health, supports the development of precise treatments, and enhances disease prevention efforts. Examples include laboratory test results, medical imaging, and physiological signals. Utilizing this data enables early disease detection, leading to faster and more effective treatments.

Prof. Wiharto employs a cutting-edge field within Artificial Intelligence (AI) known as Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI). This innovation improves upon traditional Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) methods by making the decision-making process of AI models transparent. XAI techniques, such as Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) and Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (grad-CAM), are pivotal. SHAP explains the contribution of each input feature to the model’s predictions, while grad-CAM highlights areas within images that significantly influence the model’s decisions.

“One example of an XAI-based model I’ve developed is an intelligent system for predicting coronary heart disease (CHD) based on various clinical and physiological assessments. This model helps perform feature selection, identifying key factors for CHD prediction,” Prof. Wiharto explained.

By utilizing minimal feature selection, the model achieves effective CHD detection. Additionally, SHAP ensures that the system provides interpretable explanations for its predictions, demonstrating the robustness and reliability of these innovations.

XAI techniques also extend to detecting pneumonia and COVID-19. These detections utilize Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) applied to biomedical X-ray and chest MRI data. Using grad-CAM, specific areas of X-ray and MRI images are identified as critical indicators of pneumonia or COVID-19.

Furthermore, Prof. Wiharto has integrated grad-CAM into image segmentation models for applications such as skin lesions and polyp imaging. A notable innovation is the development of the Efficient Comprehensive Attention Network (ECA-Net) for skin lesion segmentation. For polyp segmentation, a double U-Net model using Depthwise Separable Convolution (DSC) and Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) has been introduced.

“The integration of XAI into classification and segmentation models, both for image and non-image data, allows each stage of the model’s process to be explainable. This transparency enhances user trust in the system,” he stated.

Prof. Wiharto’s contributions hold significant promise for advancing scientific knowledge. UNS Rector Prof. Hartono, in his remarks, reaffirmed UNS’s commitment to excellence in education, research, and community service. “With achievements like these, we are optimistic about UNS’s future, both nationally and globally. We aspire for UNS to make even greater contributions in addressing societal, national, and international challenges,” Prof. Hartono concluded.

“Through KKN, students are not only expected to apply the knowledge they have gained in class but also to learn from the social and cultural dynamics of the communities they serve,” Prof. Hartono said.

He emphasized the importance of carrying out responsibilities with creativity, innovation, and a sense of accountability. Students were encouraged to build good relationships with local communities, respect their traditions and cultures, and become agents of positive change in their respective areas.

UNS — The Rector of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr. M.Si., expressed confidence that UNS’s achievements will continue to grow with the addition of new professors. He conveyed this optimism during his remarks at the inauguration of five new UNS professors at the G.P.H. Haryo Mataram Auditorium on Friday (20/12/2024).

These five professors, representing various fields of expertise, are part of the 29 professors inaugurated during the professorial inauguration week, which took place from Monday (16/12/2024) to Friday (20/12/2024).

“Alhamdulillah, in addition to the 29 professors inaugurated this week, there are 29 more UNS professor candidates awaiting their inauguration schedule. We plan to hold the second professorial inauguration week at the end of January or early February 2025,” Prof. Hartono announced.

He emphasized UNS’s commitment to excellence in education, research, and community service. “We are increasingly optimistic that UNS’s achievements will continue to rise both nationally and internationally, locally and globally. We hope UNS will make greater contributions in addressing various issues facing society, the nation, and the state,” he added.

Prof. Hartono extended his highest appreciation to the newly inaugurated professors for their dedication, commitment, tireless efforts, and hard work in achieving the highest academic functional position. He reminded them that being a professor is merely a personal achievement and a responsibility to advance science, education, and national development.

“This inauguration is a source of pride for the professors, their families, and the entire UNS academic community. I encourage all members of the UNS community to use this moment as inspiration and motivation to enhance the quality of education, research, and innovation at UNS,” he urged.

“To the newly inaugurated professors, I hope this achievement marks the beginning of even greater contributions to UNS, society, the nation, and the state. May it bring blessings to all of us,” Prof. Hartono concluded.

The winning team, named Icarus Team Reborn, comprises Muhammad Anang Fathur Rohman, Hafidh Muhammad Akbar, and Andika Kavin Septiano.

Speaking to uns.ac.id on Wednesday (10/30/2024), team member Anang explained that their project, titled “Pixel Attention HalfU-Net,” focused on environmental sustainability. The aim of their research is to streamline urban planning in Indonesia using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

“For this competition, we had the freedom to use data from any source as long as it aligned with the theme of environmental sustainability and was presented in scientific paper format. Our team developed a new deep learning method called ‘Pixel Attention HalfU-Net,’ designed to automatically detect buildings using satellite imagery. We believe this AI-driven approach can make urban planning in Indonesia more effective,” Anang explained.

The team received mentorship from Heri Prasetyo, S.Kom., M.Sc.Eng., Ph.D., a lecturer in UNS’s Informatics Study Program, who guided them through the competition’s preparation stages. The team focused on developing a deep-learning model prototype for their research.

“Under the guidance of our mentor, Dr. Heri Prasetyo, we searched for datasets suitable for this research, built the deep learning model, and conducted multiple trials to optimize its accuracy and memory efficiency,” Anang said.

Anang and his team expressed pride in their achievement at Unesa, seeing it as a milestone that demonstrates UNS’s Informatics Program’s ability to compete nationally alongside top universities.

“We are thrilled and proud of this accomplishment. The competition included some of Indonesia’s most prestigious universities, so our achievement highlights the UNS Informatics Program’s competitiveness and excellence on a national scale,” Anang added. HUMAS UNS

UNS — Prof. Drs. Bambang Harjito, M.App.Sc., Ph.D., became the first professor at the Faculty of Information Technology and Data Science (FATISDA) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta. He was inaugurated at the Open Session of UNS Academic Senate, Tuesday (7/3/2023). This was a special gift considering FATISDA UNS itself is one of the faculties that just opened last year.

Prof. Bambang struggle is not fairly easy. He started proposing professors in 2019. Now, he had successfully obtained the title that is the dream of all lecturers as a form of recognition for academic achievement.

“I realized, the road was winding and it took more than 30 years to get a professorship. This was God’s way of making me learn more. Having more knowledge and experience so that in the end I can still be given the opportunity to make more contributions to my institution,” Prof. Bambang said, Monday (6/3/2023).

Prof. Bambang is the first professor at FATISDA and the 257th UNS. He was inaugurated as a Professor in the field of Cryptography and Information Security with an inauguration speech on Keamanan Informasi Menggunakan Kriptografi DNA berbasis NTRU Kriptosistem pada Cyber Space (Information Security Using NTRU Cryptosystem-based DNA Cryptography in Cyber Space).

To uns.ac.id, he had never been imagined as becoming a professor. This was also not his childhood dream. He initially wanted to become a civil servant in the field of physical defense.

“I have tried several times (to take part in the selection) to enter the field of defense after graduating from high school and graduating from bachelor’s degree. However, it’s still not fate,” Prof. Bambang said.

The UNS Professor who was born in 1962 in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, had a lot of formal education in Surakarta. In senior high school, Prof. Bambang admitted that he was not a class star. He felt that he was just an ordinary student and almost never got a significant student ranking.

His self-confidence began to emerge when he was in third grade at SMA N 4 Surakarta. At that time, Prof. Bambang met a subject that challenged him, namely mathematics. That moment became his motivation to master the subject.

Prof. Bambang continued his studies at the Mathematics Department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Yogyakarta. This choice was taken to find answers to his deep curiosity in mathematics. He also graduated in 1988.

His career at UNS began when he was accepted as a lecturer in the Mathematics Study Program (Prodi) which was then at the Faculty of Engineering (FT) in 1991. Five years later, in 1996, FMIPA UNS was established and Prof. Bambang continued his service as a lecturer there.

He had the opportunity to continue his Masters studies in 1998 at James Cook Queensland, Australia. The most influential moment for him until now occurred at that time. The supervisor retired that year and Prof. Bambang “diverted” his interest towards the field of Computer Science.
