UNS — The pandemic that runs for almost two years does not limit the creativity of the Fine Arts Program Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta students. The new students of 2021 were inspired to conduct a virtual photography exhibition “Dig More” on 27—29 November 2021 through Instagram, YouTube, and Artsteps.

Ari Kurniawan, the Chairman of the Dig More Exhibition committee, stated that the exhibition is a place to express for him and for his fellows, who expressed themselves through photography. He explained that Dig More means exploring deeper.

“This exhibition is a place to express, explore self potentials in photography, and a place to apply the course materials in Basic Photography because something that (we) studied deeper and seriously will create a greater impression. The more you dig, the more you great,” he said.

Their photography works are the form of implementation of knowledge they learned in Basic Photography class taught by Dyah Yuni K, S.Sn., M.Sn. Dyah stated that this exhibition is an output of her course and a place for students to explore their ability and potential in the photography field. She also appreciated students’ initiatives to hold Dig More Exhibition.

“This exhibition is a form of their responsibility as academic artists to the public. Hopefully, this kind of exhibition could continue, although amid the pandemic situation,” Dyah stated.

The exhibition was also appreciated by the Head of Fine Arts Program FSRD UNS, Dr. Setyo Budi, M.Sn., who stated that the theme in the exhibition was very appropriate to explore students’ awareness to continue learning and exploring for their future. Dr. Setyo also appreciated that the exhibition showed photography works that are still underestimated.

“I appreciated it because what you showed is photography. People often think that photography is a practice that needs to take a picture. But photography is learning to capture the moment, capture an impression, capture something so that it doesn’t disappear. If in semester 1 you already have the awareness to capture an aesthetic moment, it is an excellent awareness,” he said.

The virtual exhibition could be visited at @digmore Instagram account, Dig More 2021 YouTube, and Artsteps website at https://linktr.ee/DigMore2021. Humas UNS

UNS — Starting life in a new place is not an easy task. This condition is experienced by Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta’s new students who need both academic and non-academic orientation in their new journey. The longing was captured by the Student Association in Fine Arts Program (HMSM), Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD) UNS, who welcomed the new student by conducting Studio Exploration (Exodus).

The event that was held online and offline on 8-10 October 2021 aims to introduce the studio and community in FSRD UNS to the new students who will choose between painting, sculpture, ceramic art, and graphic arts. Under the theme of “Box of Pandora”, Exodus 2021 is expected to spur students’ creativity to work freely, expressively, and creatively. Besides introducing the studies in FSRD, the program also facilitates a sharing of knowledge on diverse arts activities that could be learned outside the class. Several materials were also shared, such as digital posters, performance art, and patch creating workshop.

The supervisor of HMSM UNS, Dyah Yuni Kurniawati, S.Sn. M.Sn., said that she was delighted with the HMSM initiative to hold Exodus.

“Hopefully, studio introduction and materials shared in this program could benefit the new students in participating in the learning process in Fine Arts Program UNS,” Dyah stated.

Exodus 2021 was started with sculpture studio material, followed by digital poster material. HMSM also conducted a competition to create a digital and conventional poster that was won by Ari and Vito, who won a limited edition t-shirt as a souvenir of Exodus 2021.

Ceramic and painting studios were shared on the second day, followed by a patch workshop from Dani, a 7th-semester student at Fine Arts Program UNS. The last day was for sharing stories and experiences from various classes in the Fine Arts Program UNS from 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. They shared their stories in learning at di FSRD UNS and sharing the low-cost food courts around UNS. HMSM hoped that the sharing could build a good relationship with the new students that they wouldn’t be surprised when the learning process starts to be held offline again. Humas UNS

UNS — Fine Arts Study Program, Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a discussion on Art Man Management and Millennial Generation Acceleration. This discussion was conducted in a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) setting as part of the 2021 Matching Fund Program implementation. Conducted virtually, the FGD was attended by UNS students and academic members through the Zoom Cloud Meeting, Sunday (31/10/2021).

The Head of the Fine Arts Study Program as well as the Organizing Committee of the 2021 FSRD UNS Matching Fund Program, Dr. Setyo Budi, M.Sn., said that the objective of this matching fund program is to establish a connection between universities and the Industrial World Business World (DUDI). “Millennial generation can understand the directions and maps on how to deal with problems. It is not just about graduating, but how to have a beneficial role in this nation,” said Dr. Setyo Budi.

On this occasion, the study program invites a Senior Professor from the Yogyakarta Art Institute (ISI), Prof. M. Dwi Marianto, MFA., Ph.D., as the FGD speaker, and Dyah Yuni Kurniawati, S.Sn. M.Sn., from the UNS Public Relations and Media as well as UNS FSRD lecturer, as the Moderator. In his warm opening, Prof. Marianto started the discussion with a topic entitled “Transforming Virtual Reality into Creative Ideas and Concepts.” Starting from this first point, Prof. Marianto emphasized the importance of student awareness as a subject in the scope of the arts. People who place themselves as subjects are considered well aware that they are actually thinking and planning.

However, people will not always act as the subject. The roles as subject and object certainly, can take place interchangeably. Prof. Marianto directs the discussion on design thinking, which involves empathy. The process of empathy provides an opportunity for someone who was originally positioned as a subject to try to blend with the observed object. “When we are looking for ideas, we transform the object as a subject to allow us in gaining knowledge and obtaining useful phenomena. These subjects and objects interact with each other,” explained Prof. Marianto

Another substantial point is the significance of an object’s in-depth observation. This effort is made to reveal the reality in it. At this point, Prof. Marianto advised the students to create an observed work of art in various creative ways. Prof. Marianto took this opportunity to share tips on starting a creative process. “If you are looking for ideas for a masterpiece, look for a topic according to your dream orientation. Make something that is based on your passion or what excites you when you work on it,” he explained.

The current creative process has also involved various roles of technology. The creation of manual and digital works of art can present simultaneously. The two methods can complement each other in the artwork creation process. Humas UNS

UNS — The Association of Art Educators Indonesia (APSI) inaugurated APSI Managers for Solo Chapter 2021 – 2024 on Wednesday (20/10/2021) through the Zoom Cloud Meeting application. AM. Susilo Pradoko, S.Si, the Chairman of Central APSI, inaugurated several names, including Drs. H. Juliyatmono, MM and Gibran Rakabuming Raka as Board of Supervisor, Prof. Dr. Slamet Subiantoro, M.Si as Chairman, Dr. Deni Triardiyanto, M.A as Secretary, Dr. Sarwono, M.Sn, and Sri Kustati S.Pd as treasurer, and other names as APSI managers chapter Solo.

APSI Chapter Solo is a means for educational operators in Solo regions including Solo, Sukoharjo, Karanganyar, Sragen, Boyolali, Wonogiri, and Klaten, with several educational operators, such as Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, especially Faculty of Arts and Design (FSRD) and Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) that offered Fine Arts and Fine Arts Education Programs. Other universities incorporated in APSI Chapter Solo are Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Surakarta, Akademi Seni Desain Indonesia, Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP), Senior High School (SMA), and Senior High School for Vocational Education (SMK) with performance arts and fine arts program.

Through APSI Chapter Solo, the educational operators are committed to revitalizing art and culture through the development of creation and study methods to achieve Solo as a cultural art park. This objective is in line with the historical power of Solo. “Historically, sociologically, and anthropologically, we couldn’t deny that Solo has art and cultural power that could become our pride at regional, national, and international sectors,” Prof. Slamet Subiantoro stated.

The Central APSI provides strong support for Solo Chapter. Susilo Pradoko explained that Central APSI fully supports the activities implemented by APSI Chapter Solo. Similar support was also shared by the APSI Board of Supervisor, Prof. Dr. Tri Hartiti Retnowati, who invited all APSI managers in Solo Chapter to participate in the study on arts education, including fine arts, dance arts, music, and theater.

“APSI Solo becomes a bridge for arts education planned by the central committee to be implemented well at the regional level,” Prof. Tri Hartiti stated.

Prof. Tri Hartiti also hoped that APSI Chapter Solo could contribute to the central and local governments, as supported by Prof. Slamet Subiantoro as the Chairman of APSI Chapter Solo 2021 – 2024. Prof. Slamet Subiantoro mentioned that APSI in Solo is not just a means for silaturahim of all educators, lovers, and art education fighters but also as a representative place for expressing educative arts in all branches of art.

“To improve the nation’s achievements through art activities both through the process as products. Our major objective as a means to unify the nation, (as) our social capital to unify our nation,” Prof. Slamet Subiantoro concluded. Humas UNS
