First launched in 2012, Titik Awal has become an annual tradition of the Fine Arts Study Program. This year’s event presents debut works from the 2023 student intake. The exhibition carries the theme Titik Awal (Starting Point). It serves as a platform for students to display artworks created through academic assignments and personal exploration.

Exhibition Highlights Debut Works

Dr. Sigit Purnomo Adi, S.Sn., M.Sn., Head of the Fine Arts Study Program and Co-Curator, emphasized Titik Awal’s deeper meaning. He stated that the exhibition helps shape students’ artistic identity and supports their creative development. In addition, the exhibition marks a significant milestone for students entering the professional art world.

“Early-semester students of UNS FSRD’s Fine Arts Program organized this exhibition. True to its name, Titik Awal marks their first step in the creative process,” Dr. Sigit said on Sunday (27/4/2025).

The exhibition features over 100 artworks, including sketches, Indonesian ornamentation, and two-dimensional visual designs (nirmana dwimatra). It also showcases paintings, prints, ceramics, sculptures, and installation pieces. These installations allow visitors to interact with works that align with the theme of beginnings and personal exploration.

Moreover, the year-long preparation included concept development, artwork selection, and catalog compilation. Dr. Sigit expressed hope that similar events will continue in the future to nurture students’ creative development.

“This exhibition provides a learning space for freshmen to understand how to organize, curate, and present art to the public,” he concluded.

Promoting Artistic Growth and Resilience

Among the standout pieces was a painting titled She by Sekar Nurbayyinah. The canvas portrays a side-view of a human skeleton facing a large mirror with a broken golden frame. The mirror reflects abstract white and orange-yellow fragments, symbolizing shattered memories. A dark background adds drama to the interaction between the skeleton and its reflection.

In the exhibition catalog, Sekar explained that the skeleton represents the core self, while the mirror embodies painful memories. “Still, people must embrace them as part of life’s journey,” she wrote. Her work received notable attention from both visitors and curators.

The Titik Awal 12 exhibition received positive responses from attendees, including UNS lecturers and art enthusiasts. Furthermore, the event not only fulfills academic objectives but also inspires students to keep creating and enhancing their artistic abilities.

The consistent annual presentation of Titik Awal reflects UNS’s strong commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education. By participating in real-world exhibitions, students experience the art world beyond theory, gaining practical insights and confidence as emerging artists.

Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Alumni, Prof. Ir. Doddy Ariawan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., reported that this period’s KKN includes four schemes. 260 students are participating in the Java Partnership Scheme, 231 in the Non-Java Partnership Scheme, 458 in the Faculty Partner Scheme, and 670 in the Thematic-Regular Scheme.

The KKN program will take place in various regions across Indonesia, covering seven provinces. In Java, Central Java and East Java serve as KKN locations, while areas outside Java include Bali, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Maluku, and Southeast Sulawesi (Sultra). This broad distribution reflects UNS’s commitment to serving diverse communities.

KKN activities will be conducted in 22 districts and cities. In Central Java, students will be stationed in 12 locations: Blora, Boyolali, Cilacap, Grobogan, Karanganyar, Klaten, Magelang, Sragen, Sukoharjo, Surakarta, Temanggung, and Wonogiri. In East Java, the program will take place in Madiun and Pacitan. In NTB, students will serve in Bima, North Lombok, and East Lombok. In Bali, the locations are Denpasar and Tabanan. Meanwhile, Lembata in NTT, Central Maluku in Maluku, and Wakatobi in Sultra are also designated KKN areas.

UNS has assigned 83 Field Supervisors (DPL) to guide students during the program. The supervisors are faculty members from 14 faculties and one school, including the Vocational School, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), the Faculty of Arts and Design (FSRD), the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), the Faculty of Agriculture (FP), the Faculty of Sports (FKOR), the Faculty of Medicine (FK), the Faculty of Law (FH), the Faculty of Engineering (FT), the Faculty of Animal Husbandry (Fapet), the Faculty of Psychology (Fapsi), the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), the Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB), and the Faculty of Information Technology and Data Science (Fatisda).

UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., conveyed a message to the students, highlighting that KKN is a vital implementation of the Tridarma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education), specifically in community service. This program is expected to provide invaluable experiences in character development, leadership, and social skills.

“Through KKN, students are not only expected to apply the knowledge they have gained in class but also to learn from the social and cultural dynamics of the communities they serve,” Prof. Hartono said.

He emphasized the importance of carrying out responsibilities with creativity, innovation, and a sense of accountability. Students were encouraged to build good relationships with local communities, respect their traditions and cultures, and become agents of positive change in their respective areas.

“They will be deployed across seven provinces, from central to eastern Indonesia, carrying programs designed to address the specific needs of the communities,” he added.

KKN is one of the ways that UNS contributes to community service. The program activities can encompass various aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), depending on the types of initiatives carried out. KKN UNS program aims to address social, economic, and environmental challenges in the participating regions, making a tangible contribution to sustainable development.

The MBKM program, an initiative of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) of the Republic of Indonesia, provides students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through internships, research, or other field projects. This program allows students to earn academic credits from activities conducted outside the campus environment. At FSRD UNS, MBKM aims to equip students with practical experience, art management skills, and networking opportunities in the field of fine arts.

The “ART Reflection” exhibition was officially opened by the Head of the Fine Arts Study Program, represented by Dr. Dona Prawita. In her opening remarks, she praised the students’ dedication to implementing the MBKM program at Solo Is Solo. “Congratulations on the exhibition. I hope this event contributes to the future development of fine arts. This is an excellent and relevant form of fieldwork aligned with the competencies taught in the program,” Dr. Dona stated.

Irma, the exhibition’s organizing committee chair, reported that students produced the showcased works during their internship. Additionally, the exhibition featured outputs from workshops involving public participation. “We are very grateful for the opportunity to intern at Solo Is Solo. Here, we didn’t just learn theories but also gained hands-on practice and explored new experiences beyond what we typically receive on campus,” Irma expressed.

The MBKM program advisor, Dyah Yuni Kurniawati, S.Sn., M.Sn., highlighted the importance of collaboration between academia and the professional world. “Through MBKM, students gain invaluable experience, especially in managing gallery promotions. We are grateful that the program was well received by Solo Is Solo. Students were given the freedom to explore and bring the gallery to life as a creative space for the community through workshops and exhibitions,” she remarked.

Dyah further added that the MBKM team, named Soulscape, successfully collaborated with five tenants who exhibited at Solo Is Solo under a paid system. According to her, this demonstrated the mutual benefits of the program. “We hope this internship program will continue in the future, considering its relevance to competency development in the Fine Arts Study Program,” she added.

The MBKM Fine Arts Program team’s exhibition served as a platform to present students’ works and provided a reflective space for integrating theory and practice in fine arts. As part of the MBKM initiative, the activity is expected to be a stepping stone for students to broaden their perspectives while increasing UNS’s contribution to promoting arts in public spaces.

With the success of this exhibition, Solo Is Solo has further strengthened its position as a creative hub supporting young talents in the arts sector. Meanwhile, the MBKM program is expected to continue bridging the gap between academia and the professional world.

Through this collaboration, Prasojobyrani and Chiquitana showcased the untapped potential of lurik weaving as part of the urban fashion industry.

This international exhibition featured participation from students across various countries, including Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, India, and Poland. The event showcased a total of 80 artworks, with 40 pieces contributed by international participants and 40 from FSRD students. In addition to the exhibition, a series of events were held to support the advancement of art and culture, including performing arts, an art market, a fashion show, and a talk show.

The opening ceremony took place at the HB. Sutopo Building Courtyard of FSRD UNS, attended by the faculty’s leadership, lecturers, staff, and the entire FSRD UNS community. Dr. Jazuli Abdin Munib, S.Sn., M.Hum., the Head of the Organizing Committee, expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in making this international exhibition a success.

“I am deeply grateful to the entire committee from the Fine Arts Student Family (KMSR), the student associations, lecturers, administrative staff, and all members of FSRD who contributed to the organization of this exhibition. We hope to expand our collaborations in the future, not just with six universities but with up to ten international partners. This year, we have elevated the IVCE from a national level to an impressive international platform, facilitating collaborations with more foreign universities,” Dr. Munib stated.

Dr. Deny Tri Ardianto, S.Sn., Dipl. Art., the Dean of FSRD UNS, also shared his pride in the success of this international exhibition. “I would like to express my highest appreciation for the successful organization of this event. As mentioned by the Vice Dean, this is the first time the IVCE has accommodated students at an international level, beyond just local or national scopes. This achievement would not have been possible without the hard work and strong relationships established with foreign universities,” Dr. Deny said.

The exhibition was officially inaugurated by Dr. Deny with a symbolic gong strike. “Let’s spread the word about this moment and our event because it showcases who we are as FSRD UNS. It reflects the talent of our students and the excellence of our program. This event is truly exceptional and deserves to be recognized worldwide,” he added.

Prof. Dr. Sarwono, M.Sn., Interim Head of the Art Craft Program, opened the event by highlighting the significance of this session. “Mr. Asyfa Fuadi’s presence offers students a real-life example of how creative concepts can be applied to traditional woven fabrics, successfully reaching a broader market, especially among the younger generation,” Prof. Sarwono said.

Asyfa Fuadi shared his extensive experience and strong vision, detailing how Craft Denim works to revive Pekalongan weaving with innovative approaches while respecting traditional techniques and values.

He discussed various challenges faced by the ATBM (Non-Machine Weaving Tools) industry in the modern era, such as the reluctance of traditional weavers to update their ATBM settings, despite increasing competition from machine-woven textiles. To address this, Craft Denim focuses on workforce regeneration by involving young people in learning ATBM weaving techniques. The company provides training to create marketable products such as denim shirts and jackets, which have high commercial value.

Furthermore, Asyfa emphasized Craft Denim’s commitment to environmental sustainability, avoiding the use of chemical dyes. He conveyed a vital message to students and industry players about the importance of preserving the environment by not polluting it. “With support from academics, research, and the right technology, we can sustainably produce and store natural dyes,” Asyfa explained.

The lecture attracted enthusiastic participation from Art Craft students and lecturers eager to delve deeper into the opportunities and challenges of developing local woven products for the global market. It is hoped that the inspiration from Craft Denim will motivate young textile artisans and students to continue creating outstanding products with sustainable and competitive concepts.

According to Silmi Cahya Pradini Priliana, S.T, M.Si., the exhibition showcases various student works, including Studio Apartment Interior Design, Residential Interior Design, Commercial Interior Design, Public Facility Interior Design, Final Projects, Interior Product Design, and Furniture Chair Design.

“The Solo Heat issue is explored in each piece on display. The entire event is structured using the four human senses method, which aims to engage multiple human senses to provide visitors with a more immersive and meaningful experience,” Silmi explained to uns.ac.id.

In addition, Arya Ikhsan Risqy, Chair of Inrare 2024, noted that the exhibition addresses the issue of Solo’s heat by presenting design examples and recommended solutions for achieving thermal comfort within spaces. The event, held over 10 days from late September to early October, aims to showcase how interior design can solve the pressing issue of Solo’s heat.

“For instance, in residential spaces, thermal comfort can be achieved by implementing cross-ventilation systems and creating inner courtyards. Both solutions are exemplified in the displayed works as practical applications of these recommendations,” Arya explained.

Integration with M Bloc Design Week

Inrare 2024 also serves as a key collaborator with M Bloc Design Week, where it acts as both designer and organizer of the M Bloc Design Week segment held at Lokananta, Surakarta. This event brings together stakeholders to discuss and offer solutions to the highlighted issue, to increase awareness among academics, practitioners, and the general public.

M Bloc Design Week, with its theme “Daur Rupa-Sustainable Design,” promotes sustainability in design by emphasizing circular economy principles, waste reduction, and efficient resource use. This theme aligns with Inrare 2024’s focus on sustainability.

The UNS exhibition acts as a case study on how interior design can responsibly address environmental issues while leveraging the potential of existing buildings. The display underscores efforts to create spaces that are more comfortable, functional, and sustainable. The collaboration provides a creative bridge between contemporary challenges and innovative solutions, with UNS Interior Design’s focus on innovation and sustainability serving as a core part of M Bloc Design Week’s mission.

The Artist Talk, held in the H.B. Sutopo Auditorium of FSRD UNS, was divided into two sessions. The first session was presented by Fassih Keiso, Ph.D., who shared his insights on “Art & Humanity.”

During his presentation, Keiso showcased some of his internationally exhibited works. One notable example was an art performance reflecting a past war, where the government provided blankets for the victims. These blankets were transformed into clothing, symbolizing how aid (the blankets) could restore what was broken (the clothing). “This illustrates how the blankets helped restore what had been damaged,” Fassih Keiso explained.

The second session was delivered by Cassey Chen from Singapore, focusing on “Art to Inspire”. Chen emphasized that art serves as a source of inspiration. International exhibitions have also featured several of her works.

“I conducted a year-long research on chewing gum, which later gained media attention and was displayed in a gallery. This project is one of the reasons I gained recognition on the international platform,” Cassey Chen shared.

At the end of her talk, Cassey left the audience with two key messages. “There are two important things for all of you: first, hard work, and second, always aim to be better than the person next to you, so you can inspire and motivate each other,” she added.

With an interactive approach, the public was encouraged to participate actively in idea exchanges, presentations of creative explorations, and discussions on creative products.

Community involvement was a key aspect, aimed at making a positive impact. Artists, designers, activists, and cultural figures were invited to share educational ideas on environmental sustainability amidst pressing ecological issues. Additionally, the creative products showcased sought to raise environmental awareness among a broader audience.

Event Chair, Ratna Endah Santoso, shared that this year’s exhibition highlighted an exchange between artists and academics from different cultures. “We’re presenting a unique collaboration between external artists and academics for this year’s “Creativity Collaboration,” marking it as a first for us, although annual design competitions and introductory events like the “Prolog” have long been staples of FSRD,” Ratna explained.

The event offered a variety of activities, including an international “Eco Creativity” exhibition, “Prolog 6”—an exhibition of early-year works by Craft Arts students, a design competition with the theme “Milieu Raksa”, along with art talks, performances, and creativity workshops. An exhibition of handcrafted products from small and medium industries (IKM) was also featured in the event’s broader exploration of everyday life.

This partnership has started with industry internships for students from the Visual Communication Design (DKV) program, with plans to extend opportunities for students to pursue professional development internships and careers at Alila Solo Hotel.

The collaboration also covers a variety of needs and programs organized by both Alila Solo Hotel and FSRD UNS. Recently, they celebrated National Batik Day 2024 with the collaborative event “Warna-Warni Wastra” (Colorful Textiles) on Thursday (3/10/2024).

The batik event showcased the wax-resist dyeing technique, where children engaged in creating and coloring batik patterns just like professional artisans in Solo. Faculty members from FSRD UNS’s Textile Craft Program, including M. Rudianto, S.Sn., M.Sn., and Nisaul Hasanah A. Rosyad, S.Ds., MBA., led the event with student team support. The event opened with remarks by Ninik Dyahningrum Joesoef, followed by a welcome and opening address by Amrit Gurung, General Manager of Alila Solo Hotel.

“‘Warna-Warni Wastra’ is a collaborative batik event with dozens of children who enthusiastically explored the colorful and creative world of batik-making. They learned the traditional art of batik with excitement and joy,” M. Rusdianto shared.

The collaboration between FSRD UNS and Alila Solo Hotel through the internship program and “Warna-Warni Wastra” exemplifies UNS’s Key Performance Indicators (IKU). These programs offer students off-campus experiences, fulfilling IKU 2, while faculty members involved gain opportunities for external engagement, achieving IKU 3.
