UNS — Boeing is one of the most prestigious aircraft companies in the world. The said company has launched a wide range of products and is widely used by large airlines. Boeing’s decades of experience in producing high-quality aircraft are interesting for the students of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta. This interest is captured well by the Center for Fintech and Banking (UNS Fintech Center). Following this growing interest, the Centre for Excellence in Science and Technology (PUI), which studies financial technology (fintech), invites an expert from Boeing to deliver a public lecture.

The Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs UNS, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Sajidan greatly appreciates this initiative. Prof. Sajidan is grateful to Boeing for opening up and collaborating with UNS. Such initiatives are expected to increase UNS students’ insight into the aviation sector. “Personally, I hope this public lecture can help our students understand the aviation industry and open up career opportunities at Boeing, considering that at this time, Boeing has opened an office in Jakarta,” he said.

This Public Lecture presents John Dyson, a Senior Product and Service Marketing Specialist at Boeing. For more than an hour, Dyson explained various materials related to “Boeing’s Airplane Product Family” to participants attending the event. Dyson explains that his party often released a series with a wide variety of options. This variety within a series is referred to as the product family. These products family appear in the Boeing 777, 787, and 737 series. The 777 series, for instance, has two types, while the 787 series is available in three types, and the 737 series is available in four types. “Consumers have their own preferences and needs. For this reason, we created a series with a variety of options to accommodate various needs and functions,” he explained.

Further, Dyson explains some differences among the fleet type within one series. The 737-7 series is specially designed to minimize costs but has high performance. Meanwhile, the 737-9 was designed to have a greater capacity than the average capacity of its fellow 737-8 type.

Took Various Changes

Dyson said that Boeing would continue to engage in various innovations to improve passenger comfort. In addition, Boeing is also currently working on Boeing Sustainable Aerospace. By 2050, Boeing is aiming to maintain sustainable airspace. One of the options considered by Boeing is to start using renewable energy. Renewable energy includes sustainable fuels, including electricity and hydrogen usage.

Boeing is also committed to using advanced technology and streamlining its aircraft operations. The use of ordinary roads for airports to eliminate the need to open new land for a new airport can be one of the measures in streamlining the company’s operations. These measures are expected to improve aviation and environmental sustainability in the long term. Humas UNS

UNS — The Constitutional Court (MK) of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) held a general lecture for Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta students on Friday (3/12/2021). The lecture was held hybrid from Ruang Sidang FISIP UNS and through Zoom Cloud Meeting.

Discussing the topic of “MK’s Role and Challenges in Achieving Democratic Political and Legal System,” the Vice-Chairman of MK, Prof. Aswanto, and MK Judge, Prof. Sardi Isra, who attended the lecture as speakers, encouraged FISIP UNS students to understand the design of Indonesian constitution. Although constitutional law falls under a common discussion topic for the Faculty of Law (FH), it is also essential for students in FISIP and other faculties to master the basic knowledge because the judicial process in MK often involves multidisciplinary consideration. The comprehension regarding the topic for FISIP students is also encouraged so that students understand the separation of power, function, and duty of each state institution as regulated in the 1945 Constitution (UUD 1945)

“Students in each program need to fully understand how the constitution works in a country. Constitutions provide a minimalistic exhibit of a country. Read the constitution, what is the form of the state, the form of the government, the relationship between state institutions, and the relationship between the state and its citizens,” Prof. Sardi Isra stated.

Prof. Sardi Isra also stated that constitutional discussion is not limited to the legal system but also the political system. He explained that the state constitution would directly cause friction with the political interest requiring the check and balance principle in balancing the law and power.

“Therefore, it needs to be anticipated by designing different institutions that could prevent certain institutions from taking actions against the constitution,” he added.

Considering this urgency, MK is included as a new state institution two years after the reformation through UUD 1945 amendment performed by MPR. This establishment is the adoption of the Constitutional Court concept that put MK as one of judiciary power in 2001. The inclusion of MK into the Indonesian state structure is regulated in Article 24 paragraph (2), paragraph 24C, and paragraph 7B of UUD 1945 after the third amendment stipulated on 9 November 2001.

“One of the considerations to establish Constitutional Court is frequent development or developed laws are substantially not in line with the norms or content of UUD,” Prof. Aswanto stated.

To the FISIP UNS students attending the general lecture, Prof. Aswanto stated that MK role in the reformation era is increasingly important to balance the executive and legislative powers. In his opinion, these two powers should not dominate to attack one another because it will affect the political condition negatively. For example, the President and vice president’s impeachment before the reformation is regulated in the UUD 1945. However, he thinks that impeachment should be based on constitutional law instead of a purely political agenda.

“If there is a disagreement between the DPR and the President, many presidents could be impeached in the mid of their office. That’s why we need an institution that could assess if what is decided by DPR, is the President really commit a violation,” he added.

MK is also vital to ensure that there are no laws (UU) developed with content that contradict UUD 1945. Recently, MK ruled that UU Number 11 of 2020 regarding Cipta Kerja as conditionally unconstitutional. In their ruling, MK mentioned UU Cipta Kerja’s development process did not follow the definite and standard method and means and did not follow the systematic formation process for a law. There were also corrections of writing on the content of the law after the agreed meeting between DPR and the President.

“If the solution is handed to the creator of the UU, usually they will keep it although there are mistakes. That’s why we need an institution that could assess if the prepared UU is in line with the UUD 20145,” Prof. Aswanto concluded. Humas UNS

UNS — The Faculty of Sports (FKOR) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a general lecture in sports through offline and online platforms, broadcasted from UNS Rectorate Building on Monday (22/11/2021). The general lecture that invited the Dean of FKOR UNS and the Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) was held in collaboration with Bank Central Asia (BCA).

The general lecture was also attended by the Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho, who also delivered an opening remark in the general lecture. Prof. Jamal stated that in the national anthem, there is a phrase (bangunlah jiwanya bangunlah badannya) that indicates that a strong and reliable nation should have the strength in souls, body, and religiosity that are equal.

“This is the strategic role of sports in building the quality, excellent and whole, human resources. Sports have a strategic contribution in creating healthy Indonesia with a strong character, and excelled at the global level in line with the grand vision of national sports,” Prof. Jamal mentioned in this remark.

The Operational Chief of BCA Branch Solo, Agustin, shared their pride in getting involved in the general lecture. Agustin hoped that this kind of event could create a positive sports climate that was stopped because of the pandemic. Unfortunately, the Menpora, Dr. Zainudin Amali, could not attend the event.

In his discussion, Dr. Sapta Kunta shared that in maintaining the immune system, a person needs to prepare a program that correlates with aerobic activities with a pulse as its main indicator.

“Aerobic capacity is correlated with a pulse. If, before training, someone needs to measure their aerobic capacity, it will be complicated. That is why researches on the correlation between aerobic capacity and pulse need to be studied. The pulse is detected from the maximum aerobic capacity,” he explained.

Dr. Sapta Kunta also added that the suggested aerobic training frequency is between three and five days a week, including walking, light cycling, slow dancing, jogging, running, spinning, high impact gymnastic, swimming, basketball, tennis, football, hiking, and other sports.

“For first-timers, continuous activities for 10 minutes. Gradually to 30 minutes of aerobic exercise/day, total, target 60–150 minutes/week. Then continue up to 30-60 minutes/day, a total of 150-200 minutes/week. For intermediate, moderate activity can be 30-90 minutes/day, total 200-300 minutes/week,” he added. Humas UNS

The general lecture was held online and offline through the Zoom Cloud Meeting platform and was attended by more than 100 participants online and offline.

Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Sajidan, M.Si., in his opening remark, mentioned that the second Key Performance Indicator (IKU) of Public University (PTN) lays the fundamentals for the general lecture. This general lecture that provides external experiences for students is expected to equip them with valuable knowledge in understanding and go in deep into the Indonesian economic situation that they could use in their workplace.

“We thank BPK and Ibu Amanah for providing a lecture on the economy, the direction, knowledge, and insight for students. It will be beneficial for students once they graduate and enter the workplace,” Prof. Sajidan stated.

Prof. Sajidan also mentioned that this general lecture is a token from UNS in implementing the fourth IKU on professional’s lecture in the campus by inviting Amanah Abdulkadir, M.A., Ph.D., as Ex Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Indonesia Resident Mission (IRM) Economic Officer.

“(A country) needs to be able to anticipate the market turmoil and not overwhelmed by the market,” Amanah stated.

She also suggested that Indonesia participate in advanced goods production to increase sustainable economic growth. She also reminded the millennials not to use their imagination in creating larger opportunities to introduce a new type of job.

Nearing the end of the general lecture, the event was followed by the delivery of token appreciation represented by Prof. Sajidan for Amanah Abdulkadir. The general lecture was concluded with documentation. Humas UNS

In this era, the development of internet using should not be an excuse to avoid studying Javanese culture and the manuscripts which have existed since hundreds of years ago. Those should co-exist when the manuscripts are uploaded to the internet in order to widen the scope. That was what Professor Bernard Arps, the expert of Javanese culture from Leiden University, said when attending the general lecture entitled, “The Comparison of Classic, Modern and Contemporary Manuscript” on Monday (9/1/2017).

In the general lecture hosted by Cultural Science Faculty (FIB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Professor Ben Arps started it by explaining the definition of the philology study based on the characteristic of the object. Artefactuality, which means that the manuscript is an artifact or something made by people; Interpretability, which shows that the artifact can be interpreted by people; Intertextuality, which shows the correlation among the manuscript and the other texts; Historicity, which means that the artifact has a correlation with the previous historical events; and Contextuality, which emphasizes the context in the manuscript. “Those five things can correspondingly represent the definition of Philology study,” he added. Those points are the references of his study of the three manuscripts he was describing – Serat Lokapala Kawi, Pratean Kawontenaning Serat-Serat Gadhanipun Raden Ngabehi Kartasupana, and the World Wide Web.

In the explanation of case study in the general lecture having a theme Javanese Philology from Tantular to Internet, Ben Arps showed some manuscript pictures stored in Leiden University library, the oldest library in Netherland. Some of them have flaws, for instance, lost pages and water stain on some parts. “Manuscripts of Old Javanese or Jawa Kawi are stored in Bali. However, some of them are stored in Java. In Yogyakarta and Surakarta palace, Old Javanese manuscripts are still being learnt,” he told. Furthermore, related to the correlation with the internet development, Javanese language should be conserved through giving a Javanese language option in the website as applied in some websites in Malaysia.

This lecture was closed with the conclusion delivered by Supardjo, the Vice Dean of Students and Alumni Affair of FIB UNS, “Manuscripts treatment depends on how we see those Javanese manuscripts. It should be studied carefully through descriptive approach to understand the written form and the writer’s purpose,” he stated. [refita.red.uns.ac.id]
