Key Participants in the Agreement

Dr. Salman Alfarisy Totalia, S.Pd., M.Si., Vice Dean for Non-Academic Affairs, led the UNS Graduate School delegation. The group also included senior academics: Prof. Dr. Prabang Setyono, M.Si. and Prof. Dr. Mohammad Masykuri, M.Si. Additionally, there were also Dr. Agung Hidayat, S.Pd., M.Sc. and Bambang Jatmika, S.Sos.

Dr. Salman emphasized that this cooperation is part of the ongoing relationship between UNS and Bontang. It focuses on the university’s tridharma: education, research, and community service. “We aim to strengthen our collaboration in these areas. UNS Graduate School supports human resource development with its Master’s and Doctoral programs in Environmental Science. This initiative specifically aims to benefit DLH Bontang,” he stated.

Support for Sustainable Development Goals

Heru Triatmojo, S.P., M.Si., Head of DLH Bontang, welcomed the partnership and expressed full support for its implementation. “I encourage our staff to pursue further education at reputable institutions like UNS. Additionally, DLH supports activities such as environmental assessments, waste management, and community service programs,” he said.

Prof. Dr. Mohammad Masykuri highlighted that UNS Graduate School now offers flexible research-based programs at both the master’s and doctoral levels. These programs are ideal for regional government officials. “These programs provide DLH staff with an excellent opportunity to advance their studies without neglecting their primary duties,” he noted.

This collaboration also contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It supports Goal 4 on quality education. It also supports Goal 11 on sustainable cities and communities through improved environmental management and urban development. Additionally, it contributes to Goal 16 on peace, justice, and strong institutions through inter-institutional cooperation for better environmental governance.

Both institutions hope this partnership will positively impact sustainable development and the well-being of Bontang City’s residents.

Goals and Expected Outcomes

In his speech, Dr. Salman highlighted the primary goal of this partnership. He stated that the goal is to strengthen the role of higher education institutions in regional development. “As a multidisciplinary academic institution, the UNS Graduate School provides opportunities for collaboration in education, research, and community engagement. We aim to enhance human resource quality in Bontang, particularly through our master’s and doctoral programs,” he explained.

Ir. Amirudin, M.P., Head of Bapperida Bontang, expressed his appreciation for the initiative. He emphasized his hope that the partnership will lead to tangible programs addressing the city’s specific needs. “We are optimistic about this collaboration. We believe it will help solve regional challenges such as waste management, post-mining land reclamation, and strengthening development governance,” he said.

The partnership aligns with several pillars of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:
• Pillar 4: Quality Education — Enhancing academic capacity and regionally-focused research.
• Pillar 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities — Supporting inclusive and environmentally friendly development in Bontang.

This community service initiative was led by Dr. Siti Khoiriyah, S.Si, M.Si., and included members Prof. Dr. Drs. Pranoto, M.Sc., Dr. Widya Mudyantini, M.Si., Dr. Chanel Tri Handoko, M.Sc., and Dr. Widodo Aribowo, M.A. The event began with remarks from the Head of the UNS Environmental Science Doctoral Program, Prof. Dr. Drs. Pranoto, M.Sc. In his speech, he emphasized that waste has value and requires skills and technology for proper management. “We encourage participants, who are waste bank managers from Sukoharjo Regency, to continuously improve their waste management capabilities,” Prof. Pranoto said.

Agus Suprapto, S.T., M.T., Head of the Sukoharjo Environment Agency, noted in his opening remarks, that the people of Sukoharjo have become increasingly aware and concerned about waste management in their area. The Waste Bank Community is always striving to enhance its role in waste management. “This event was attended by 40 waste bank managers from across Sukoharjo Regency,” Agus Suprapto explained.

The event began with presentations and discussions on household waste management from the National Innovation and Research Agency, delivered by Dr. Sri Wahyono and Ir. Firman L. Sehwan. The discussion was intense and engaging, with several participants asking questions about their experiences in household waste management.

 Dr. Wahyono started his presentation by explaining that several landfill sites have been closed recently. Cities like Bandung and Yogyakarta have been declared waste emergencies, akin to having a closed WC, prompting questions about where to dispose of household waste. Due to this concern, household waste management must be more actively pursued to reduce waste generated by households. Various techniques in waste management were discussed, such as Biopore Infiltration Holes (LRB) with its variants Loseda and Teba, aerobic and semi-aerobic composters, Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC), biogas, Eco-enzyme fermenters, Eco-bricks, handmade crafts, and waste banks. The presentation continued with a practical session on making innovative eco-enzyme fermenters, with the results given to the training participants.

The training participants expressed their enthusiasm for the event and expressed their hope for intensive training to enhance their waste management skills. These participants have already formed a community of Waste Bank managers under the guidance of the Sukoharjo Environment Agency, with the hope of staying motivated and enthusiastic in managing waste in Sukoharjo Regency.
