]]> UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) reaffirmed its commitment to industry-academia collaboration during the AppliedHE Xchange 2025 conference. As a co-host of the event, UNS facilitated discussions on strengthening partnerships between universities and the industrial sector.

A key session featured Prof. Kevin Downing, Secretary to the Council and Professor at City University of Hong Kong. Speaking at the InterContinental Bali on Monday (24/2/2025), he presented on the theme “Partnering with Industry: Opportunities and Pitfalls.”

Why Industry Partnerships Matter

Prof. Downing highlighted the importance of industry partnerships in creating research opportunities that address real-world challenges. These collaborations provide access to cutting-edge data and technology while enhancing the skills of both academics and students.

“Industry partnerships allow academics to conduct data-driven research and develop new technologies. At the same time, students gain valuable hands-on experience through internships. For companies, these collaborations help reduce research costs, improve business performance, and leverage academic expertise for innovation,” he explained.

Challenges in University-Industry Collaboration

Despite the benefits, Prof. Downing also noted the challenges. Differences in funding sources, governance structures, and priorities often create barriers.

“Universities must consider public perception in financial management, while industries prioritize legal and financial compliance. Therefore, strong governance and thorough due diligence are essential to ensure successful collaboration,” he added.

Prof. Downing shared a case study from the City University of Hong Kong to illustrate an effective collaboration.
