The program ran for three months, from October to December 2024, led by Prof. Dr. Ir. Niken Silmi Surjandari, S.T., M.T., along with a team of experts, including Dr. Ir. Endah Safitri, S.T., M.T.; Dr. Ir. Fahkrina Fahma, S.TP., M.T.; Ir. Purwanto, M.T.; Ir. Setiono, S.T., M.Sc.; and Wibowo, S.T., DEA. The program also involved specialists from Bappeda Litbang (Regional Development and Research Agency) of Magetan Regency.

According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) of Magetan Regency in 2023, over 1.600 roof tile industries are concentrated primarily in Maospati and Bendo sub-districts. These industries employ over 4.000 workers and generate an annual production value of IDR 81,9 billion. Despite its rich history and access to high-quality raw materials, Magetan’s roof tile industry faces stiff competition from similar products outside the region.

The quality enhancement program aims to identify factors affecting roof tile production in Magetan Regency. “We are also formulating methods to enhance quality towards SNI standards in terms of durability, aesthetics, and performance, as well as developing strategies for production and marketing to expand market share,” Prof. Niken explained, as quoted from ft.uns.ac.id on Wednesday (15/1/2025).

The program employed several approaches, including literature reviews to gather preliminary insights, field surveys to understand raw materials, production techniques, and equipment, and laboratory testing of clay to evaluate its quality. “The collected data was analyzed to determine techniques for improving tile quality. This was followed by training and mentoring tile craftsmen in Maospati and Bendo, along with preparing reports and strategic recommendations,” she added.

The initiative yielded several significant findings. First, the historical success of earlier generations of tile craftsmen highlights the potential for further development. Second, the high SiO₂ content of over 50% in local clay makes it suitable for producing high-quality roof tiles. However, challenges persist, including production processes that do not meet quality standards, inefficient firing equipment, a lack of awareness regarding SNI quality standards, and the absence of optimal raw material formulations.

Key recommendations from FT UNS include raising craftsmen’s awareness about the importance of quality standards, encouraging group investments in modern firing equipment, and formulating raw materials by mixing clay with sand and slaked lime to address the expansive properties of clay that cause cracking.

Laboratory tests conducted by FT UNS revealed that Magetan’s current roof tile production meets SNI criteria but at the lowest quality level. Improvements in strength and water resistance are needed to achieve higher quality standards.

“This program is expected to mark a new chapter for the roof tile industry in Magetan Regency, making it more competitive and capable of meeting national market demands with high-quality products. We hope this initiative will help Magetan’s roof tiles achieve SNI certification soon, increasing their market value,” Prof. Niken concluded.

The event that was held online through the Zoom Cloud Meeting platform raises the topic of “Preparation for Training and Certification Program in Logistics and Supply Chain Industry”. The Head of Management Program FEB UNS, Dr. Atmaji, M.M., stated that the event was held to improve Management faculty members’ capability in holding training and certification in various fields. This time, they focus on the logistics and supply chain industry.

“We hope that this training could equip the Management faculty members in preparing training and certification program. After participating in this program, I hope all faculty members could act as reliable trainers for the community, especially for our students,” Dr. Atmaji stated.

Further, Dr. Atmaji explained that currently, his Team is revitalizing the Pusat Pengembangan Manajemen (PPM) (Center for Management Development). The training and certification programs will be one of the programs developed under PPM managed by the Management Program.

To learn in-depth concerning the logistic and supply chain sector, the program invited Johannes Samsi, S.E., M.M. CSCM, CSCL, CLM, CSMK., a Director of Trucking Company Indonesia. Johannes has extensive experience in multinational shipping companies, freight forwarding, and trucking/logistics/transportation. Johannes also acts as Senior Manager in PT. Samudra Indonesia for ten years from 2001 to 2011, before moving as the General Manager in PT. Pantos Logistik Indonesia for two years. The Universitas Sumatra Utara (USU) graduate also served as Country Head in PT. TCI Global Indonesia, President Director in PT. Perkasa Teknik Solusi, Director HARVEST Taxi, and currently serving as the Director of PT. TMA Logistics Indonesia.

Johannes opened his material with an introduction to a number of certification institutes in Indonesia. He then explained the requirements that must be fulfilled by freight drivers and explained the differences between the Driving License (SIM) and Driving Competencies that must be owned by drivers. The training was delivered in two batches on 24 August 2021 for the first batch and on 31 August 2021 for the second batch. In the official release from the Group’s field supervisor (DPL), Dr. Eng. Kusumaningdyah Nurul Handayani explained that the training was conducted based on the development that demands the young generation to think creatively, innovatively, and adaptively. Therefore, to follow the development, design skills are viewed as an added value. The training is essential for the local young generation because most digital era activities need design skills.

Risma Rusniati was invited as a speaker in batch one. Risma taught about the layout, coloring, typography, and other components of graphic design. The KKN Group had successfully moved the local youth to participate actively in training and implement the knowledge they gained from it.

“On 31 August, in batch two, we invited Tissa Florika, a freelance photographer, content creator, and graphic designer. Her material focuses on illustration and doodle art that can be applied offline,” Dr. Eng. Kusumaningdyah Nurul Handayani explained.

In the second batch, the Group and local youth applied the knowledge by creating mural doodle art of Covid-19 education on walls to apply two applied knowledge at the same time. The young generation was enthusiastic in participating in the training and the following competition to create Covid-19 poster education.

The Group has ten members: Nugraheni Ramadhona from Economics Education Program, Muhammad Arsya Dika Maulana from Soil Science Program, Ramadhina Nurdianti from Soil Science Program, Firzatulloh Irhab Kautsar from Law Science Program, Prananda Adi Dermawan from Management Program, Angga Zulaiha Nur Hanisa from Management Program (Transfer), Naufal Ady Pradana from Sports Coaching Education Program, Risma Rusniati Agricultural Extension & Communication Program, Maria Imaculata Sindi Prastiwi from Indonesian Language and Literature Education Program, and Aulia Rahmawati from Elementary School Teacher Education Program.
