The International Contemporary Calligraphy Exhibition is an event organized by the Center for Islamic Studies and Development Jakarta (Jakarta Islamic Centre). This exhibition carries the theme “The Power of the Qur’an,” which is expected to promote transformation toward a better direction along with the Qur’an, both on a national and international scale. The exhibition was attended by 102 artists from 26 countries, including Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Iran, Tunisia, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iraq, Algeria, Lebanon, Pakistan, Morocco, China, Saudi Arabia, UAE, UK, America, Syria, Bahrain, Uzbekistan, Libya, Yemen, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Thailand, and Sri Lanka.

Kharisma Nuril Adha had the opportunity to become one of the artists representing Indonesia in this exhibition by presenting a work entitled “The Heart of the Qur ‘an.” “In this exhibition, I presented a work entitled Heart of Al Qur’an, which is a title assigned for Sura Yasin. This calligraphic painting concept was to take the first two verses of Sura Yasin with a painting size of 80×60 cm. The visualization of the painting shows a temple relief style and traditional nuances, with the intention that the quoted Sura has a special position in the living traditions of some Muslims in Indonesia,” explained Kharisma, Tuesday (10/5/2022).

Furthermore, Kharisma was very grateful and exhilarated to join this exhibition. “My feeling is certainly very grateful and very happy to participate in an international exhibition, and I never expected my calligraphy work entitled Heart of the Qur’an can pass the curation or selection of works for the international exhibition. Moreover, being able to join and take part in international exhibitions is my dream,” said Kharisma.

Kharisma explained that she got initial information about the exhibition from one of his lecturers, Nanang Yulianto, S.Pd., M.Ds. “Further detailed information about all the requirements of the exhibition is notified by Mr. Nanang’s friends. He is one of the lecturers who enjoy encouraging and supporting his students to continue their creation and enthusiasm for achievement,” said Kharisma.

At the end of the interview, Kharisma expressed her feelings for being able to join artists from different countries. “I was confused about how to express my feelings because I lacked experience when my work had to be displayed among the works of world-class contemporary calligraphy masters and artists. The moment that my work can be exhibited together with their work is something that is very valuable in my life and is a motivation to continue creating more creative and interesting ideas in the field of calligraphy,” Kharisma concluded.
